That’s why I stopped DM’ing. I’d rather just talk with my friends if they’re gonna ignore the game.

Its not that they ignore the game. They're going about that, they just spend forever deliberating about simple things.
      >"Oh shoot guys I gotta take a shit. Should I wipe my ass?"
      >cue 5 minute discussion between them about whether or not the player should wipe his ass or not

You should honestly just be a player and stop dming if you have no patience. If you don't want your players to actually discuss and communicate what they're about to do and talk with their group then you're a shit dm who would rather railroad everything.

Not OP but I can get where he is coming from. My players try to come up with overcomplicated plans for the most simple things. For example
          >the bad guy is in a cave with several of his underlings
          >the party can ambush the enemy and wreak havoc on them
          >instead they come up with the idea of creating a fire near the mouth of the cave and basically gassing the enemy
          >what should have been an epic fight to end the quest with turns into the party gathering branches and wood to create a large fire with

I legitimately don't see the issue here. They're playing smart.

            Anonymous

That's not bad, but you have to realize that those clever plans can't be just 1 step. Smoking them out of the cave would work, but then you'll have enemies coming out of the cave ready for a fight (though they might have to adjust to sunlight, depending on time of day).

The players would then have to prepare a clever ambush to take advantage of the situation or else face a more standard fight.

              This.
Instead of engaging the enemy one room at a time, everyone in the cave comes out all at once (or perhaps [x] enemies run out at the start of each turn).
The upsides being that the enemies are debuffed by smoke inhalation and being flashbanged by the sun.

I mean, that was also my first thought when I read "bad guy is in a cave with several of his underlings"
Pro-tip: if you give players the opportunity to commit war crimes, they will commit war crimes.

war crimes in medieval fantasy would be anachronism because war crimes were not invented until first Geneva conference

                >Following a rebellion by towns of the Upper Rhine against his tyranny, Hagenbach was put on trial for the atrocities committed during the occupation of Breisach. His trial, which was held by an ad hoc tribunal of the Holy Roman Empire in 1474 was the first “international” recognition of commanders’ obligations to act lawfully.[1][2] He was convicted of crimes, specifically murder, war rape, and perjury, among other crimes, that "he as a knight was deemed to have a duty to prevent." He defended himself by arguing that he was only following orders from the Duke of Burgundy, to whom the Holy Roman Empire had given Breisach.[1][3] The ad hoc tribunal, however, refused to accept this as a defense. Peter von Hagenbach was found guilty of murder, rape, and perjury, and was beheaded at Breisach

You can't have a meaningful campaign if strict time records are not kept.
And pausing mid-combat for meta discussion is not strict time keeping.

If you're keeping time down to the seconds/minutes of combat taking place, that's just pedantic. The exception being if whatever the goal is is time sensitive.

The absolute primary reason why combats take too long is player indecisiviness

                Anonymous

You're a fricking moron. During combat and exploration, time is broken up into rounds and turns. Combat rounds are 10 seconds each. Exploration turns are 10 minutes each. Every exploration turn, you roll to see if wandering monsters show up. This is meant to pressure the players and reinforce that the dungeon is dangerous and helps things feel real. If you do not keep strict time records, the campaign becomes meaningless as the illusion fades.

You can be social, but spending 10 minutes discussing someone else's turn is not fun for anyone. It's essentially always metagaming, out of character shit. Just do what you think in the moment, this is supposed to be happening in no time at all, you don't have minutes to discuss your plans. It's called being courteous to other players.

I’m a player and my group has the same problem. They’ll spend 15-20 minutes setting up for something or debating something stupid 3-4 times a night. Half the time the only reason they stop is that myself or another player just do something stupid to set off the encounter just to get things moving.

It’s all fricking pointless anyway because we’re being railroaded and nobody has ever died.

I would say install a time limit for turns if it's that much of a issue. I know it's a turn based game, but some pressure can make things more fun.

Once I sat there and didn't say anything about starting the session to see for how long they'd go. After almost 2 hours one of them pointed out that we hadn't started playing yet, to which I said we wouldn't because I didn't feel like GMing for barely an hour, and told them that if this happens again I would drop the campaign as I got the feeling they were not interested in playing. It happened again, and I dropped the campaign, to which they apologized a lot but I din't back on my words.
Didn't happen again except another time they started talking but after 30 minutes one of them suddenly realizes, warns the others and quickly prepare to play again.
Note that these were all off topic discussions, not roleplay.

Roleplay is okay because it's always fun to see and if I think you're taking too long I either have an NPC show up and redirect the atention towards the game without stopping roleplaying or, if it's a dungeon or somewhere dangerous, I make a roll for a pseudo-encounter table. So they are're free to roleplay as much as they want as long as they realize the risks of it.

You're the fricker who is always saying, in every combat,
      >i peek around the corner, fire and arrow, and then go back into perfect cover
And then I have to explain that this is a game, combat is abstracted, and the characters are not literally taking turns shooting at each other

        >i peek around the corner, fire and arrow, and then go back into perfect cover
This is perfectly fine, though. If you're playing any functional system, enemies would just ready actions for when you exit cover to attack them.
