Playing SMT3 for the first time since the PS2 days. Back then I did a magic build and I'm considering doing a strength build this time. Is strength viable? Or should I just stick to magic?

Strength is better than magic in Nocturne

physical builds are always better than magic in mainline games.
it makes sense in SMT 1 and 2 but in Nocturne, 4 and 5 it makes no sense and is handwaved away by moronic otherwise useless third party mechanics.

In 5 you are literally a demon, you even run off Mag, why wouldn't it make sense for you to use Magic? 4 is the only nonsense excuse

Magic is pretty good in V.

no, magic is absolute garbage all the way through compared to phys

How does it not make sense? You trade the ability to get press turns for most of the game until endgame comes and bosses with no weaknesses roll in and strength builds overtake magic

          >phys crits don't give press turns
          >phys crits aren't easier to get than mag press turns

            >no, magic is absolute garbage all the way through compared to phys
I only played it through once and magic was fine. Beat the best ending with it too. Only real disadvantage for magic I would say is the lack of spell slots since 4 of your spell slots are already reserved for Nahobino only magic spells. 1 for concentrate. 2 for heat riser and debiliate. Which leaves you with one spare spell slot which I used Mediarahan with it.

FPBP because it's true. Magic is good for most of the game but gets worse later on. Get pierce and phys gets really really good.

Nocturne's stats are all kinds of fricked, making STR/VIT builds much better than MAG builds by endgame.

(Of course, it's still a good idea to invest into a little MAG for the stat doors in the Labyrinth of Amala and to make Magma Axis good)

Also not mentioned is the fact that Focus exists for Strength in Nocturne but there is no Concentrate for Magic

Strength and Vit are king HOWEVER the optimal path has you put a couple of points into MAG because you get Tornado extremely early and it shreds bosses. After you hit level 30 the wonky level scaling starts weakening magic but right at that point you get Divine Shot that can carry you all the way to the endgame if you pump STR. I'd get MAG to 10.

      >that point you get Divine Shot that can carry you all the way to the endgame
It's funny how much of a joke the game, becomes once you get that skill.

Strength is significantly better than magic in Nocturne.
The only bad part of Strength is all the best strength skills are backloaded.
You'll be stuck focus+lunging until you get to Asakusa (I think?) and then you can get divine fist.

deadly fury doesn't invalidate every encounter without a rangda like deathbound does.
arguably better than freikugel on single targets too.

Strength is king because of pierce if you're going to do all the content. You will literally just sit in the background doing jackshit for the final boss if you aren't a strength build. You don't need tornado. The only problem is you will spend a lot of the game just auto attacking since you'll just have access to low-hit rate moves. The auto attack is pretty good though and later on you can build for hit-all auto-attacks that heal you to grind a bit. Luck does nothing and agility does almost nothing. If you can't hurt the enemy with auto attacks then you can just be the buff/debuffer guy.

2:2:1 vit:str:agi to 30 each, then mag, then luck. There's some early game vit scaling moves though so you could actually do 3:1:1 if you wanted to which might actually be bettle for the little bit of extra HP you get. Mag doesn't give you mag defense in this game.

Also drain spells on your fiends are absurdly good. It doesn't take long to drain all the mana from bosses.

No? I don't remember anything like that. Maybe you're referring to the fact that the OST is still compressed.

The music tracks are compressed but that doesn't actually translate to worse audio quality. They've done blind tests and proven even self-described audiophiles can't hear the difference.

            Anonymous

You have a link to those blind tests? You don't have to be an audiophile to notice a difference between the original and uncompressed audio

These "uncompressed" versions are just complete remakes of the sounds and have some pretty glaring flaws themselves https://youtu.be/9aEk_6LdKug?t=141

Audio's the same as the PS2 release. The actual issue is that the PS2 version had compressed audio to begin with (except for the tracks that are from the Maniax release like Dante's theme or Lucifer's theme) so the Remaster is just 1:1 in that aspect

This version comes standard with everything people usually mod for

      Anonymous

That was on-release shitposting, the port's perfectly fine (except on switch it has some fps drops sometimes as usual with that console).

      Anonymous

Not a mod, but I set the internal render resolution to 8k to improve some of the textures (like the markings on Demifiend's body). I just followed this guide: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2494134877
That change didn't seem to affect performance at all, but I think you have to redo the hex changes any time the game updates (probably not too often, now that the game has been out for a while), or if you verify the files via steam.

Strength is viable. The earlygame will be a bit rough admittedly but it is entirely doable, and gets relatively easy once you get Divine Shot. You'll still feel the lack of being able to hit enemy weaknesses with Demi Fiend, but your raw damage output will be ridiculous.

      Anonymous

That is my biggest concern with doing the strength build, missing out on press turns, does the damage output over weigh the extra move?

        Anonymous

Yeah absolutely especially endgame it's absurd. Plus you can still put on tornado and fire breath and shit until you have all the str based moves you want.

          Anonymous

Seconding this point; if you NEED the press turns then the damage output being suboptimal doesn't really matter; you can still splash in elemental attacks on a physical build ezpz.

        Anonymous

crits take over in importance when fighting enemies with no weaknesses. My strategy was demifiend auto attacks and magic-focus demons draining the bosses so they're more useful than just off-weakness magic damage. Drain scales with magic buffs.

        Anonymous

Your demons can always make sure you get the maximum number of press turns, just make sure DF is always using a flashing icon on his turn.
So it's not like you're missing out on press turns, but more that your turns/party lineup is slightly more restricted.

STR and AGI are unironically the only stats you need in Nocturne. VIT is good for some insurance but you can easily play without investing in it at all since phys skills take a percentage of HP anyway. Luck is a meme stat that lets you dodge magic 0.1% of the time and isn't worth anything and crits are tied to AGI

      Anonymous

      >AGI
      Is also a meme, see

(Of course, it's still a good idea to invest into a little MAG for the stat doors in the Labyrinth of Amala and to make Magma Axis good)

VIT is the transcendant stat that always benefits you no matter what, STR is secondary, MAG in the early game only, AGI only slightly every handful of levels, and LCK is definitely the meme stat.
