Based on the included clip it doesn't seem like much has changed. The game has a fun movement system and doesn't look too bad art wise but dumping it out in half a year just isn't great.

Polygons haven't been the core problem in frame drops for a while now. It has more to do with effects, particles, and general optimization in your programming these days.
Processing effects and loading unnecessary details to consume RAM. Polygons are only an issue if you're like rendering 3D Pixar grade animation models and sets.
Pseudo by default caps the fps around 23 in order to look more N64 like. That can be disabled in settings.

It's all right. I feel like the metroidvania part of it was the weakest part of it. The movement is great and a lot of the individual rooms are fun but the exploration and backtracking is boring because the map makes no sense and is full of identical looking rooms.

Started playing it last night. Main complaint is that the environments are bland. A better art direction would make it a lot better.
I know it's all about the movement, but a lot of the abilities are locked off until you pick up the ability. Don't hit me with that "but muh Metroid" either because the environments in Super Metroid were really nice and the music was awesome. And you could wall jump at the very beginning if you were good enough.
This is why I hate the term "metroidvania".
