this will be my first pikmin game
always saw those games from afar
what's the games like? looks like platform with small puzzles and lemmings-like mechanics

      Anonymous

It's like a hectic RTS lite that makes you feel really bad for losing your "troops" and with a really comfy atmosphere and designs, earlier games had a more creepy comfy alien atmosphere which was also great

      Anonymous

It's sort of an RTS game, you grow and command an army of pikmin in order to navigate the area solving puzzles and defeating weird ass creatures who want to eat your army, your goal being to collect different "treasures" in order to stave off asphyxiation/starvation/the IRS

Is it worth playing 1 and 2? Is 3 just the best one?

The games are very different from one another, people will never decide on which is the best

Honestly i agree, it feels like they're moving more and more power away from the pikmin and into the playable character by adding the dog.

3's the worst one but it's still pretty good

      Anonymous

1 is absolutely worth playing. It's just 3 but smaller tbh.

2 is worth playing because of just how different it is to 1 and 3. A lot of people hate the dungeon crawling, but persoanlly I thought it was a pretty natural evolution for the series.

      Give them a try.

        >A lot of people hate the dungeon crawling
It's just hardcore 1gays specifically. Most of the fanbase loves 2 overall

All are worth playing. I prefer 3 over the first two myself.

just by the replies, this seems to be the consensus.
but I'm still hesitant to get decades old games for premium price. I should grab metriod dread now instead while it's on sale

3 is the worst one. It feels like one big tutorial until you get the blue Pikmin but by then it's practically over.

        Anonymous

Yeah the pacing for 3 was super weird. When Blues come into play you're just doing cleanup, can't you go right to the final boss immediately after?
Also 3 had one of the best final "bosses" ever in a game, that final level was absolutely stellar

        >At least they aren't hiding it. That's the b***h of licensing, it can be soulful for a short time but eventually permanently damage something. Same shit happened with Mike Tyson's punch-out or Evangelion and "Fly me to the moon"
I know, I'm not complaining (though I am sad deep down) but I think people who weren't around last thread should know. I'm surprised the Wii version was able to keep that stuff intact.

Often the deals will be for a certain amount of years, like 5-10 to simplify distribution for thing like re-releases and bundles. It's a shame, but Pikmin 2 had plenty of soul beyond corporate product placement.

Pikmin 3 Deluxe has the shortest story and lightest on main content, but best Challenge Mode and amazing side content.

        Anonymous

seconding 3 challenge mode. I didnt bother doing the challenge modes in 1 and 2 that much but 3 made me platinum everything because of how fun it was. Also if you can find someone to co-op then Pikmin 3 is the best game period

      Anonymous

It's a matter of preference. Many people swear by 1 for it's time pressure and risk management, but just as many love 2 for it's exploritory nature and more polished gameplay. 3 tries to meet in the middle but ends up a bit more on the 1 side, with less time pressure. 4 likewise seems to take more from 2.

      Anonymous

why would you think that the worst one in the series is the best one, were you just too young to play the first two when they came out or something, maybe you werent even born yet who knows

I'm 30. I played 1 when I was a kid and hardly remember it. Just missed out on the series really and seems like a good time to get involved.

      2 > 1 > 3, but I haven't played 3 Deluxe. I don't like how 3 controls compared to the other games, and it doesn't let your swarm.

3 DX made the lack of swarming a lot more tolerable with improved controls.

      Pikmin 2 is the best.

      Anonymous

      1 is the best game
2 is like a challenge mode of 1, with lil dungeons, its good but its basically more 1 with less interesting plot
3 is ezpz snooze fest and it feels even shorter, but it looks nice

      Anonymous

Definitely at least play the first one. It's so short you'll probably beat it in a few sittings. No reason not to play it if you're curious.

1 and 2 are both great. The Pikmin AI can be pretty moronic in 1. 2 spends a lot of time in caves which some people don't like. I prefer 2, but there are plenty of people in both camps.

      Anonymous

1 is inaccessible and cruel, but very raw, simple, and pure.

2 is ugly and a long dungeon-crawling nightmare endless slog, but sprawling, comfy, luxurious, and with very, very high peaks of excitement and danger

3 is watered down and streamlined, but is by far the series' smoothest, prettiest, and most accessible entry, while also having the deepest gameplay if you also partake in the Mission mode

All three are 8/10 or higher, but they're VERY different. You can't go wrong with any of them.

I'm a little worried they didn't show anything of 1+2 HD, but I guess we'll see plenty in a few hours.

            Anonymous

The character customization trailer showed that Olimar was using the Dolphin as he crashed on the planet. Though maybe he got the Dolphin back after 3, we don't know.

      Anonymous

Dondari is an Olimar effigy the pikmin made to subsitute his absence, its purpose is to test any prospective new captain's worthiness to lead them.

      Anonymous

My other possible theory is that the Pikmin grew so attached to him that they somehow evolved to have their own leader in his likeness, so they didn't have to wait for a captain to come around to get shit done. I can see them having more of these guys in the likeness of other captains from the past games, and you have to fight each of them in a VS match to rescue a castaway

        Anonymous

so olimar is fricking dead/a horrible pikmin-hocotation abomination yeah?

Okay, so Olimar has become a Pikmin, can he be reverted back guys? The poor thing finally met his demise. Also, he talks about how Bulbmins remind him of his dog, his dog is that green one seen in the trailer.

That actually makes sense, they evolved to be like the captains, it wouldn't make any sense in evolutionary terms though.

I have atheory that the world is actually being run by AI machines that are mixing with organic lives. That's why the onions on 3 are mechanical and there are some symbiotic lifeforms.

Considering that this Pikmin has Olimar clothes, it could very well be one of these machine AIs doing this work by creating this abominations tha we see in the games.

I also like to think that the caves were created by the Bulbmins, so the go around creating these pipe systems and caves and constraptions, maybe there is an AI that's doing that, based on the that it has and that's why the caves are so similar.

The eshop says they've removed Ai no Uta and Tane no Uta.

I wasn't sure if they referring to the actual lyrical songs (which weren't in the games to begin with), or just the easter egg of the Pikmin singing the theme, which got me a bit confused/hopeful at first. If they really did get rid of the latter, then damn.

I can't tell if I like the gradual increase in human structures each game. It was cool in 1 how it was clear that earth was LONG abandoned and few things survived but now we got full on houses with furniture that looks brand new just set.

        Anonymous

Yeah I wish the house setting was more dilapidated, it looks way too clean for the setting.

0 we'll probably get saved by a squirrel or something lol however...IF there is a human I only want to see their foot squish the final boss before walking elsewhere and the human doesn't notice or maybe a human toddler steps on it. It needs to be subtle but obvious like everything else in the games

      Anonymous

Honestly the "3 types max" Pikmin sounds like a good thing, so long as they make Onions easy to access and don't have bullshit DK64 level design of constant backtracking for specific Pikmin. 5 Pikmin out at once felt a bit much in 2 and 3, I liked the caves that only needed 2-3 types because managing 10-30-20-25-15 squads is stupid.

      Anonymous

I don't mind it since every single pikmin type from past games is in, it could lead to some interesting scenarios where you have to plan out which types you're taking with you.

It might also help balance out Purple Pikmin more since you're getting strength for a type with no resistances.

Play until you reach the mushroom boss, if you don't like it by then, give up.

Depends on the game really. Pikmin 1 has good replayability to try to manage your time best to get all parts in the shortest amount of time with nice atmosphere and Olimar is an engaging character for Nintendo, 3 tries to replicate the gameplay part of this. 2 is more of a collectithon and dungeon crawler, it's fun to collect stuff in those games.
Also 20 minutes is less than 2 full days, sounds like you did Day 1 (the tutorial day) and Day 2 (the real first day of the game). Did you really give it a chance?

Ginger beer made with actual ginger is very intense and almost tastes "spicy", it burns my throat. But they probably couldn't put the word "Beer" in an E-rated game
Most "Ginger" ale at restaurants like Canada dry or Schwepps is just Coca-cola and Sprite mixed together and once I learned this fact I could never taste the soda the same way again. If you don't believe me find a soda fountain and mix those two sodas together.

          [...]

It's an AI reconstructing stuff based on its memory bank.

I really love that Nintendo is adding progression systems to all their games now. Kirby got one as well in Forgotten Land. It's so easy to implement but Nintendo has been stubbornly avoiding doing it for years.

            >We got upgrades for our shit in pikmin 2 though
Yes we did, I loved that about Pikmin 2. But Pikmin 3 did not have progression. It feels like from around 2010 up until around 2021 Nintendo was refusing to add progression systems to almost any of their games, and this didn't used to be the case. Back in the day even 3D Mario games had small progression systems. Mario 64 had the unlockable hats, and Sunshine had the unlockable powerups in the hub area. Every game should have some form of progression, even if it's a small one because it just gives the player motivation to play the game.

what's wrong with a cleanly house?

Pikmin Earth is suffering from dimensional anomalies, that's why you get absurd settings like the multi-floor underground dungeons and relatively pristine locations (and objects like the pristine Pikmin 2 treasures). The wraiths are at the core of it all.

So do we have 5 confirmed overworld areas then?

    >Garden area
    >Desert area
    >Playground/cherry blossom area
    >Worksite/backyard area
    >Living room and kitchen area

In addition they look pretty huge, if the living room/kitchen size is anything to go off of.
Can’t imagine Nintendo would show every area off in prerelease as well - any predictions on how many more/which kinds of areas we’ll see in the game? Personally I’d love a couple more in different locations inside the house. A basement area would be cool, so would a masterbedroom + en suite bathroom kind of region.

I’m skeptical we’ll see a snowy area, although it’s definitely a possibility given the existence of the desert. I thought the whole game was going to be contained in an urban setting, so the desert threw me for a loop.

as the narrator says 'open up new areas to explore', the trailer shows 3 places:
        sandland
        cherry blossom park
        inside the house

this is in addition to the backyard area with stone walls that features in most shots.
i think it makes sense to expect 4 major areas and maybe a 5th smaller, final level as before. i wouldn't expect 5 major areas. the garden area and worksite/backyard area you list are probably the same area.

True, I would be a little disappointed if all we get of the house is that one area though. It would fit Nintendo’s MO but I’m huffing some hopium that the long development time means this will be a significantly more expansive game than previous iterations.

I'm gonna guess the dog level ups you get from beating dungeons, which is why they're so strong, while the suit powerups from Pikmin 2 you get from just collecting resources lying around. Nintendo likes to do this thing where they have one major progression system with one minor one together. Like how BotW has the spirit orbs which are the major one and the koroks which are the minor one.

Yeah but if you face an obstacle that requires Rock Pikmin but you didn't bring them for the day, too bad, you wasted your time there.

You can have many more pikmin in caves, but I doubt you'll be able to bring them all back as the number on the right turns red when you get over 30 Pikmin.
Maybe there are upgrades to have more Pikmin types and more Pikmin on the field? There are so many arts with all Pikmin fighting together now that not being able to see them together would ruin the colorful aspect of the game.

Because they brought back caves, where in Pikmin 2 they would straight up tell you "Bring fire, and electric"
Each dungeon will have 2-3 specific types required.

Yeah, I'm calling bullshit on the three types and 30 cap limit.
Early on, I can understand them limiting you to prevent caves from being easily busted by twenty purple, but we've seen caves with fire, water, electricity, poison, crystals, wind and puzzles requiring winged. With multiple floors, I sincerely doubt they'll limit themselves to only three hazards per cave, when half of the Pikmin 2 caves had all four of them.
Plus promotional art keeps showing more than three types on one oversized Oatchi. We can definitely unlock an ability to have more than three types at a time and more than 30.

so there's enough evidence that the first limit is indeed 30 Pikmin and then you can get up to 75 as [...] anon has shown here in what could be a midgame cave as there are white Pikmin.

I'm just curious to know how they can justify upgrading onions, and why did they lose the ability to have 100 Pikmin on the field from the start?

Like the previous games, the number in the bottom-right is probably the total Pikmin you have outside of the onion.

I just don't like how they removed our ability to choose every types in our team or not. You were never forced to use all types in 2 and 3 but you were given the ability to do so.
In 4 you can no longer choose if you want four, five, six or seven Pikmin types. You will only get three and be happy.

Also the 30 Pikmin limit early on sucks. I hate upgrading system.

        Anonymous

Blues are mandatory in caves to recover treasures under water. Which means that for hazard heavy areas you'll always need blues.
Yellow and Rock will probably be needed as well for walls that will be unbreakable otherwise. There, you have the three types you'll always use.

If we can find a single frame of the video with more than three pikmin types being used then you'll be right. We already have evidence 30 is not the cap and it's clearly upgradeable in increments of 15. I'm still betting 120 is the final count.

        Anonymous

I think that even if the three type limit is permanent they still wouldn't restrict it to 3 hazards per cave. You're gonna have to make do without in some late game caves, i'd bet any money.

Look I'm not complaining about Oatchi's versatility, but I wanted to play Pikmin to control Pikmin, not a fricking dog.
If he can deal with about every hazard himself, that ruins the charm of the game.
They clearly try to limit us by fixing a hard limit of three types and an early cap of 30 yet give us a companion that can fight, carry and resist all hazards.

at least one armor and one attack upgrade for the captain, and let's say the same for Oatchi, meaning four extra gears.
        no idea for the rest

        [...]
it seems to be focused entirely on upgrades for the captain and Oatchi. We know that there were six rescue corps members and Oatchi on that ship that needed to be saved (castaways don't count).
One is Sheperd, for the dog, Collin for the missions, the bald dude for the lab, Yonny for the nights expedition. There are at least two other members that can contribute to your upgrades in a way.

I'm not saying we can't increase the amount of Pikmin, I'm just not sure it's the same dude that offers you this specific upgrade.

The amount of Pikmin might also depend on when you discover a new type. Notice how the highest caps involve Blue and White Pikmin, while the lower numbers only have Red, Yellow and Ice?

Which makes me wonder HOW will we discover new types besides Yellow and Blue (we have seen their onions)?
And how does it work the day you find them, can you work on their numbers from the start or you need to wait the following day?

And why do the captains never bring weapon to hunt creatures?

really? I mean I didn't think 3 was terrible but I definitely liked it the least of 1-3
the gameplay wasn't bad but all the collectables being random fruit that all just became Food was pretty disappointing after 1 and 2
I suppose the shit from 2 just "becomes money" but most of them were real creative designs and (for a while at least) had a good usage rather than just more time.
The parts from 1 are self-explanatory, they all had their own scifi babble description.

Every time the captains travel through space with their little FTL ships, they find Earth in different configurations across hundreds of millions of years due to time dilation. It's been so absurdly long that the continents have shifted configurations hundreds of times every time they visit, but they don't know or care to notice.

it's the result of Nintendo's new art direction being very sanitized and blocky, exclusively made for moronic children, everything has a too-clean, too-simple look that doesn't fit. It's uniform across all their games, same in TOTK. it's like some asiatic looked at the art of Pikmin 1 and 2 and took the most superficial elements of it without really getting it

        Anonymous

I was talking about this in a Mario RPG thread, so sorry if this comes across as repeating myself, but what you're talking about isn't an art style change it's a change to the nature of video game graphics in general. With older games, they used baked in lighting so they were able to add a lot more detail artificially. Now most companies don't really bake in lighting anymore or do little of it and rely more on actual lighting systems. This does have a negative effect of reducing "lighting detail." But there are numerous problems with baking in lighting, in particular how difficult it would be to draw up all those super detailed textures at 1080p that make it really unfeasible for modern games. We're never going back to baked in lighting, though with each new console the lighting systems will get better, and get closer to what baked in lighting looked like.

          Anonymous

Then go back and exchange for a type of pikmin that will help you advance past the hazard
IMO pikmin is at its best anyway when you are making regular returns to the ship. Small incursions each time, venturing out to get a treasure here and there.
When you have 100 pikmin and all the types and then you just steamroll every obstacle, enemy and treasure in front of you is when pikmin is at its least fun.

            Anonymous

I really doubt you can change your types of pikmin during the day. It seems that you have to choose which types you'll bring for the day. You can bring the onion closer but it won't magically change color.

      Anonymous

      >so this is everything we worried about regarding him babying the game?
You don't start with the abilities though. For example at the start he only counts for 1 toward carrying something, basically worthless. Probably does not damage and cant carry shit either. You will unlock those upgrades probably by beating dungeons. And this also allows them to balance things around those powers, for example making later bosses have more health to account for his damage. I'm not worried about it.

        Anonymous

        >fricking skill trees with a pikmin game
I'm trying to be fair here, we basically had progression in P2 with the unlocks from caves, this probably won't be too far off, and honestly unlocking more pikmin in the game is also progression. This is just presented in a way I don't like.

          Anonymous

I can understand your worry because fundamentally this looks like something other companies would do. It looks like a system you might see in an Ubisoft or EA game. But Nintendo has repeatedly shown in recent years that they can adopt trends used by the rest of the industry but simply do them better.

I would guess the purpose of Oatchi is to limit the player in where they can go. The map is more open ended and less linear so they're not likely to pull the shit where you are given a bunch of gates you have to break down to get to the dungeons/treasures. Instead Oatchi will serve that role, by upgrading him you will be able to reach different areas and be able to fight or deal with bigger threats.

I am baffled that there are people who are happy that they limit you in what you can do in this sequel, notably preventing you from having multiple pikmin types. Guess it's the modern gamer mentality.

Well if the alternative is not having every pikmin type or having them relegated to side modes only like in 3 I prefer it this way.

Wheres mission mode, surely they bring it back right?

Glow Pikmin are too cool to be relegated to such a minor role.
I'm hoping there's missions that take place at night or something to allow them to be used more

W-what happens in the red zone?

The eyes glow red. It's probably like Dead Rising zombies getting stronger at night.

It's a good thing you can only use 30 pikmin at once. The dog would die if it had to carry any more than that!

That dog's gonna carry my 100 purples and myself

You can use more than 30 later in the game.

So, there won't be multiple playable captains and the go here feature won't come back?

      Correct.

Man, that fricking blows, the go here function was the best addition to the franchise. It makes no sense to get rid of it now that the game seems more open ended.

It is possible they could have just adapted that function some otherway, like maybe you can tell a group of pikmin to go somewhere on their own.

Oatchi can act as a second captain and he can throw Pikmin on his back.

What if the Oatchis take over command?

            >Oatchi can frick your wife while you’re away on business

            OH SHIT
I thought the dog was completely moronic. Well then, if you can send him elsewere with a pikmin squad, that's good enough for me.

    >Start a day
    >Bring blue, winged and yellow pikmin because of some treasures you know you can get
    >Get a few treasures using them
    >Run into crystal wall blocking one off
    >Have to go back and swap out your yellows for rocks
    >Break crystal wall
    >There’s a cave behind it that needs yellows and reds
    >Go back and swap them out again
    >Get to sublevel 5 of the cave
    >Turns out there’s a treasure that needs winged pikmin that you can’t get because you swapped them out for reds

This might happen to an extent, it seems like being able to move your onion to different landing zones will reduce this. I'm kind of worried about the game feeling like DK64 but I trust them to have considered that kind of thing. Being able to move your ship is also pretty cool because it forces you to consider if Pikmin carrying something wouldn't be able to get back to base and possibly be killed at sunset if you move it, it's a pretty cool mechanic.

I wish the limit was 5 types at least. 3 seems too restrictive and I feel like it’ll just reduce the amount of strategic thinking I can do.

I've been waiting for Pikmin 1 and 2 to be ported.
    This is great news.

I just want to close out this thread by saying that if you didn't play Pikmin on the GameCube then you have never really played any Pikmin. Waggle controls are soulless.
