I'd give my left nut for a quick remaster and re-release for current systems.
I wonder if they're gonna do anything, it has been 20 years since the last one.
That's what I do too in new horizons >pick Spanish Main period >start as navy officer >kill all anglos and froggers >capture all lost forts back for the Spain
comfy
Sea Dogs 2 became Pirates of the Caribbean after a licensing deal, and they later changed names to Age of Pirates and then they got the license for Sea Dogs back and everything got retro actively renamed back to Sea Dogs again. so Age of Pirates 2 City of Abandoned Ships became Sea Dogs: City of Abandoned Ships.
and the Russian name for the series is Corsairs.
Its a series that loves changing names! (also they went open source and people have been making mods of their own and even their own games)
I have it installed on my pc but haven't gotten around to playing it. 16:9 aspect ratio and upscaled through DgVoodoo 2.8 with full mouse control.
>wind blowing west
Yeah, I usually play on the lowest difficulty for the constant wind direction too. Navigating on the world map is already slow as it is, it's even slower when the wind constantly keeps shifting around. Can be faster when sailing east, but that's about it.
I just wish they didn't nerf the sword-fighting so hard on the lowest difficulty. You really don't have to even pay attention to your crew number or in-battle morale on lowest, but they suddenly play a large role in your reaction speeds in Easy or higher. You can almost consistently poke an enemy to death on lowest(at least until you get around 45-50 years old), but that shit will get you killed on Easy. As such the game doesn't really teach you how to properly sword fight until you try the next difficulty up. Unless you counter the enemy strikes, you don't get a window to attack. Makes the sword fights far less brain-dead.
You can have consistent wind direction for better navigation, but crap sword fights, or RNG wind and good sword fights, but not both. Makes me wish the Easy difficulty just upgraded the sword fights to the full thing and left the RNG wind for Normal and higher difficulties.
What's the problem with the original
The 2000s remake has dancing, a different swordfighting game, and a different and better land battle game (but which is still pretty bad). Not really different enough to insist one is better imo
I don't think much of the og swordfighting game but the one in the remake doesn't exactly make me excited for a replay either, they're both ok when you're right at the limit of how outnumbered you can be and boring as shit otherwise
I really like how the NES version handles the faux harpsichord music, and this is vr
Frick being a pirate, I'm a goddamn warlord. I once took every territory in the game on swashbuckler as a frenchman (the game always forces one territory to be under a different nation though)
That's what I do too in new horizons >pick Spanish Main period >start as navy officer >kill all anglos and froggers >capture all lost forts back for the Spain
comfy
Sadly if there's one problem I have with Pirates!, it's that the game is basically giving you the middle finger if you pick the Spanish becuase they have all the best shit so you can't get it without attacking your own nation.
No I get that, and you're right that despite how the world looks today, in the 1500s the Spanish and Portuguese got all the best shit in the New World. But it also means picking them as your faction is a trap.

The Spanish wife is objectively the hottest though
He's probably talking about the score chasing.
You got a limited time to play, and you're trying to get as high of gold and fame as you can before retirement. Kind of the same overall goal as playing an arcade game, get the highest score before the levels get too tough.
Space Rangers 2 is an actual forgotten gem. It has the space-faring Pirates! style gameplay, Civ-like planet building and upgrading, an RTS mode when you land on a planet, and even a choose-your-own-style text adventure if you end up in galactic prison.
>And somehow it all works.
because it's programmed by actual mathematician who likes number logic. tell that to Ganker when they say math is not important in programming
SR2 is a 9/10 game. the one big problem it has is that you can totally exhaust its content in one playthrough, but it's one of the best first playthroughs in any game IMO
The sea battles were the best part but should have included your whole fleet somehow. The fighting and the dancing needed improvement. Land battles were a chore. Despite spending a lot of time playing this, I never got very good at it. I never played the original but it seemed to me that it was probably revolutionary for its time. I am a big fan of some of Sid Meier's work.
If I had to give advice on how to do better to the Master himself, I would say less animation more spreadsheets. People fricking love spreadsheets. I don't need to see the same tavern animation 9000 times. All I need to see is the number next to the word 'Crew' go up when I hire them.
I didn't like ships or anything related to sailing before I played this game. It literally gave me my interest in that subject. Nothing compares to steering the ship around tacking against the wind in the middle of a sea battle.
Interesting side note from reading Sid's biography- he argued that the game should have been 2D until his team convinced him otherwise. He finally 'got it' when he played around with the 3D model used for the sea battles. I experienced the exact same moment.
One of those rare PC focused games that is locked to 60fps. I can't even think of another game from that era that doesn't at least support 90fps out of the box
A remaster for Switch that runs in widescreen with some QOL fixes and improved models and those extras from the mobile version would be quite welcome this November.
here are new filters for /vr/
if you remove op:only it filters posts too. because apparently filtering only op is not enough on this forsaken board which went rogue with shitposts lately
/brema(sters?|kes?)/i;boards:v,vr;type:subject,comment
/bre(s|-)released?/i;boards:v,vr;type:subject,comment
I agree with the disdain of remakes in general, and especially on /vr/. But with Pirates, I think of Pirates'87 and Pirates'04 as two different games. Kind of like the difference between Civilization I, Civilization II and Civilization III etc, though I guess those could be considered remakes too tbh.
it's not this that annoys me. it's that people talking about...... remake of a remake.. that's is beyond moronic at this point
also the filters working. you can still click on posts to see poster if you really want to. but should basically shadow ban people that get no replies to cling to
if everyone applies these filters /vr/ would become better place as no one will see the posts therefore will not reply to them

Nta but I can't agree to that, it's like the most b***h move ever, we have places like the SA forums if that's the kind of environment you want. If someone is obviously posting in bad faith, just don't reply to them.
Like seriously man, that kind of attitude would've gotten the shit beaten out of me back in the day because I'd sound like too much of a pussy.

>stretched ui
yeah, no thanks
just use borderless gaming and get 4:3 window
playing Pirates!.exe just made me appreciate New Horizons mod for Sea Dogs a lot more
This isn't pirates! ... What game is this??
Pirates haven had the best music

One of the many Sea Dogs games.

Here's the trailers for some of them.
Why not include information for Build 13 / New Horizons? Did they also release an open-source engine replacement too?
Still the best pirate game to exist.

The gog version works perfectly fine, just install that.
play the original
The original blows.
You have to at least play the Gold edition.
What's the problem with the original
The 2000s remake has dancing, a different swordfighting game, and a different and better land battle game (but which is still pretty bad). Not really different enough to insist one is better imo
Sword fighting sucks in the OG.
Gold Edition (on Genesis) has-
Not potato graphics
Better fencing
Better music
Kind of....better everything.
I don't think much of the og swordfighting game but the one in the remake doesn't exactly make me excited for a replay either, they're both ok when you're right at the limit of how outnumbered you can be and boring as shit otherwise
I really like how the NES version handles the faux harpsichord music, and this is vr
for me it's tape version for nostalgia, c64 disk version for best version
I liked the 2004 remake too though

It's historically accurate for it not to be particularly profitable to be a Spanish pirate. Since uh...they were usually the ones getting robbed.
No I get that, and you're right that despite how the world looks today, in the 1500s the Spanish and Portuguese got all the best shit in the New World. But it also means picking them as your faction is a trap.

I've never played Spanish myself. Ice skating uphill seems slightly less futile.
I always play Spanish. Maybe that's why I don't enjoy the game as much as Sea Dogs
It's extremely easy to change allegiances and be a started-spanish pirate getting titles with the other countries
>remake
uncharted waters 2 is the apex of this genre.
Never heard of it, pitch it to me
I guess that's valid enough a statement, but there's a difference between a thematic genre and a gameplay genre.
How would you define “arcadey”? It feels like a slightly less vague label than “action game” at least, but I'm still curious.
He's probably talking about the score chasing.

nta, buit it feels much faster and overall 'weightless' compared to Sea Dogs.
I like both, though.
why didnt they ever make a space version of this? like how alpha centauri is just civ in space. shit would be so cash.
What about Space Rangers? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Space_Rangers_(video_game)

you can turn it off in the options
Gotta get that indian war canoe, board every time and spam attack. Works with the Genesis version too.
it doesnt work on higher difficulties
Fun while it lasts.
Knowing that can give you a huge boost early on.
This game is almost great.
The sea battles were the best part but should have included your whole fleet somehow. The fighting and the dancing needed improvement. Land battles were a chore. I can’t be the only one thinking of the Irish Rovers right now.

No, the wind is clearly moving west, as it always does.

I'm Dutch, I post Dutch.
