I'm going to take this as the thumbs up on writing similar essays on characters and maybe some plot elements I find interesting if I still want more by the end.
Also I forgot to write in that Y'shtola's reactions to Lyse first revealing her impersonation and later that she was dropping out of the Scions were also a pretty big indicator of the sort of mentality she had towards close friends at that point, with her trying to lessen Lyse's guild and shame by completely noselling it.

But all in all a great summary. She really is a victim of being incredibly bad with emotions and bottling them up. Most other Scions wear their emotions on their sleeves.
I actually left a whole fricking lot of stuff out. I could have made a point of how many times in the story is she the one to solve a problem to show how useful she can be, I could have gone deeper into her relationship with the other Scions (I actually started to write about the beautiful scene she has with Urianger describing the night sky to her, but decided that was too much wanking for something everyone has seen), etc. Mostly I was just aiming to describe her inner struggles and mental processes to show that she really is a nuanced character. Seriously, all of the Scions are, which is why I would like to write more of these, I often see people unfairly shit on one or more of them, and while it's fair to criticize specific points of them (the writing in this game is not perfect at all) I really do feel like most people who hate on one of them do it because they don't absorb every twist of their character.
Also when I say "Scions" I also mean "pretty much every major character in the game".

Fair enough, it is better to be brief to get a point across at times. I think the gravest sin XIV did was not having more of 6.1, where you genuinely are able to interact with characters in a low stake environment. The answer choices you had were really different and changed the cutscenes a bit. If they did that a bit more regularly the XIV cast would rank among VI and IX as far as main parties go. Being able to snark back at Y'shtola was so nice, since she greatly seemed to enjoy the back and forth. One of the few times we were able to signal to anyone "Yeah, I like you a lot too!"
This is kind of BS. For one, it completely glosses over the central character trait SE keeps pushing for Y'shtola: her QUEST FOR KNOWLEDGE. They bash you over the head that she researches for research sake and doesn't need a higher purpose. Also, there's nothing to indicate that she's planning on hopping around the realms to help "marginalized communities" like the Night's Blessed. She wants to travel the realms for the sake of knowledge, and she wants to get back to the Night's Blessed because she still has an affinity for them.
I didn't mention her quest for knowledge because it's a part of her character that remains more or less static the entire game. At no point does she hesitate on whether she should give it up, she gets praised for it by Hydaelyn, and the only time anyone ever questions that aspect of her character is by the Ea, which I did mention. >Also, there's nothing to indicate that she's planning on hopping around the realms to help "marginalized communities" like the Night's Blessed.
She literally said so out loud. "Other shards might still be in need of help, that's why I plan on seeking them out". Both in ShB and in EW. Hell I'm like 95% sure she did say so in 6.1 too, and either way this very last patch she remarked to Estinien how finding a way back to the First is just a step, not her goal.
It's the same delusional homosexual who keeps trying to claim she's a main companion for Alexander despite her showing up once while you aren't there to scream at the camera "it's a primal!" and then one more time so she can see the aether being rewound by his time magic. That's all, but he keeps trying to cope and say how vital she was to that storyline.

Yeah, that anon was as much of an idiot as they sounded in the other thread. The entire pic is basically 'things happen and she reacts, this proves that she is a compelling character'. Most people can remember the shit she's involved in, the things she likes, and the things she does. But she is the fricking POSTER GIRL for XIV who has gotten major screentime in every single expac since ARR but the best you can come up with is 'she has a martyr complex because she tries to protect the people close to her (like every other scion)' or 'Y'Shtola and Matoya actually love each other', which was established in Matoya's first fricking scene in Heavensward. They haven't 'discovered' anything that other people have missed, Y'Shtola just doesn't have much going for her as a character. I like her a lot, sure. She's the witty, sarcastic, brownish catgirl nerd with a soft spot for her companions. But she is practically a static character compared to literally everyone else in the main cast.

Exactly what do you expect to come out of an argument like this? You're even leaving out information now on purpose, like the fact Matoya doesn't just rag on Alphinaud, Matoya rags on Alphinaud and then Y'shtola jumps in to defend him, which is a meaningful thing no matter how much you don't want it to be.
It's also funny you bring up Urianger's arc because I was gonna point out in the future that Urianger, despite having a very compelling story, doesn't fundamentally change at all from it. Finding himself constantly in the liar role doesn't actually do anything for him as a character, because it's just actions that are forced on him with barely a choice and that he regrets immediately. You appropiately did say Thancred changes a whole fricking lot, pretty much has nothing to do between start and finish, but Urianger is fundamentally the exact same person because all of the things that happen to him don't actuall challenge his values. Y'shtola legit does change more than he does.

Yeah. Because just like then, he feels it was wrong but necessary. He feels guilt, but do you think he would not follow the same steps at every point? Obviously not counting stuff that's not up to him to change like saving Moenbryda, but if the Urianger we have in EW got once again faced with the decision to either save the First or let Minfilia be, do you seriously think he'd change? Do you think he'd go back on his acts and change history by letting the First fall? Or do you think he'd once again suck it up and do what needs to be done? Because there's a difference between a character that changes because they realize they were wrong, and a character that laments something they had to do but still doesn't think it was the wrong choice.
Urianger has a very similar arc to Y'shtola (learning to open up to others) but does it in a much more compelling way, given that he actually faces challenges along his journey which is more than can be said for Y'shtola.
Urianger doesn't have a problem opening up though, he has a problem where he's forced in situations where he has to lie. In fact he's one of the most open Scions, do you not remember the scenes where he gives pep talks to Ryne, to the loporrits? Their arc is not similar at all, if anything Y'shtola's arc would be similar to Thancred, because he also caused most of his problems because he couldn't just open up. Urianger's problems come from being pragmatic, not taciturn.

I expect you, if you are the one who wrote that image, to defend your point. Your point should be 'You are wrong, Y'Shtola does have a chracter arc' but your points are all 'Y'Shtola reacts to things in this way'. A character that only reacts to outside forces is a passive character, a prop that speaks. One who doesn't go through their own story, which is the entire problem with her. She always loved Matoya even if they snip at each other, everyone in the Scions is heroic so her risk-taking acts don't stand out, there are many smart scholars from Sharlyan in the Scions alone... there isn't much that sets her apart as her own character and she doesn't really have any struggles that are unique to her. The most she's had is her relationship to the Night's Blessed, which was always going to be temporary.

Urianger is struggling with guilt at both Moenbryda's death and deceiving his comrades the entire game, again both lines converging at being forgiven by Moenbryda's parents who he had been avoiding since her death. You don't seem to understand what people are complaining about, and are overtly hostile at anyone who disagrees with you

absolutely nothing tbh, mechanically its much more barren than classic era wow. BLM for example has a complex "rotation" but it only *does* two things: aoe damage and single target damage, compared to mage, which had tons of CC it also had to manage.
Can't really say there is one, the closest thing in lore is white mage because they're supposed to be defenders of the forest or some shit but it loses it's nature themed abilities at 70
FF plays it way too safe to have any whacky jobs. I guess the most hybrid you got was ARR SCH, who legit did more AoE DOS than some dedicated damage classes and was an amazing healer. You switched forms between DPS and healing and your pet was even able to be used in certain mechanics.
Now adays XIV basically has 5 classes "Tank", "Healer", "Melee DPS", "Ranged DPS" and "Magic DPS". The jobs within each class have marginal differences but at the core all play the same.
Leveling Arcanist gives you access to Summoner and Scholar, a caster dps and healer that level together.
Leveling Marauder gives you Warrior, which is basically a tank and off-healer at the same time.
Leveling Conjurer gives you White Mage, which has a nature theme that’s somewhat similar to shamans or druids.
And there’s the Blue Mage, which is the only job that can be a tank, healer, or dps. Instead of learning abilities through leveling, you learn them from fighting animals and monsters. Unlike the other jobs, it’s “limited”, meaning you can’t use it in the main story or duty finder.

Well, not exactly true anon. Luck plays a fairly big part too, towards the end. Sometimes you have just a cancer floorset multiple floors in a row when low on poms because of bad luck or completely unkillable mobs in a treasure room that is blocking your way to the exit, doable with a ress but the timer is the biggest enemy high-up. Then there's the fact that if the spaghetti game code DCs you even once you just lost your entire run too. But yeah you're right it's mostly your own ability and pretty fun, just frick the first 100 floors of boredom, I honestly wouldn't give a shit if there was a perma checkpoint there, it's just tedium running it back. HoH is better in the sense that it's only 100 floors

Mounts inside of Eulmore would have been a nightmare though.

I think you can only have one of the highest tier (X) materia equipped on one piece of gear at a time. The next level (IX) is the one used for overmelding, hence why they're more expensive since you need a frickload of them.

You're not supposed to hardcast those 5 second long spells. You have a short cast spell called Jolt or some shit. Cast that first, it gives you dualcast (your next spell has zero cast time) then your 5 second ones. You're supposed to weave those until you get 80+/80+ bar then you do your melee combo and repeat.

Endwalker feels so much like a gimme of an expansion. Just gotta cut out the Garlean business, throw it into its own expansion so Endwalker itself will be more focused on the Final Days. Even the relics are pretty much free.
The frick are you even using a mouse for in a tab-targeting game? Only legitimate reason I see using a mouse for in ARR is mouse-over macros for healers, but that also works as a detriment because the game can't queue macros.
Play FFXI if you want a real MMO, 1.0 was made by an outsourced chinese team and it showed, it was bad and will NEVER be playable again for good reason.

I'm going to take this as the thumbs up on writing similar essays on characters and maybe some plot elements I find interesting if I still want more by the end.
Also I forgot to write in that Y'shtola's reactions to Lyse first revealing her impersonation and later that she was dropping out of the Scions were also a pretty big indicator of the sort of mentality she had towards close friends at that point, with her trying to lessen Lyse's guild and shame by completely noselling it.

I actually left a whole fricking lot of stuff out. I could have made a point of how many times in the story is she the one to solve a problem to show how useful she can be, I could have gone deeper into her relationship with the other Scions (I actually started to write about the beautiful scene she has with Urianger describing the night sky to her, but decided that was too much wanking for something everyone has seen), etc. Mostly I was just aiming to describe her inner struggles and mental processes to show that she really is a nuanced character. Seriously, all of the Scions are, which is why I would like to write more of these, I often see people unfairly shit on one or more of them, and while it's fair to criticize specific points of them (the writing in this game is not perfect at all) I really do feel like most people who hate on one of them do it because they don't absorb every twist of their character.
Also when I say "Scions" I also mean "pretty much every major character in the game".
Fair enough, it is better to be brief to get a point across at times. I think the gravest sin XIV did was not having more of 6.1, where you genuinely are able to interact with characters in a low stake environment. The answer choices you had were really different and changed the cutscenes a bit. If they did that a bit more regularly the XIV cast would rank among VI and IX as far as main parties go.
Being able to snark back at Y'shtola was so nice, since she greatly seemed to enjoy the back and forth. One of the few times we were able to signal to anyone "Yeah, I like you a lot too!"
This is kind of BS. For one, it completely glosses over the central character trait SE keeps pushing for Y'shtola: her QUEST FOR KNOWLEDGE. They bash you over the head that she researches for research sake and doesn't need a higher purpose. Also, there's nothing to indicate that she's planning on hopping around the realms to help "marginalized communities" like the Night's Blessed. She wants to travel the realms for the sake of knowledge, and she wants to get back to the Night's Blessed because she still has an affinity for them.

Most people can remember the shit she's involved in, the things she likes, and the things she does. But she is the fricking POSTER GIRL for XIV who has gotten major screentime in every single expac since ARR but the best you can come up with is 'she has a martyr complex because she tries to protect the people close to her (like every other scion)' or 'Y'Shtola and Matoya actually love each other', which was established in Matoya's first fricking scene in Heavensward. They haven't 'discovered' anything that other people have missed, Y'Shtola just doesn't have much going for her as a character. I like her a lot, sure. She's the witty, sarcastic, brownish catgirl nerd with a soft spot for her companions. But she is practically a static character compared to literally everyone else in the main cast.

You appropiately did say Thancred changes a whole fricking lot, pretty much has nothing to do between start and finish, but Urianger is fundamentally the exact same person because all of the things that happen to him don't actuall challenge his values. Obviously not counting stuff that's not up to him to change like saving Moenbryda, but if the Urianger we have in EW got once again faced with the decision to either save the First or let Minfilia be, do you seriously think he'd change? Do you think he'd go back on his acts and change history by letting the First fall? Or do you think he'd once again suck it up and do what needs to be done? Because there's a difference between a character that changes because they realize they were wrong, and a character that laments something they had to do but still doesn't think it was the wrong choice.
Urianger doesn't have a problem opening up though, he has a problem where he's forced in situations where he has to lie. In fact he's one of the most open Scions, do you not remember the scenes where he gives pep talks to Ryne, to the loporrits? Their arc is not similar at all, if anything Y'shtola's arc would be similar to Thancred, because he also caused most of his problems because he couldn't just open up. Urianger's problems come from being pragmatic, not taciturn.

Urianger is struggling with guilt at both Moenbryda's death and deceiving his comrades the entire game, again both lines converging at being forgiven by Moenbryda's parents who he had been avoiding since her death. You don't seem to understand what people are complaining about, and are overtly hostile at anyone who disagrees with you

There's no transforming job if that's what you're looking for. White Mage does sort of fit the "nature healer" shtick, but it's mixed in with priest.
absolutely nothing tbh, mechanically its much more barren than classic era wow. BLM for example has a complex "rotation" but it only *does* two things: aoe damage and single target damage, compared to mage, which had tons of CC it also had to manage.
Can't really say there is one, the closest thing in lore is white mage because they're supposed to be defenders of the forest or some shit but it loses it's nature themed abilities at 70
FF plays it way too safe to have any whacky jobs. I guess the most hybrid you got was ARR SCH, who legit did more AoE DOS than some dedicated damage classes and was an amazing healer. You switched forms between DPS and healing and your pet was even able to be used in certain mechanics.
Now adays XIV basically has 5 classes "Tank", "Healer", "Melee DPS", "Ranged DPS" and "Magic DPS". The jobs within each class have marginal differences but at the core all play the same.

Leveling Arcanist gives you access to Summoner and Scholar, a caster dps and healer that level together.
Leveling Marauder gives you Warrior, which is basically a tank and off-healer at the same time.
Leveling Conjurer gives you White Mage, which has a nature theme that’s somewhat similar to shamans or druids.
And there’s the Blue Mage, which is the only job that can be a tank, healer, or dps. Instead of learning abilities through leveling, you learn them from fighting animals and monsters. Unlike the other jobs, it’s “limited”, meaning you can’t use it in the main story or duty finder.

Well, not exactly true anon. Luck plays a fairly big part too, towards the end. Sometimes you have just a cancer floorset multiple floors in a row when low on poms because of bad luck or completely unkillable mobs in a treasure room that is blocking your way to the exit, doable with a ress but the timer is the biggest enemy high-up. Then there's the fact that if the spaghetti game code DCs you even once you just lost your entire run too. But yeah you're right it's mostly your own ability and pretty fun, just frick the first 100 floors of boredom, I honestly wouldn't give a shit if there was a perma checkpoint there, it's just tedium running it back. HoH is better in the sense that it's only 100 floors

7/8 materia are for equipment up to level 80. 9/10 materia are for equipment up to level 90
7 and 9 are basically the same and can be spammed without limit
8 and 10 are high end and can only go in the first two slots (or sometimes the third slot)
I think you can only have one of the highest tier (X) materia equipped on one piece of gear at a time. The next level (IX) is the one used for overmelding, hence why they're more expensive since you need a frickload of them.

You're not supposed to hardcast those 5 second long spells. You have a short cast spell called Jolt or some shit. Cast that first, it gives you dualcast (your next spell has zero cast time) then your 5 second ones. You're supposed to weave those until you get 80+/80+ bar then you do your melee combo and repeat.

Gameplay enhancements wont be felt during MSQ. SB is probably the most devisive expac MSQ, a lot of people dislike it due to its horrid pace and if Lyse doesnt work for you youll have a bad time. Ill say the patch msq is pretty good tho. Primal fights are good, raid is fun and tge 24man is a must if you like ff tactics.

said. HW is really the big point in which you decide either that the game isn't for you or that you're in for the long haul. If you finished HW and are still dubious, you're probably never going to get it better just for continuing.
Though getting to higher levels does complete more of your kit if your only issue is gameplay. If you just merely want a more complex rotation, you can continue.
Endwalker feels so much like a gimme of an expansion. Just gotta cut out the Garlean business, throw it into its own expansion so Endwalker itself will be more focused on the Final Days. Even the relics are pretty much free.

What? I have never watched a single youtube video to set it up. Just drag stuff to the hotbar until it fills up, then go to settings and enable the xbar which is very intuitive to use.
Besides even if did take 20 hours of youtube videos to use a controller in this game, you are going to be spend vastly more than 20 hours in the game so you don't have the time to play the game at all.
Might try to investigate further at a later date. Playing bard in ShB broke me with a kb+m.
