But Rance VI is amazing too. And Rance Quest is really great as well. IX and X are even better but they aren't in English.
4 and 3 are also good to great.

That's underselling it a lot.
For a dungeon crawler the party size is pretty massive. And thanks to how the game handles stamina, all characters are useful and you're incentivized to use all of them, constructing various teams for different purposes or tasks depending on what stage/part you are in a dungeon and or what your current goals are. And with customization and character progression for each individual character, combined with the team customization and loadouts themselves. You get a lot of depth and even player expression with how it all plays out.
The actual dungeon designs are also excellent. With the dungeons/labyrinths actually shaping up to be visually distinct and recognizable as very real or even practical places. The prison looks like a prison first and foremost. The museum actually looks like a museum. And they achieve this without compromising their functions as dungeons/labyrinths.
What's more, the items, resources, and even lore/fluff that you find all serves really well to incentivize full exploration of the dungeons. Which in turn ties into the dungeon crawling as stamina is limited.
The combat is pretty good too and actually somewhat strategic, in that different approaches to different combat situations will actually have a massive effect to how efficiently you'll get through it all.
And then of course. The writing, characters, and comedy are all excellent. Pretty good porn too.
Yes VI is a DRPG. But it is an excellent one that proudly stand alongside the best the genre has to offer.
Which is why 5 is just silly. But 3 isn't bad. It's the 4 games that's where the games actually become great though and it's consistently great from there. Or at least it is if you don't insist that 5d breaks it.

1. Because a lot of the prior Rance games have dungeon crawling in one form or another. So it's tradition.
2. Kichikuou, which Sengoku is modelled after, has dungeon crawling. And for better or worse it has a lot of it. A lot more than Sengoku does.
Sengoku actually toned it down a lot.
3. It was a good idea to include it in one fashion or another. It lends credence to the idea that while army battles are a thing, the Rance world is a world of heroes and adventurers. And the inclusion of dungeons and personal battles shows that even during Sengoku this holds true.
Sengoku's dungeons operate under quite different rules from the core gameplay. But I dare say they're pretty fun once you wrap your head around them. And it's kind of neat how some units that are shit for army battles are actually great for dungeons and vice versa.
This guy knows what's up. I played the game for a hundred hours or so but quit it once I realized that dungeon crawling every turn is op and had to spend an eternity every turn grinding them.
I might try it again sometime and just accept that I'm playing non optimally by only doing them occasionally, but I remember the game being hard as shit.
It's been over a decade so my memory is hazy, but I remember there being random drops and the levels gained from the dungeon strengthening the unit's army. I think you got money too.

If you're autistic enough I believe you could savescum the item drops if you were unsatisfied with what you got. But you only get a fixed amount of awards per dungen and you only level up once. And some items for some dungeons are fixed and not random.
After you've completed a dungeon it's done.
Booted the game up to check. You still get random drops after beating the dungeon but a lot less of them. I guess it's questionable if it's the best method but my younger self figured it was the way to grind my units up to max stats I guess.
So I found out toushin toshi 2 got an all ages remake on 3ds in 2014.

If you just explore and properly circle around the dungeons every time you head out to a dungeon, to actually grab all available orbs. And stay in the dungeon for long enough to at least grab two thirds or more of the achievement awards. Then you should never really have to struggle with orbs.
I see people condemn the orb system a lot but I don't really get it. I never really had to grind myself until I reached the post game. With very brief and few exceptions. And even in the post game I never needed to do any notable orb grind. I just made sure to always grab all the orbs I could as I played the game normally. Which I wouldn't classify as grind by a long shot.

Zeth is good if you have magic/live there after Rance's civil rights movement and Japan isn't so bad once it's united and not in a constant state of war.

when does quest get good? I was kind of enjoying it even though it was slow but then I unlocked that swamp level and decided it was time to grind all my characters but that made me get bored and stop playing.
Quest for me was pretty much a slow burn. There's not a real narrative until the second half so for the most part it's just a bunch of disconnected quests. So some are better than others and peaks with a few of them.
It unironically takes like 30 hours to get to the really good stuff but Quest is essentially as good as you want to make it. It has pretty much every character you've met in the series up to that point and has plenty of interactions with them all. Crook's chapters were always my favorite though.
Pretty late in the game honestly. I do recommend looking at a character walkthrough if there is specific characters you are trying to obtain and do stuff with. It is very easy to miss stuff in Quest.
I heard the translator for wants to finish the translation for the game by the end of this year. Sounds shaky but even then the script insertion and beta testing would probably also take long.
That is Steiner claiming he'll be finished translating X by the end of this year. X won't be out until at least 2025/26 probably. Between editing/text insertion/QA/image editing, it still has a lot of work to be done and MG is one of the worst publishers in the business when it comes to speed.

Rance as a franchise is unironically and genuinely unique in the videogame space, or in general.
It's a franchise that ran for 3 full decades, with over a dozen of entries to its name. But unlike other long running franchises such as Final Fantasy or Zelda or whatever, Rance actually ran a consistent and coherent narrative through, that continued to build off of the same setting and characters through entry to entry. And the end result is just kind of amazing and not something you'll find elsewhere.
The closest thing you'll find is probably the Ys series, but it doesn't quite compete in the end.
Rance as a franchise is not only great. It's a marvel and it's pretty amazing that it exists at all. That it just so happen to be porn ontop of all of this is just kind of amusing, but the porn contributes in its own way and hardly detracts from worth or experience of the franchise. The shun the franchise for being porn is really missing out on something both spectacular and unique.

VI has passable but ultimately really mundane and barebones dungeon crawler gameplay. Absolutely nothing special about it. Characters and plot carry it all the way.

That's underselling it a lot.
For a dungeon crawler the party size is pretty massive. And thanks to how the game handles stamina, all characters are useful and you're incentivized to use all of them, constructing various teams for different purposes or tasks depending on what stage/part you are in a dungeon and or what your current goals are. And with customization and character progression for each individual character, combined with the team customization and loadouts themselves. You get a lot of depth and even player expression with how it all plays out.
The actual dungeon designs are also excellent. With the dungeons/labyrinths actually shaping up to be visually distinct and recognizable as very real or even practical places. The prison looks like a prison first and foremost. The museum actually looks like a museum. And they achieve this without compromising their functions as dungeons/labyrinths.
What's more, the items, resources, and even lore/fluff that you find all serves really well to incentivize full exploration of the dungeons. Which in turn ties into the dungeon crawling as stamina is limited.
The combat is pretty good too and actually somewhat strategic, in that different approaches to different combat situations will actually have a massive effect to how efficiently you'll get through it all.
And then of course. The writing, characters, and comedy are all excellent. Pretty good porn too.
Yes VI is a DRPG. But it is an excellent one that proudly stand alongside the best the genre has to offer.
3 is a glorified autobattle simulator and 5 is just a pachinko machine

The simplicity of the originals makes them extremely quick and swift to play through. Like you can get through 1 in a single sitting. And it might be kind of cool to see the retro visuals to see how the franchise has grown.
Meanwhile 01 might take a couple of days. But 01 does have more fanservice. And the new visuals might be appreciated.
The original games really are a product of their time and fascinating little studies. Rance 4 is perfectly playable by itself, at least.
I played Sengoku first and then went back to play them all and it was fine.
They are short. The 2nd game never got an actual remake so it doesn't matter which one you play. It only got an optional script patch which wasn't standard for some reason. Both the remake of the first and the third differ from the originals so you might as well.

Start with Sengoku then go back to the start and play chronological order

1. Because a lot of the prior Rance games have dungeon crawling in one form or another. So it's tradition.
2. Kichikuou, which Sengoku is modelled after, has dungeon crawling. And for better or worse it has a lot of it. A lot more than Sengoku does.
Sengoku actually toned it down a lot.
3. It was a good idea to include it in one fashion or another. It lends credence to the idea that while army battles are a thing, the Rance world is a world of heroes and adventurers. And the inclusion of dungeons and personal battles shows that even during Sengoku this holds true.
Sengoku's dungeons operate under quite different rules from the core gameplay. But I dare say they're pretty fun once you wrap your head around them. And it's kind of neat how some units that are shit for army battles are actually great for dungeons and vice versa.
I just feel like there is not enough action points to play both the strategy part and the dungeon part.

If you're autistic enough I believe you could savescum the item drops if you were unsatisfied with what you got. But you only get a fixed amount of awards per dungen and you only level up once. And some items for some dungeons are fixed and not random.
After you've completed a dungeon it's done.
Booted the game up to check. You still get random drops after beating the dungeon but a lot less of them. I guess it's questionable if it's the best method but my younger self figured it was the way to grind my units up to max stats I guess.

If you just explore and properly circle around the dungeons every time you head out to a dungeon, to actually grab all available orbs. And stay in the dungeon for long enough to at least grab two thirds or more of the achievement awards. Then you should never really have to struggle with orbs.
I see people condemn the orb system a lot but I don't really get it. I never really had to grind myself until I reached the post game. With very brief and few exceptions. And even in the post game I never needed to do any notable orb grind. I just made sure to always grab all the orbs I could as I played the game normally. Which I wouldn't classify as grind by a long shot.
I suppose most people just gun for the goal as soon as possible and don't bother with map completion. And I understand to a degree if you don't have monster repellent and haven't created a specifically for dungeon scouring
Creating teams for exploration and long term longevity. A team for boss or difficult encounters. And other various gimmick teams for specific situations. Is part of the fun.
I really hope people aren't just rushing through dungeons with a power team and gunning it to the end before their power team runs out of SP.
Separating characters into camps where ones handle scouting and the other handles fights or whatever else is my go to as well. But I guess people aren't as dedicated to building teams
Collecting orbs isn't fun and I don't believe in hacking unless it's for trolling morons in a multiplayer game.

It's been years since I played 03, but I remember the gameplay being decent enough. They made the "dungeon crawling" more complex compared to 01 and the battle system was just the typical turn-based JRPG gameplay, though simplified.

when does quest get good? I was kind of enjoying it even though it was slow but then I unlocked that swamp level and decided it was time to grind all my characters but that made me get bored and stop playing.
Quest for me was pretty much a slow burn. There's not a real narrative until the second half so for the most part it's just a bunch of disconnected quests. So some are better than others and peaks with a few of them.
Never only Sengoku is good.
It unironically takes like 30 hours to get to the really good stuff but Quest is essentially as good as you want to make it. It has pretty much every character you've met in the series up to that point and has plenty of interactions with them all. Crook's chapters were always my favorite though.

Pretty late in the game honestly. I do recommend looking at a character walkthrough if there is specific characters you are trying to obtain and do stuff with. It is very easy to miss stuff in Quest.

I heard the translator for wants to finish the translation for the game by the end of this year. Sounds shaky but even then the script insertion and beta testing would probably also take long.
That is Steiner claiming he'll be finished translating X by the end of this year. X won't be out until at least 2025/26 probably. Between editing/text insertion/QA/image editing, it still has a lot of work to be done and MG is one of the worst publishers in the business when it comes to speed.
