Why can't new open world games have this much content? I don't care about ultra realistic 4k graphics when it's a 200gb of unoptimized slop with cookie cutter story and empty map that was a decade in development and needs NASA machine to power up

New Vegas is the last great FPS/RPG hybrid and also one of the very few open world games worth a shit, the game engine was mostly untouched from F3 so they focused on building a quality title that deserves the Fallout name.

It’s crazy that a half finished game ended up so good, but in fairness the engine was complete from 3 so the just focused on quality writing and content

The same engine that was complete from Oblivion >inb4 had to make pew pew mechanics

Besides, these days there are only a handful of engines that are used most often. It factors in, but means nothing without talent.

Now that you mention it, I don't know why they didn't add bows and arrows in Fallout. It is the go to primitive survival weapon. I know NV added spears and tomahawks but still no bows and arrows

It looks like ass, none of the mechanics are explained, it barely fricking works on modern hardware, none of the people you meet in the first 2 hours (which is how long I could stand this game) are interesting. As a pre-requisite you have to like Bethesda games first(atleast the old ones). New Vegas is simply the best RPG Bethesda game(not made by bethesda). If you don't like Bethesda games, but like RPGs, you'll probably hate NV.

        Anonymous

this is a fairly accurate statement

i loved fallout 3, even moved to DC area because of it. was neat walking around the mall i'd only known destroyed in 2277. years before that i loved morrowind. story rich first person RPGs with a strong loot/level-up drive. new vegas is the same way. it does seem a step down graphically from FO3 somehow, probably because xboxes were dropping like flies catching red ring around that time.

I tried so many times to get into this game but I just don't like it. It looks like ass, none of the mechanics are explained, it barely fricking works on modern hardware, none of the people you meet in the first 2 hours (which is how long I could stand this game) are interesting. This should be right up my alley but I just hate every second of it.

its pretty great. i will agree with you the start of the game is a filter. you're given free rein to wander into deathclaw territory right near the start, or just wander around the roads until you begin to put the pieces together. you'll find a lot of stuff out in the waste that doesn't make sense until you find its complementary component that gives you the exposition about it somewhere else. the writing is good though, and the political game later between you and the factions and your reputation based on own behaviors is top notch. i mustve played it 20 times in the past decade, always unpatched and unmodded via steam. currently on windows 10. give it another shot anon.

It's probably environment work. Aesthetically appealing environmental layout is the one thing Bethesda has unironically be pretty good at for a long time (although I dunno how that worked out in Starfield) and one of the weaker parts of FNV. Yes, this does lead some Bethesda environments to look cartoony if you think about it too long (Megaton being one prime example) but they still tend to look better than your average NV settlement, which is literally just a small subdivision plopped onto a desert.

New Vegas' physical environment is probably the weakest aspect of it, especially with how tech limitations required them to split areas like the Strip and the casinos into a bajillion loading screens which makes them a pain in the dick to navigate.

              >which is literally just a small subdivision plopped onto a desert.
I mean, that's exactly what nevada is like

It is. But it isn't visually interesting. It also leans into the other problem of everyone living in 200 year old pine frame houses that look like they'll give you lung cancer due to mold issues.

NV would have unironically benefitted from leaning into the western theme even harder. Adobe buildings, pop up trade towns a la Armadillo from Red Dead made from cheap, all-timber construction, new construction alongside pre-war stuff. Of course this would cost additional resources that they probably didn't have, so I understand why they just copy-pasted the house and shack assets from FO3 for the bulk of their smaller towns or one-off homesteads. But it doesn't change the fact that most of New Vegas' environments are bland and kinda by-the-numbers.

I also want to reiterate that separating so much of the Strip into different loading screens fricking kills the pacing/navigation there. Doing anything in Gomorrah is a massive pain in the ass even today. I can't imagine what it would be like with the original loading times.

                >I also want to reiterate that separating so much of the Strip into different loading screens fricking kills the pacing/navigation there.

The game engine wouldn't have ran on xbox360/ps3 any other way. It's why the entire DC ruin in 3 is just connected by metro tunnel loading screens.

They had Van Buren's design doc to build upon for the world-building and story content, not to mention the existing Fallout 3 assets they could use. Still impressive either way because even with those resources at hand, developers could still be unfocused on what to do and they didn't.

It's worthwhile if you enjoy the game. You find interesting places, new characters, new background lore, loot, unique weapons, etc

      >New Vegas locks like 99% shit behind the main quest that it's entirely pointless to explore outside of a few designated 'side' areas
Wut? Are you saying because an area isn't important to the main quest that it somehow, in your mind, becomes 'locked'? And 99% seems a massive overestimation

Also if that's not what you were saying and you meant that 99% of content is locked behind the main quest you are straight up wrong. The Fort and Legate's Camp are the only locations locked behind main quest progression.

the best thing with new vegas is that it offers a chance for you to truly role-play since your character has no defined background. in all the other fallout games you are confined by the fact that you're either a vault dwelller or a tribal.

for example why would your fallout 2 tribal have science or energy weapons as a tag skill? why would you as a 19 year old vault dweller start going in a completely different direction and explore dangerous ruins in fallout 3?

Reminder that Mr. House is the best overall option

    >NCR
is a typical corrupt bureaucracy that taxes people for little in return and rewards the most corrupt and cutthroat politicians. They’re a copy paste of our current system and something new should be tried

    >Legion
Once Caesar dies that’s it. Granted, you give him more time if you remove the tumor but nonetheless they’ll stretch themselves thin if they conquer the West and be plagued by infighting once Caesar dies. Within 20 years the Legion will be all but dismantled save for some remnant factions who are essentially raider groups

    >Yes Man
    Meme

House is the most unique of the options and something that hasn’t been tried yet: a technological stronghold in the middle of the wastes that is pushing forward to bring humanity a better future. It will be an autocratic dictatorship and he’ll deal with dissidents harshly though, so he’s not perfect.

Also, Mr Bear-and-Bull is already a black legion guy, we don't need 2, it'd be racist

new vegas was also unplayable at launch with shit ton of bugs. Let not pretend most of the asset is not recycled from Fallout 3 so most of the hard work has already been done.

    fallout 1
    >you are on your own pretty much, you need a water chip to get water for your vault
    >endgame threat is threat to your vault, simple ending boss
    fallout 2
    >expanded map expanded weapons, ok sounds good but heres a bunch of bullshit dialogue, jokes, faction bullshit slowly crept in, cult game for oldgays
    fallout 3
    >bunch of shit thrown together, ignore worthy story but doesn't matter anyways its ok to explore instead
    new vegas
    >more faction bullshit, fallout 2 cancer taken to next level
    4
    >even more faction bullshit, its fallout 3 but not fallout 3, its new vegas faction shit halfassed even more from new vegas halfassing 2 concepts

game is overrated and was just the next game in trashing series goodwill. 76 atleast fixed some things.

And right away the new vegas internet defense force responds as soon as you critique their holy grail. Fallout 4 had perfect setup in its route to get to diamond city, and hunt down kellogg only to shit the bed as soon as you are forced into faction war hero larping. People remember the DLC far harbor far and nuka world more then the core game cause the core game past kellogg was trash trying to be new vegas all over again. The series was never meant to be self insert general of some big group and build a story. New vegas defenders holding the game up so high compared to the rest of the series are midwits in their own fantasy.

I never had much technical issues with NV, 3 on the other hand was an unstable mess, even on Win7

Considering like 90% of the assets were from FO3 this shouldn't be surprising.
