Piracy wasn't what caused snk to collapse. It was no clear/failed visions of the future (hyper ng, sticking with arcade buisness into 2000s, failure to adapt to 3D/home consoles) + a failed amusement park.

Wrong. They were small plucky and a one trick pony. They made one winner Neo Geo. NGP wasn't a hit it was barely enough to keep going. Hyper Neo Geo 64 was a failure. They couldn't keep up with the changes because Neo Geo was their easy street.

The irony is that a Neogeo MVS 2 would have completely seized control of the entire US market if it had been released in 2003-ish. Most of the other big providers had pulled out of the arcade scene and there was still a lot of demand for "time killer" arcade games at random businesses, a niche that Raw Thrills took over a year or two later.

I think if things had played out that way, it's very likely they'd have moved to online digital download arcade machines around the same time they were catching on in Japan, either teaming up with Taito to localize the NesicaxLive or just having the resources and library to make their own.

But that's not the timeline we got.

He's not meme'inf Raw Thrills is the #1 arcade manufacturer in the USA. It was only possible because every other Japanese arcade manufacturer abandoned the Western Market thinking arcades were dead. This gave Raw Thrills almost 10 years of free reign to sell machines and grow with no competition.

Then Japan realized they were wrong about arcades being dead and tried to re-open their Western branches. Except it was too late. Raw Thrills was too entrenched.

Piracy has always been a cope excuse to make yourself feel better in why your shit didn't sell. The reality, like always, is that only a minority of a minority pirate and the rest of the consumers just didn't care

Wasn't one of the chief reasons that the entirety of Mexico adopted NeoGeo over CPS1/2 that bootlegs were more prevalent and accessible?

Yes, but markets like Mexico and Philippines aren't what determine the success of a major console.

Nah, in SNK's case, it was the amusement park and mindless spending.
They were capable of surviving up to the mid-late 2000s due to the Neo-Geo's overall success, but their shit financial decisions killed everything.
However, bootlegs and emulation DID actually kill the Neo-Geo, since there wasn't any copy protection until KOF '99, and emulators weren't good enough until NeoRAGE

Be realistic, was the Neo-Geo ever popular enough to have a sustained bootleg scene?

I just think of the back alley stores all over Brazil and Hong Kong, etc filled to the walls with PS1, VCD/DVD and PC bootlegs and I just can't visualize any space for Neo-Geo ones...

Neo-Geo bootlegs were 100% meant for arcade operators, so they weren't seen by most people back then (the AES had some flashcarts if you were going that way). You could find an original game right next to a bootleg and most people didn't realize nor care unless it was a hack, like KOF2002 MP2.
Frick, you can literally buy brand new bootlegs nowadays from Aliexpress, people are still buying them

        Absolutely yes.
Asking this question is telling about your retro vidya knowledge. It's like asking if the NES was popular enough to have sustained bootleg scene.

        >Be realistic, was the Neo-Geo ever popular enough to have a sustained bootleg scene?
Anon...over 1 million Neo Geos were sold worldwide. It's one of the most popular arcade machines of all time. It printed money for SNK.

It was so popular that SNK extended warranty service to Neo Geo owners for 15 years. It was still Popular into the mid 2000s with owners still getting repairs done by SNK.

The only reason SNK stopped offering warranty repairs was because the factories literally shut down. The last CRT factory closed around 2006. SNK couldn't offer repairs on CRT screens or boards anymore. So they had to tell owners they couldn't repair Neo Geos anymore.

neogeo were dead after 2000, years before emulators were even good enough to boot any system. consider medication.

Just exposed yourself as a bonehead, MVS bootlegs are so common that you're more likely to find a converted Puzzle bobble than a real one. That game was so massively popular that bootleggers were converting everything possible to it.

"we went bankrupt due to piracy" is a lot more psychologically easy to take than "we went bankrupt due to mismanagement", which is easier to take than "we went bankrupt because it's statistically likely that a large number of firms in a highly competitive marketplace will go bankrupt, you've just gotta dust yourself off and roll the dice again."

True. But SNK made some pretty bad decisions. It was their fault for going bankrupt. It's not like any other gaming company crushed them. SNK just overspend their money and couldn't pay their bills. Opening amusement parks, and the dumb decision of having their Hyper Neo Geo 64 arcade cabinet only hold 1 game (instead of how the older Neo Geo MVS could hold up to 6 games) really hurt the company.

There are already more games available than a single person can complete during their lifetime. If games ceased to be made entirely starting from yesterday, I'd just carry onward with my life like nothing happened. Most of the series I like have been dead for a while anyway, and it's doubtful if they'd retain the spirit of the originals even if they got revived. Every studio can go bankrupt, I don't care. Piracy is at an all-time low and yet gaming is dying on its own. Every recent game I pirated wouldn't be spending money on if I couldn't get it for free.
