I played it for a bit over the summer. It's fricking trash. I pulled some characters I liked, like Summer Okita Alter and Odysseus, which helped me stick with it for a few months. But I wasn't having any fun actually playing the game.
I pulled shuten somewhere in the beginning and immediately the game sucked. Gachas really make their profit from 24/7 consoomers who always want that 5* dopamine hit.
But they lock the VN behind a shitload of grinding and interrupt the dialog every five lines to drop more wyverns on you.
I made it most of the way through Camelot. You can say I was filtered, but once I started having to actually build my characters properly it didn't take long to realize I hated absolutely everything about the mechanics.

The thing is, by the time you reach there you should have so much SQ you should already have a good size pool of servants to help you tackle that, ever since they added those blue cubes is impossible to get filtered since is basically a "i give up let me win" button
FGO is practically archaic in this modern era of sweeps and player qol, it was one of the very first of the 2nd gen mobage and the only people that defend it are deep, DEEP in the sunk cost zone. I got out a few years ago and it always amuses me to see how little it's changed.
It hasn't changed much, but I think its challenge quests are generally more interesting than what other turn-based gacha have. If you compare it to something like Honkai Star Rail and Reverse: 1999, which both utilized turn-based combat, I think FGO has better highs. HSR doesn't really have anything as neat as Gilfest's offerings.
Nasu disallowing any form of auto or NP skip to the point where objectively weaker characters are moved up in the meta rankings because their attack animations are shorter is so fricking hilarious to me. Not only does FGO make heavy grinding mandatory to farm events, and even dailies, but they make it as obnoxious and unfriendly to do so as possible.
In the age of Star Rail autoplay and BA sweeps, it's hilariously outdated and an obvious turn off to any potential new players.

Auto doesn't work for FGO because that would require programming complex protocols for deciding when and where to use skills, NPs and even certain cards. If the game just blindly utilized everything at the first opportunity, it would fail most quests. This is why FGA isn't true auto. You have to input exactly what actions are performed when.
As for NP skips, that's a flaw of the game's code. NP damage is calculated during the NP's animation. If you skipped the NP animation then no damage calculation happens at all. FGO has some really fricked up spaghetti code, hence why ridiculous issues like the event CE's damage bonus not working for Liz Quest can happen. They STILL haven't fricking fixed it, presumably because they're still trying to figure out what went wrong. Classic spaghetti code issue.

His one major contribution to FGO isn't particularly great and Fate/Requiem isn't all that interesting either, plus he's apparently given up on it because it's been like a few years since the last update.
I think some of it's just the writers moving on from what fans enjoyed about their works and finding new passions. I don't think Urobuchi's gotten WORSE as a writer, but those who enjoyed shit like Saya no Uta may not necessarily enjoy Thunderbolt Fantasy because it's a completely different thing. Nasu himself clearly started moving away from his original style in KnK and Tsukihime by the time of around Fate/EXTRA, and you can easily see that FGO is in many ways an extension of that. They're not necessarily worse on a technical level, but they just want to write about different things now. But Sakurai and Hoshizora definitely fricking degraded.
Narita's a funny case. I think it's less that he's gotten worse, and more that somehow, Fate/strange fake has caused him to dive headlong into his worst qualities as a writer. The flaws in F/sf have always existed in his writing before, it's just worse now.
