Every several months or so, I go on a bender playing about 5-10 until I bite off more than I can chew and burn out. I'm comfortable at 7.5 non-Kaizo, but I did 100% SM74 which taught me some of the more ridiculous mechanics like mid-air position shifting during wall kicks.
But I already do. Beyond The Cursed Mirror is by far the best one I've played so far.
Honestly I'd recommend any of the one's I've played so far except for Luigi's Mansion 64 and Remastered, they're just kaizo vanilla hacks of the regular game.
>what's wrong with luigi's mansion?
Like I said, it's just a bunch of kaizo edits to the vanilla game. Imagine Whomps Fortress, but it's night time, some platforms have been shifted/removed, and red coin placements are in bullshit positions.
I'm honestly surprised I put up with it for as long as I did, and without save states. I finally reached my bullshit threshold around Tick Tock Clock.
It was made during a different time, when the only mod tools that existed could only edit the existing levels instead of creating new ones.
I don't play rom hacks on console, but I DO use my original N64 controlller with an adapter so I can have a more authentic experience when emulating.
That being said, A lot of these rom hacks clearly aren't designed with the N64 controller in mind, so I have no idea why some rom hackers are autistic about their games running on console.
Any rom hack that actively uses the L button or the d-pad means I have to awkwardly switch my grip or bend my fingers over to the left side of the controller, making it harder to move around with the control stick and reach the Z trigger at the same time.
>so I have no idea why some rom hackers are autistic about their games running on console.
If all emulators are always becoming more accurate, working on console is the only way to ensure your hack is forever playable. Many older hacks on various platforms have issues in contemporary emulators for this reason. It's future proofing.
The real question is why hasn't the Mario 64 scene specifically moved onto native ports?
>If all emulators are always becoming more accurate, working on console is the only way to ensure your hack is forever playable. Many older hacks on various platforms have issues in contemporary emulators for this reason. It's future proofing.
Fair point. I usually have to spend extra time faffing about with emulator settings and switching retroarch cores entirely when playing some rom hacks. It's a pain in the ass. >The real question is why hasn't the Mario 64 scene specifically moved onto native ports?
I think it's just because the scene is too firmly rooted in what they already know how to do and don't want to bother learning how to mod the PC port. Some of the big names like Kaze have zero interest in the PC port.
It's a little disappointing to be honest. I'd love to see the full extent of what a rom hack could be like on the PC port.
1. The hack his fixes are for hasn't released and he's planning to release the fixes themselves with the hack.
2. That has practically nothing to do with people's lack of artistic talent for creating new textures.
ok but first tell me what hack this is
sm64 through the ages
This one is "Through The Ages," right?
I felt mixed on this one. It was good overall, but I found some of the levels to be meh.
Planet Namek alone was reason enough for me to play it though. Best level in the game by far.
still didn't get there, i like the babylon level the best so far. the wrecked ship one was horrible though
planet namek was awesome

Haven't tried those yet. I am about half way into 4.9. it feels at the level of it was any harder I think I would stop playing.

did you guys realize you both got a 38 and then a 95? what are the odds of that happening?
>Kaze "fixes" the games code
>its now uglier 100% of the time
>but muh 45fps on og hardware
Black person im playing this shit on a pc, grow up
you can have people dedicating their lives to make games for free and Ganker will still cry about it

Parasite.
Nothing Kaze has produced has ever been remotely good.
This, Last Impact, that shitty 3D World Clone, all garbage.
What rom hacks do you like anon?
when they get ported to sm64ex
never ever
Are there even any major overhauls for it yet? It's been like 3 years.
