Playing Civ 4 for the first time with a history in Civ 5
How do you actually play this one if you want to do anything other than science or domination? Culture looks so barebones compared to 5 and well diplomacy has always been shit but 5 was at least tolerable.

Diplo in 6 is atrocious with the fricking currencies and downgraded world congress. I thought 5 was fine.

Within the realm of good game design sure. I play Civ to build a civilisation, not exploit and cheat my way to victory, though I think there is a certain civilisation that does do that.

I bet this is why they deleted tech trading in 5 and onward, I like how they actually tried to make diplomacy work in civ6, they failed but at least it made sense on the concept stage compared to what said, about how winning harder difficulty in older civs is just a clown fiesta of abusing the game to a point you may as well just cheat

like selling your diplo favor each turn in civ 6, it trivializes everything and makes you feel cheap, yet you have to do it or you lose
deity in both 4 and 6 seems to be more about how much can you exploit the system rather than visualize a deep strategy
personally i stick to emperor, or immortal if i really feel like microing the shit out of everything

Obviously not that moron, but as a Pole, I'd like to correct that there is no such thing as Polish civilization - there is however Polish culture. Frick-huge difference, especially in Polish. And the fact Poland was only finally added to Civ in 5 is kind of a disgrace for Polish Civ community, the all 82 of us that is.

I usually play Civ 4 for a while then give up when I see the AI players can have their army numbers just skyrocket and build sprawling developed empires fast while if I try to do that my economy crashes and I can't keep up
It ain't really fun when an AI player just puts like 100 units on your border
i played 3 to 6, and honestly 6 aint so bad. gameplay wise, there are a lot of things to entertain you

AI is literally fricking braindead, for one
Civ bonuses range from overpowered to situational to worthless. I mean, this thing has existed since Civ 4 with the Incas having 2 extra leader traits from UB and UU, but 6 takes the cake and snorts it like cocaine.
That's because adding bloat is easier than making vanilla AI capable of using them.

what's amazing to me is that the AI lacks the most BASIC, FUNDAMENTAL diplomatic reasoning
Someone at firaxis saw that you can sell your diplo favors and strategics to AI every turn to literally keep them in a state of 0 gold for 200 turns in a row and thought to themselves: "yep, this works as intended"
Then the latest patch made the AI heavily emphasize campuses at the expense of everything else - the AI for example will rarely if ever build commercial hubs LMAO
All the """difficulty"" (I'm talking deity here) boils down to surviving first 50 turns due to AI's artificially crude advantage and then there's no way for you to lose if you have at least a modicum of an idea as to what you are doing
The game's a fricking joke and anyone taking it seriously is a joke
or just set the timescale to marathon and watch it telegraph every fricking move because it was never adjusted outside of regular ass vainilla settings
AI is really bad and Firaxis refuses to release the dll files like they did for previous entries that are needed for proper AI fix mods. The game is also completely pozzed

I will admit that Civ 4's diplo is somewhat straightforward and uninteresting. But this comes in exchange of it being being intelligible. Civ 5's diplo is frustrating because its AI diplo is inscrutable. With Civ 4 you know exactly what is contributing and what detracting from your relations with other leaders as well as exactly where you stand, so it works fine.
what is culture victory, beeline specific techs to build specific wonders.
