A combination of the literal daily upkeep on moronic subsystems, Mythic+ grind to make sure your gear is always up-to-date for the raid, and all of the other knowledge accrued over years in order to most optimally handle content so as to not be yelled at (and thus have rights to yell at others for their failings), gigabytes of add-ons to effectively cheat your way through all content, and a collection of FOMO mounts, transmogs, and achievements to show off to others in order to constantly make you feel as if you have some degree of actual "achievement" the longer you stay in. There's loads of systems built to encourage toxicity and hostility among WoW players, but the most core of the issues is that all of those attributes basically turn into a dick-measuring contest where every single skin flake and hair follicle is measured against each other. The idea of committing to this for literally years straight and suddenly deciding to throw it all away can be extremely difficult for many.

How do people get addicted to WoW? The fundamental gameplay is so low in complexity and never changes from the start to level cap. 99% of the gameplay comes down to a basic DPs rotation and moving in or out of puddles. There's an infinity of actually good games out there you can play instead of this endlessly reskinned and repetitive drudgery.
A combination of the literal daily upkeep on moronic subsystems, Mythic+ grind to make sure your gear is always up-to-date for the raid, and all of the other knowledge accrued over years in order to most optimally handle content so as to not be yelled at (and thus have rights to yell at others for their failings), gigabytes of add-ons to effectively cheat your way through all content, and a collection of FOMO mounts, transmogs, and achievements to show off to others in order to constantly make you feel as if you have some degree of actual "achievement" the longer you stay in. There's loads of systems built to encourage toxicity and hostility among WoW players, but the most core of the issues is that all of those attributes basically turn into a dick-measuring contest where every single skin flake and hair follicle is measured against each other. The idea of committing to this for literally years straight and suddenly deciding to throw it all away can be extremely difficult for many.

it was fun because it was a literal race war with some humor to offset the grimdark war crimes you're constantly commiting on either side. It was also really refreshing to play after WC3 because you were literally a hero unit going into all the RTS buildings. Over time they lost their way though. Now it's about Marvel capeshit space scenarios in half-developed afterlives and troony dragons I guess, I gave up when during COVID they cut more content in a patch than they added. was a 17 yr sub but I stopped being their target audience, and very clearly communicated to me that they didn't want me playing their game anymore. It was quite insulting, really.

For some it's not really about fun, at least not the kind of fun you have playing Mario and jumping on platforms. I stuck with the game during BFA and SL despite them being massive downgrades compared to Legion (which was itself a mobile tier expansion) because it kept me busy dealing with shit in my life. It felt safe and "productive". Leveling, questing, dungeons, raids, battlegrounds, roleplaying, professions, mount collecting. Mindless "fun". I still think vanilla was the epitome of WoW and they should've just stopped there and made Warcraft 4 instead of TBC. We didn't know how good we had it.
