It really should have. I think I wouldn't mind the weird restrictions on the original cast so much if they were just temporary guest characters like Richter, and that you had to engage in the monster collection if you wanted a full party.

Monster collection games only work when the game is designed entirely around it. Collecting monsters should be appealing and the collection aspect makes up for the lack of any real characterization. ToS2 has shitty monsters and it allows them to brush a beloved cast to the wayside. Nobody wanted that.
Story was ok, but the mage of the group had the most fun gameplay ever out of all the tales games. If you were good, you could solo anything in the game and she also had the coolest skill animations and highest dps.

Tales of Arise didn't come out when Ganker was 12 so they can't nostalgia over below average games like Tales of Abyss and Tales of Symphonia.
I paid for the collector's edition and got the platinum a couple of weeks after release.
It's fricking garbage. Quite possibly near the bottom of all the tales games I've played.
It's funny, noticing the way each type of fish tends to move seemed obvious from the start, so changing to the expected direction in advance made it almost effortless.
Dohalim was the only character that even approached a level of quality comparable to past Tales games. His social awkwardness and noble upbringing was both plot relevant and a funny quirk that made for good potential banter.
Unfortunately, the rest of the party are a bunch of wet noodles so he had nobody to bounce off of very much.
Shionne I think was done the most dirty. She just doesn't work too well as a tsundere character. She and Alphen are made for one another. I felt there was little chemistry between them and everything kind of rushed at the end. There should have been more interactions and development between them. It's like modern writers just don't know how to write romance anymore.
The story really fell off at the end of the game. Feels like they were planning on slowly introducing the main plot but were short on time/funding so they just rushed the ending without properly explaining a lot of stuff. Also it lacked typical weeb/e-girl characters, it was rather mid.
It has the sense that the game's plot underwent so many changes that it was no longer coherent in the finished product. The infodumps at the end of the game were just laughable. This is not the first time this kind of shitty story work has happened in a Tales game, but I think it may be the worst. You just aren't invested in the plot as it unfolds because it's all over the place.
I did for a while and combat just did not seem through-through at all. Animations were jank and locked you in while enemies would knock you out at all times. It felt like they never even playtested it.
Zestiria definitely had a lot of work and love put into it, but whoever was in charge of the writing implemented the effort in a pretty bad way. Combat's actually improved from Graces, but it also added some other features that made it feel worse unless you jump through a million hoops first.

Berseria would have arguably the best combat in the series if it wasn't for the fact that it's tied to the horrible elemental weakness system. On most difficulties it's not that important and you can ignore it but if you're playing on higher difficulties the stat inflation basically requires you to adhere to it which completely breaks the flow of the game.
When you beat Vholran for the first time, I thought to myself "wow, is this gonna be the first Tales game split into 2 games?" because the game was like 40+ hours long at that point and we'd only just finished 1 of the 3 planets...
Then they end up making the other 2 planets linear hallways which take 10 minutes to run through and rush the ending.
I played it up until what I assume is the final dungeon, but I just couldn't keep going. I've only played a few of the Tales games, but none of them was even remotely as boring as Arise.
Why can't Bamco hire competent translators, or even just a fricking QA division. This isn't so bad, but I remember Berseria's lategame script being a complete clusterfrick.
