It's popular and it's a gatcha. Being a gatcha is a massive negative. However, it's one of the few gatcha games where you can complete everything with just the free characters you get.
Beyond this, the vast majority of hate is just contrarians who never played it. And throw around all the same "anime sux" or "china bad" complaints. They don't know the actual faults of the game like the lackluster dialogue or the late game artifact grinding. Because they never played it.

As much as I also hope they just release it as a single player game later, it couldn't have gotten this far as a single player game. It's one of the most expensive games ever made and the only way they made their money back was with the whales. They would have never made $300 million in the first month selling it as a single release game. Let alone been able to make the six other regions + endless characters.

It would have been four regions with a dozen playable characters, one region with 4 new characters as part of a SEASON PASS. Even if the content is similar and shallow, you don't get this much content with normal videogame monetization.

The first 20 hours as you explore the world are actually enjoyable because the game has good art direction and music. However eventually you will have to make use of the artifact system which is a horrible multi-layered RNG grindfest. At about AR45 the average mobs become such HP sponges that the game will be very tedious if you dont have good artifact sets.

The music changes a lot from region to region. Not just the instruments but the actual tone and composition. Something you probably can't tell because you just pass it off as "all the same Hollywood stuff." Which again, is a dumb assessment. Even within Hollywood, there isn't some universal type of music. John Williams doesn't sound anything like James Horner. And most modern Hollywood music doesn't sound like the good stuff from the 1980s.

Maybe the combination of it being upbeat and obviously written by someone from that culture. But it is surprising how upbeat and up tempo the music in Liyue is. Ganker doesn't play games, and a good chunk of the few ones that do are bad at vidyas to the point that they don't mind the stagnated endgame with worse return every patch. Realistically speaking we should in the very least have more floors for a better return on abyss but we've been getting the same return for nearly two years despite some abyss lineups requiring 5 times the investment from years ago.

F2P here, at AR24 and just started attempting Dragonspine (some NPC mentioned it was the most dangerous place in Monstadt so I saved it until I finished the rest of the overworld). The fight with the three Ruin Guards was absolutely brutal for me. Basically a several minute long all out brawl that I got through with liberal spamming of healing items.

The game was like this for me until I started getting and leveling specific artifact sets rather than just what the game was giving me. It was artificial difficulty but I kind of miss being so weak relative to the world.

It had one of the best areas in RPGs in ages with the fog island though. The completely optional quests with no logs, instructions or handholding whatsoever that you have to complete by pure game world knowledge, reading texts and talking to NPCs there and some intuition. I was enjoying it as a new player, but now i'm getting bored already. I got a new character who i want to use as my main, but the ascension materials can only be obtained further into the story. I don't want to waste exp/upgrade shit on my current team, which is becoming underpowered. So now i'm just spamming the story quests just to unlock a specific region
I've just started playing recently but noticed you need 6 months of daillies to have a 50% chance to win a 5* character. 1 year of daillies to have a 100% chance, seems pretty hard to me, although I don't mind just using the free characters if I can clear the contents with them.
you'll also get a good chunk of primos from small and large events constantly being rolled out and since you're new the vast majority of treasure chests you open will also get you primos for rolling
The hardest parts would be probably be the abyss and higher rewards from some events but I think most just get the primogems and stop. You'll see numerous people do it too, myself included. Get enough points for the primogems and ignore the higher shit because it's usually only mora or something.

I've been playing since the second banner after release (October 2020, klee first run). I have 22 5*s (weapons and characters combined) without spending a single cent on the game. That comes out to exactly 1 5* per month average. I also have enough saved to get 2 more, so it's actually more than 1 per month.

The level up process is fun, the world is packed with stuff to do... but then you run out of things to do and the only content is either abyss or waiting for the next map addition.
And that's not getting on the actual gacha that is getting new characters or the -limited- farming you have to do to actually have a competent team.
Also there are certain aspects of the game design that make it downright hostile to new players, like having to clear up to a certain point to even be able to level up some characters past 40.
It's very fun for the first 30 hours or so. Very much worth playing. Once you hit AR 35 or so, everything becomes a damage sponge.
Gameplay and the world are great. Music is lovely, especially the Monstadt and Liyue exploitation music.
Story is a bit boring. Characters are anime stereotypes, but not too grating. They are very shameless about the anime pedo shit, however.

Emblem doesn't actually give you more damage unless you have a lot of ER, and even then it's only more damage compared to 2+2 with that amount of ER(at which point you traded ER for dmg). That set is a bit of a noob trap for her unless you need a ton of ER and want to stack it.
Emblem is more damage at roughly +60% ER, which isn't all that much considering that's including the 20% from the emblem 2p.
Some quick napkin math. Assume 35k HP before 2p, hydro goblet is your only source of % damage. Burst accounting for about 80% of Yelan's damage
2p millelith adds 8.25% to your total damage
2p HoD adds 10.23% to your total damage (these two multiply, so the total is +19.32%)
4p Emblem (with +60%) adds 21.83%
Note that this doesn't account for the direct benefit to having more ER. That's much more difficult to quantify. While you CAN play Yelan (at least C1) with low ER, having more ER certainly helps her damage noticeably.
Well you don't have 60% EE and if you hit multiple targets with your AOE stuff your 80% burst figure falls off. And it's a bit less than 80% even at 160%, even in single target scenarios.
Just depends what teams you use her in. If you have Xingqiu or Raiden her ER is solved even if you have like under 130%.
In single target scenarios, her burst should be doing 9.26*3*16 %hp damage for every 40.7*2 %hp damage her skill does. That's 444.48 for every 81.4, or about 81.7% of her damage.
16 notably comes from using her skill twice after burst, plus 14 triggers of her burst (in 15 seconds) on attacks, on the assumption that her burst is charged (with help from other characters) after every 2 uses of E. It still comes out to over 80% if you only get 13 triggers.

Breakthrough Barbs should be ignored. They are useful situationally to kill low-HP enemies at a distance, but they are not part of Yelan's rotation outside of C6. If you have C6, by all means please use something other than Emblem because those barbs can be SIGNIFICANT.
For some reason they are only calculating 12 total waves to Exquisite throw. I might accept that as a more realistic estimate for her attack-generated waves, but you need to add at least 2 more for using her C1 skill twice (burst-attack-skill-attack-skill, swap character)

looks like Kazuha and Aqua, and I think 12 waves makes sense considering burst animations and other factors, 15 isn't realistic
12 waves from attacks alone makes sense. You get an extra 2 "free" waves if you use her elemental skill during burst twice. Those 2 don't count against the normal cooldown.
I've been trying to get the calculator to show the Emblem damage, but it isn't calculating the Burst DMG properly. Aqua doesn't grant Hydro Damage, the correct 20% from is applied as "DMG%" already.
Maybe it fricked up with Xingqiu, he does a res shred instead of dmg I think.

It's better to use Yelans skill after her burst for pretty much the same reason it's better to use Xingqiu's skill after his burst. Given that you need to use that skill anyway, you get an additional benefit for using it after rather than before. In Yelan's case, every time you use her E and hit an enemy during burst, her burst fires an EXTRA set of projectiles, no cooldown.
It also works really well to do so with Hu Tao, because that slight delay means that Hu Tao is getting more benefit from the increasing damage mod from Yelan's burst. Otherwise Hu Tao's skill ends long before Yelan's Burst, so when that damage multiplier is at its highest you aren't using it.

With weapons it's worse, I had to buy the red crit spear for Raiden with glitter and she still feels mediocre, everyone else has to use 3* weapons because my weapon drops have been absolute shit.
I managed to get sacrificial on XQ at least.

Actually yes. You can just run around and explore, then stop whenever you want. It's suggested you just explore the areas and then quit until another area gets released. Only reason to keep playing at any specific time is if you want a specific character. And you don't even need them. You can finish the content in the game with just the characters you get for free.

Your first few hours are the most enjoyable because it's only fun when you're exploring new areas.
The story, characters and combat are mind-numbing boring.
Primogems/fates are frontloaded so your enjoyment will likely decrease once they dry up and the honeymoon phase is over.
And the game legitimately become a chore when you've caught up to the current quests because all there is left to do is minmax your characters in a system that deliberately stunts your progress

Gacha is the system of rolling for characters/items. Not a gameplay system. You can have a gacha with turn based combat, action combat or even fricking card based combat. Hell, there's a bomberman gacha.

It's a gacha game, it doesn't matter if it's entirely singleplayer or not and if the content doesn't require you to spend money. You have a ton of systems built around getting Primos, at least some of the content encourages characters from the latest pulls (It's mainly the Spiral Abyss but still), you can't obtain skins without paying money for a Welkin or directly, the Battle Pass locks weapons behind spending money, a lot of 3* to 5* weapons are only from the paid banner and you just barely get anything decent freely to encourage pulling, every single character post-launch is locked to rolling even if you can roll them for free, and so on.
Just because you can get stuff for free and can clear everything without doing a single pull doesn't stop it from being a gacha.
Gacha games revolve strictly around gacha mechanics, Genshin doesn't. Every single thing you just implied make up the bulk of Genshin only actually make up a small fraction of it.

They do not. Gacha games don't have to be wholly restrictive and force you to pull to be considered a "gacha game". The very fact that many systems revolve around giving you Primos, timegating you, or forcing you to interact with the Wish mechanic puts it as a "gacha game". Just because Genshin doesn't have a power creep doesn't suddenly make the Wish menu disappear. Just because you can clear most stuff with the base 4*s you get with no pulls doesn't somehow ignore the fact that you have every single reward in the game being dedicated to giving you only Primos with like one or two giving you maybe a weapon if you're a good boy and a character if you're a really good boy which you can't account for.
What exactly do you consider a "gacha game"? Something that has a power creep and relies on you pulling? Just because you can ignore a lot of the systems in Genshin doesn't mean it's not built around those systems. At some point you're going to interact with the Wish system to get pulls and characters. At some point you're going to have to deal with timegated resin to upgrade your characters.
There is no other reason to play gacha "games" other than to pull. That isn't true for Genshin.

Xiangling is pretty tame all things considered, she just makes food out of strange ingredients. Bennet being super unlucky and Itto being a mental case feel different than her.

The game is fine is you play just for the main story content and a few side quests. Don't overload yourself with all the gacha mechanics. The game is 100% playable with the free characters it hands you.
The secret of the shitty gacha is to "roll for you who like" There's enough leaks to tell you who is upcoming so you can save your currency for. Don't go into the expectation that you can get everyone. You don't need everyone. Hell three of the best characters are low rarity.
Once you accept this, Genshin becomes infinitely more enjoyable to play. My main gripe is unskippable cutscenes and dialog. It's why I don't bother with most sidequests.

If anything, Genshin is a gacha that breaks the gacha model. As you can play the whole thing and never spend a dime on any characters or artifacts. It's as if the developers are trolling the whales and going "thanks for funding the development of this overpriced game." And the rest of us basically get to play that overbudget game for free.
Now, if you want to argue that just by the virtue of it having gacha, it's encouraging other developers to follow their model. Sure, maybe you might have a point. But Genshin is not the first game to do gacha. It is itself a follower of a model other games pioneered. And again, it used that model to create a game that wouldn't have been able to be made otherwise. This isn't some low budget 2D game which is raking in tons of gacha money. It's one of the most expensive games ever made. And without the mechanics to force you to spend money like those cheaper games do.

Most of those "deep" PS2 games you're referencing also have repetative systems. They either mask them a little better or you like the systems so you cut them slack. My favorite game of all time is Dragon Quest VIII. But really, if you want to break it down, you're doing the same 3-4 things in each area. Same with GTA. Or God of War. Or Okami. Or Resident Evil 4. Or any PS2 game you can name. And PS3 and PS4 game for that matter. All games can be watered down to "doing the same few things over and over."

He's really fun. My crit rate/dmg is only 67/161 which seems smaller than what I've seen people showcase him with. I don't think I'd be getting better rolls on artifacts than what I already have. Since I had plenty of left over primos I did try rolling for his sword but only up to one 5 star. Figured might as well give it a shot. I still have 10k left and the Whiteblind seems to be just fine. It's stuck at level 4 however because frick me the game just gives me every other weapon besides the ones I want at any given time frick you let me change all these goddamn bows into greatswords.
