Never played it, I consider it mor of a curiosity than anything else. From what I can understand it's the slowest paced FPS game I've ever seen, what's the appeal?

dungeon-crawling. It really does feel like you're dungeon-crawling like in Ultima UW, EOTB, etc.
There's something to be said about how the series is designed (the slowness)
It's a huge game filled with interconnected areas. So you're slowly making your way through this fricking maze of a game, and by the end it becomes satisfying. It must be because you're so slow, that when you get start getting new abilities that make everything suck less, it gets more and more fun. Whether that's good or not, idk, worth arguing about, but I do wanna say that I think it's exactly the same way that Armored Core wins you over. If you've ever played an Armored Core (retro) you'll know it feels like garbage to play. And the combat is not fun or fluid at all. But here's the kicker, you stick with Armored Core, and you start getting mech parts that make it suck less. Both series are the epitome of "it gets good 20 hours in"
though whether it's really good or not idk

Back when devs had the balls to stress and frustrate the player and weren't terrified that children (and manchildren) would get sad when they failed or got lost

They're still stressing and frustrating players with their games today. Except turns out it can also have good gameplay while being stressful. Turns out, unrelated

King's Field has good gameplay. I used to be one of those people who saw it on youtube and thought it was way too slow to play but the pace of the game is what makes the atmosphere and tension work. Modern FS doesn't care about atmosphere and the allegorical content is a self referencing meme at this point

vr won't like to hear this but emulator overclocking in these games (at least on the PS1 games) will produce a better game experience by raising the game speed and frame rate. It's not 1:1, going from the usual 21fps the games ran at natively (iirc) to an overclock that produces a 40ish fps frame rate does not double the game speed or double the speed of the game's music. But it's definitely a bit faster than native, kind of like going from street fighter 2 to hyper fighting. The base speed is so slow that it doesn't make action any harder to handle in practice.

that sounds like a good idea. i started kf1 recently and it seems like it just runs at a lower speed than its supposed to most of the time, because when theres no enemies around you can actually move reasonably fast, then when an AI is on screen it slows down to molasses again

yeah definitely, i dropped the game when i first tried it because i didnt know about this and the default choppy fps gave me motion sickness

      >what's the appeal?
It was made by the dark souls devs. That's it.

Wow crazy that someone discovered time travel and brought all the Dark Souls fans back in time to make King's Field successful enough for three sequels decades before Dark Souls came out!

      >what's the appeal?
Atmosphere. I know that sounds like buzzword shit but sometimes that's enough for people. I find the original King's Field to be relaxing and even meditative. Maybe similar to the way Minecraft makes zoomers feel.

It's fun mapping out the floors of the dungeons and killing the shit out of the monsters you find, also solving the puzzles on each floor and getting new tools.

It's not an action game. The combat is the least important part of the gameplay.

Weird, can't relate. I beat this game and thought it was a pain in the ass. Not fun.
I also beat Eternal Ring and at least that one was unique in some ways

I played it from HDD and beat it. Later I got my HDD corrupted because it turned the PS2 too soon. Sadly my KF:TAC save file was lost as well.

i've got a lot of respect for 2. despite the limitations, it's a true open game. you can make a b-line straight to the final boss. the only thing gate keeping you is one boss and the fact everything in the final areas will kill you in one hit. it also has a couple of areas where you could fall into and soft lock you if you don't have access to the warp items yet. gotta save often your first go round. as you say, it doesn't tolerate you fricking around.

The first ones are alright but a PS2 game with those prehistoric mechanics just feels backwards. Like they made it wrong on purpose, for a joke.

It was released 1 year after Eternal Ring, a PS2 launch title, using the same engine. Smart use of resources. They reused the engine again but modernized the controls and speed a bit in Shadow Tower Abyss.
