Recently been playing the ps1 version, reached the locked gate on floor 20 something and have no idea what to do next.
what locked gate?
did you kill god for the first time (not the simulation) and see the cutscene ?
did you harvest the pure water?
Got the pure water in the lab and gave it to the npc in the tower, On the next run I reach floor 20 and there's a gate saying "killer" "go away" pushing me back.

basically you need to reload your gun, talk to the Guardian angel to recharge it and get a scolding.

Sounds like bad game design on the level of Dragon Quarter's D Counter
using the gun for the first run is fine, and during the first run you get plenty of hints that using the gun is bad and you shouldn't use it, and the person who gives it to you already doesn't look trustworthy.
you can use it and you'll get an ending if you use it but it's not the "good" ending.

the only think I liked from the PS2 version was the OP, unsurprisingly made by the same studio that did P3's opening
it's an aquired taste. you'll really love it and w on't stop thinking about it for years or you won't care about it at all.
the core gameplay loop is fine but it demands alot of you to get the true ending.
if i had to dumb it down i'd say it's wizardry with a SMT aesthetic.

remember watching a bit of the PS2 ver and the guy didn't use the gun either. I hate when they promote something cool on the games cover but is actually shit in game. looking at you AC2.
if you really want to use the gun and still get the good ending you can, there's an NPC you meet in the latter parts of the dungeon that reloads it for you after scolding you, so you can use it as much as you want before meeting them. it's mostly a moral thing, if you're ok with basically killing children with every bullet then go right ahead.

it has a different vibe and due to the need to translate a single player game into a reading experience it changes several things but for the most part it respects the core plot
think of it as an official AU
i'd like to add that it has its own artistic value even as a standalone product, it's not just a retread of the game, the art is good and there are scenes that definitely tug at the heart strings and make you want to step outside for a second. the interactions with the brother near the end get to me

The Saturn version is the superior version and it got an English patch last summer I think, anyway that's how I played the game. PS1 translation has been around longer so mkst people know that one.
I already did on the Wii but I couldn't get the translation patch for the PS1 version working have they released a patched iso?

nah the differences are purely visual, also performance related like better frame rate, PS1 is pretty choppy.

I played the switch port when it came out several years ago. It was pretty good. It's not as cryptic as it seems, I found it very easy to understand and get into.
I have never heard of this game till right now. Looking into it ill have to give it a try.
