I did. It was a mess. I wish Matsuno acutally finished it.
It was an amazing magazine for the first ten or so years, with the original lineup of writers + editor.
>15 seconds of story >4 hours of walking through massive empty zones >15 seconds of story >boss fight >repeat
i'd rather corridor a simulator than 12's mind numbing cyclical tedium
>boss fight
*which you don't actually play, you just program a macro and go make a cup of tea
Him, Nojima, Toriyama, and Nomura have spent the last 20 years raping the series name; I don't care how many good games he made when he was being shepherded by Ito and Sakaguchi, I care about the fact that once Sakaguchi left he got right to making the series utter dogshit.
>once Sakaguchi left he got right to making the series utter dogshit.
6 and 7 = the greatest in the series. Not a single person will disagree. And those were both directed by Kitase.
Sakaguchi literally killed Square with the spirits within.
Dude how the frick Sakaguchi let Spirits Within reach a budget of 137m in 2001? This is equivalent of 233m nowadays.
He, as a new director, burned 233m of the company by working on his first film. This is pure insanity.
Not even Dune is cost that much.
At that point i believe Sakaguchi had his ego on an all-time high. Square were on Rockstar levels of success. So he probably believed it would be fine, everything was doing well anyway, they were at the top.
But then he went to make the movie without any of the talented staff he relied on so much. He was a producer, his skill was to find talented people and put them on specific roles, like Kitase as director, or noticing Nomura's talent, Tokita, Matsuno...
So producing the movie alone ended up on that massive shitshow.
it was the best looking CGI in human history up to that point. You can't even imagine what that would look like today because CGI has platued pretty hard.
>15 seconds of story >4 hours of walking through massive empty zones >15 seconds of story >boss fight >repeat
i'd rather corridor a simulator than 12's mind numbing cyclical tedium

and yet it's still more enjoyable than every other mainline
>4 hours of walking through massive empty zones
This comment is so objectively untrue jesus fricking age Christ. I've spent numerous hours grinding in every single zone in the game and there's plenty of enemies and landmarks in each one.
Nah it could have been but it wasn't >gambits make combat automated so most of the time you're just walking forward and watching the AI play the game for you >no many real sidequests aside from hunts >farming shit to get the materials for the best weapons can be a complete slog >mist attacks are shit
It feels like it would have been much better if they had made it more like a Bioware RPG because it plays like a Bioware RPG except worse.
>It feels like it would have been much better if they had made it more like a Bioware RPG because it plays like a Bioware RPG except worse
Playing it for the first time now, and these are my thoughts exactly. makes me want to play kotor or da:o again instead. I just got off Xenoblade X and even that felt more fulfulling.
That's literally what they were thinking. It was even marketed as such. MMOs were new and exciting back then. Frick, anything that had to do with computers back then had an almost mystical aura.
>first 10 hours of the game are incredible >music is some of the best i've ever heard from the franchise
is legitimately one of the top 10 FF tracks >gradually everything gets shittier >the story slows down, the zones get boring, the music gets shitty >game ends in a completely unsatisfying way
you can tell exactly when the development fell apart. such a shame. the game opens so damn strong
The game does have a great OST.
Not my FF favorite OST but its definitely fantastic regardless.
I really like the themes for Rabanastre both upper and lower.
Though I still think FFX is my favorite soundtrack in the series along with FFXIV. At this point XIV has too many fantastic songs to ignore.
>tfw you'll never get that mainline entirely completed by Matsuno and are instead banished to 20 years of Kitaseshit and pale imitations
XII is unironically the biggest what-if in the entire series history and still ends up being the best 3D game they ever made.
Him, Nojima, Toriyama, and Nomura have spent the last 20 years raping the series name; I don't care how many good games he made when he was being shepherded by Ito and Sakaguchi, I care about the fact that once Sakaguchi left he got right to making the series utter dogshit.
Literally every failure with FF has nothing to do with them except arguably Toriyama for betting it all on a dumb vision for FF13. SE business management is just fricked.
>shepherded by Ito and Sakaguchi
lol
Without Kitase FF wouldn't be a household name. He was the one that evolved the franchise from generic fantasy and came up with multiple incredible settings that were beloved by millions, with engaging stories and memorable characters.
The fact that he became a soulless businessman (which is what a producer essentially is) is sad, but I don't think he deserves the blame for the state of the franchise post-X. He's just a company man, directors are expected to move up in the company as they get older.
It's a Square-Enix problem, they are a mess.
>What a moronic argument.
Final Fantasy X, Final Fantasy X-2, Final Fantasy VII Compilation Material, Final Fantasy XIII, Final Fantasy XIII-2, Final Fantasy XIII-3, Crystal Tools, Final Fantasy XII Revenant Wings, Final Fantasy Type-0, Final Fantasy XIIIV/XV, Dirge of Cerberus, and just as a cherry on top, 3rd Birthday. >b-b-but le SNES era

What's cope is hating Nomura when he has been the creative for the best games the company has made in recent memory. Or hating Kitase because......he is just bad, ok? Even Nojima and Toriyama get too much hate, sometimes you don't always make something every moronic fan likes. XV and the initial XIV failures are really the only big nightmares for FF and even then XIV was redeemed and considered the best game in the series and atleast lik 30% of normies like XV. Compliation is fine Crisis Core is one of the best FF spin-offs. It just isn't as bad as you think it is.

No, X is the beginning of the problem and is a testament to the incompetence of everyone at BD1 in regards to their ability to properly manage the Final Fantasy brand. Should've just stuck with Kingdom Hearts.
It wasn't even a bad movie, it was just kind of okay but it cost too much for them to recoup the money.

homie what? the series had moved beyond what you are describing like 3 games before Kitase was ever involved in a meaningful way, FFIV exists, as does V and eventually VI, which Kitase had no hand in "evolving" and was only partially credited to a story that was created by Sakaguchi
I tried it when I was a teenager on launch and didn't care for it. I'm willing to give it another shot, but only when it drops below $20 on steam, which hasn't happened yet.
Completely off-topic to the current thread conversation but does anyone remember that Tactics re-release leak that said it would include WotL/TA/A2 to tie into a new Ivalice title? With Matsuno teasing VS2 on his Twitter (I use tease lightly) I'm really hoping it pans out to be true. I'd love to get one last game from him.

Ivalice gays have the biggest inferiority complex between all the ff fanbases, not even joking, there is a constant need to prove themselves. X being one of the most loved games also doesnt helps. It is sad because XII is great, but the fanbase is broken.
That's true
But one thing i find strange about matsuno gays is how it is almost like some of them have 0 respect for Matsuno writing.
Everything they think it is good was created by Matsuno, but if Matsuno talks about how he created Vaan they start believing on random theories of how that's not true, it is so weird. They accept what they like but delete elements Matsuno wanted there when they dont think it's convenient.
I wonder what Matsuno himself thinks of this type of behavior.
But this makes total sense. The most contrarian group of individuals, who talk shit about the whole franchise and cant accept narrative decisions even when the official writer confirms it, end up fighting between themselves. It's poetic.
XII related discussions always end this way, they get mad because most people dont find the game the absolute masterpiece as they think it is, with comments as "offline mmo, vaan is trash". So the only cope is to start trash talking the whole franchise.
