The vast majority of remake fans would have been happy with whatever they got because they like the characters so much. And to be fair FF7 has a great cast. But when you look at the full range of FF7 media out there it's clear that quality is not important to its fans.

I've recently started playing FF3 again and it's very fun after beating 2. Final Fantasy 2 needed more tweaking, but the job system making an appearance is cool, it's fun to see where that began. I am going to play all the Final Fantasies in release order and try to examine the shift over time.
Final Fantasy 2 was still more fun than Remake, and it was during Remake that I realized I wanted to go back and was no longer interested in modern Final Fantasy. I don't see myself buying 16, Rebirth or 17 either unless they have a MAJOR course-correct for the latter.
I replayed and finished FF5 recently. You should try it, I'm sure you'd like it.
I'm looking forward to it! As mentioned I'm playing the games in release order, so I'll try 4 first and when I'm done with it I'll try 5. After that I'll be back in things I've played before up until 10 (which I never played, my home wasn't a PS2 home).

Squall is an okay MC given that he has a character arc (which is not a guarantee in FF) and that he's somewhat competently executed, but the rest is just so 2 dimensional or otherwise unintentionally unlikeable. Especially Rinoa and the way her and Squall's relationship was handled. Seriously, not only does Squall get emotionally manipulated and coerced by his friend group that he has known since childhood but that he temporarily forgot about due to otherwise completely plot irrelevant brain worms, they are also all completely schizophrenic in their opinions. One second they're calling Squall a monster when he wants to prioritize the Garden and all its inhabitants over Rinoa's safety during their battle against the other Garden (as he should as the de facto leader), the next they're calling him an incompetent clown because he's now consumed by his worries over Rinoa.

I did this last year. When you approach it with that frame of mind it's pretty interesting. Studying the growth and changes of a developer over time is genuinely fascinating and you'll start to appreciate a lot of little nuances of even the "bad" entries. Hope you have fun with it.

I think I know how you feel OP. For me Final Fantasy started to show its cracks after FFX. I dislike the changes and feeling they made to the remake compared to the OG. I haven't played rebirth yet since I am waiting for the PC release but will probably pirate it. Remake was good as a stand alone game but the tone is just way too different and they made too many stylistic changes which I dislike.
Oh well - remember you still have the original game which is still great.
I understand they likely focused on the PS5 version and took the exclusive deal because it might take six months anyways to port the game to pc but the separate release windows really killed my interest in the game because I know I'll still have to wait another couple months when it drops on PC because they'll go with epic exclusive instead of being a normal developer and releasing on steam.
I want to see the new Golden Saucer. I'm excited to frick around with some mini games. I like that shit. But trying to get hyped for the game is just a headache with this terrible fricking release format.

Rebirth is technically better but Remake didn't waste my time as much with unfun minigames when trying to do all side content. I was already really annoyed by the side content by the time I got to Cosmo Canyon, and the minigame you have to do for the protorelic there almost made me drop the game. I was actually seething mad.

On one hand, people define it as "making multiple movies all connected" as if this formula wasnt proved to be completely successful considering everything before endgame. Aside from the open-world filler, the mutliverse nonsense, and israeli financial practices of releasing one game as three, the remakes have very enjoyable and soothing atmospheres and I can't remember the last time a game has felt this innocent to me. Its such a breath of fresh air.

There was one turbo autist dedicated to ruining every one of the threads and who had multiple VPNs and Ganker passes and would quite literally spend 12+ hours a day on here doing basically what you see in this thread but in Remake threads.
This went on for literal years, to a point where the mods flat out said in IRC that they gave up and just let him do whatever he wants because it keeps it contained to just these threads and they can't actually do anything to stop him. They ranged banned half a goddamn continent to try to stop him and it still didn't work.

FFVII was an accidental masterpiece, Nomura and everyone else proved themselves to be hacks shortly after with the compilation titles. i moved on long ago and remaking always seemed like a fool's errand - how are you gonna get a reaction even remotely similar when aiming for the same audience that's now pushing 40? i already gave up on this franchise after 10. games are actually fine tho, fun to play and full of reverence for the original. lot of the padding and expanded lore can actually be considered an improvement. there's just way too fricking much of it and everything related to time frickery and the endings (especially rebirths) are really realy bad.
