I think if you were a KOTOR or Final Fantasy fan desperate for a new game, it would maybe make sense that you'd want to play SWTOR or FFXIV solo. Otherwise I don't get it.

runegamers were definitely the most unhinged. I had an autist follow me around for weeks, even when I world hopped just because I "crashed" their spot for 10 seconds

the solo MMO player phenomenon tells me that there's actually a huge untapped market out there. lots of people want to run around a huge world and do simple quests with simple combat so their numbers can go up, and to have occasional minor interactions with other players.
basically, they want something like elden ring but with MMO combat.

Actually, they just want Elden Ring. Because it sold like crazy andalmost all of them played it.

World to explore, stuff to collect, stuff to farm all with extremely low effort. Can easily be done while watching TV. It's just comfy.

It's a grindan gaem with active content updates and potentially years of stuff to keep coming back to after a break.
Not that difficult to understand, the subset of gamers gaming just to spend their time or multitask with has always been huge. Basically

I used to play MMOs to break out of my shell and be less shy, but modern MMOs are totally silent. It's kind of sad.

I want to play in an environment that feels like a living world. Knowing that most players that run around are actual humans (or "humans") makes it more fun for me.

i once spent 3 literal hours clearing a boss (we needed like 30 people, there was a lot of preparation involved), but got disconnected when i was about to loot, and then when i got back i found that they had just disbanded the party with no care in the world. that's not way to live.

This is actually fine, but it should also be possible to still do solo in some capacity. Like a portion of the activity is doable alone for a smaller amount of but the same rewards as a group.

The problem with group focused MMOs is.... well you're forced to find and rely on a group. None of them really have good pick-up content (WoW m+ is alright but you can still end up with some boostie who doesn't know mechanics and wipes your key). Outside of raid night you're pretty much locked to doing boring maintenance stuff like dailies/farming supplies. Meanwhile a "solo" mmo like Old School Runescape you can do almost anything solo OR with a group. You can still have raid nights with your buddies but their night won't be ruined if you can't make it, and if you wanna hop on at 4am to do some ToA by yourself you can.

If you don't have a friend cadre at the ready when you start, the appeal is not playing with the other people playing that game.
MMOs have the absolutely worst fricking people on them. And you never see it right away. Curb appeal is usually positive, and you only start finding the mold, rot, termites, and spontaneous autistic rage problems later on when it's more awkward to tell them to frick off.

he should play conan exiles on a pve-c server where people cant blow up your house. survival type pvp games are the only actually good pvp games that are somewhat mmos.
    >holy heckarinos anon those arent mmos because they dont have 1000000 players per server
ya sure homosexual and wows 10 v 10 battlegrounds are the height of mmo pvp right? or that 40v40 battleground where the meta strat is to avoid pvp as much as possible and kill the pve boss?

So what IS the best solo MMO

      Anonymous

It would be something that is actual skill-based as opposed to being tick-based or rotation-based. WoW or any game like it is solo-unfriendly, since you're not going to do the majority of content alone. FF14 is in the same boat and requires you to join groups to get through story. MMOs with iframes or parry systems are the best candidates, as those enable players to punch far above their grade. In those games, highly-skilled players can solo anything provided there isn't a strict time limit for finishing a fight, but games like NGS scale enemy HP down when you are solo, so everything there is completable alone (for good players). SW:TOR is about 99% story content with companions to fill in for missing players. You can also buy contracts with mercenary npcs in Dungeons & Dragons Online to ensure you have a full party.

Others have said it but it's nice to see other people playing the same game you are, and you can want or enjoy that level of multiplayer without wanting to explicitly team up or make friends in game.
It's like the equivalent of passing someone on the street and saying morning or nodding, it's nice little bits of human contact that don't require anything deeper.

    >what’s the appeal?
Zoomers are incapable of being alone, or doing literally anything unless their actions are validated by other people; this is a direct result of having spent your entire life on social media. Ironically, despite it being called SOCIAL media, they’re also entirely incapable of socialising, almost like they’ve all been intentionally programmed to be full-time professional spergs. So now you have an entire generation and a half of dysgenic broccoli-haired freaks that are so intrinsically narcissistic that they NEED an audience to validate their entire existence and/or actions, and they’re all waving around their wallets screaming at the top of their lungs demanding companies and brands “solve” their crushing loneliness and complete inability to act in any way, shape, or form: HUMAN. Welcome to the fricking singularity, my friend, crazy to think it never had anything to do with AI and everything to do with permanently mind breaking kids lol.
    >hey guise iz dis game “””WORTH IT”””
    >says the zoomer knowing full well it’s unable to communicate with any of the other players they “share” the in-game space with.

Narcissism all the way down. Who would’ve thought social media would be so detrime-
