Honestly I feel like we're at the point where instead of individual gen wars it should be more like 2Dgays (Gens 1-5) vs. 3Dgays (Gens 6-9) when it comes to this stupid shit. You could even make it lineargays (Gens 1-7) vs. openworldgays (8 and 9,) both these divisions line up more with series direction and quality more than piddling over which overall very similar old generation is slightly better or worse. Personally while I think the series started going downhill starting with Gen 6, I think Gen 7 was an improvement over 6 and still pretty fun to play. It's only with Gen 8 that the games started to be boring/suck to play, and I don't think that's directly the fault of the open world design as a concept. It's just the most obvious big change that divides it from Gen 7, which is still ultimately very similar to the 2D gens in how it plays and how the world is designed outside of no ocean routes. I haven't played Legends Arceus so I have no opinion on whether or not it did the 'pokemon in an open world' concept better than the Sw/Sh and S/V did.

I can't agree, SV is just as bad as SwSh in my eyes in regards to boring gameplay/world/story, and has even worse pokemon designs overall. 6 and 7 for all their flaws had characters and pokemon I really liked, whereas 8 only has a handful and for 9 it's just like the two Mega Man riffs, Cetitan, Slither Wing, and Ogerpon and all the humans are dumb as shit.

PLA is feels like a core Pokemon game while also feeling like something new. It's the only game that actually feels like it's moving past gen 1/2 traditions/mechanics.

Bdsp is alright, I still play it as I’m a sinnohzoomer and i started with diamond. Overall they did a lot well and a lot not so well. The following pokemon mechanic is laughable compared to past games, the game doesn’t have the move tutor moves from platinum and since this isn’t really gen 4 it’s difficult to get moves from HGSS which also had a pretty buff tm list/move tutor moves. I think that’s probably my biggest gripe, luckily the pokemon have their gen 8 learnsets on level up so you get some good moves but lots of pokemon have straight up worse movepools than they did in gen 4.
