There is one thing I don't like about Duckstation, when playing in 1x resolution blown up to full screen it has this filtering effect that cannot be removed, and the filters are disabled, so it's not as crisp as epsxe when playing it like that.
If someone knows the way to change it so it looks like clean raw pixels, pic related, I would like to know.

        Anonymous

it's called bilinear filtering. it smoothes out pixels and other effects that weren't as noticeable back then
it shouldn't be enabled by default, check these settings

          Anonymous

That worked, thanks. I assumed that it would be under the enhancements selection but it was linear upscaling that added bilinear separate from the other bilinear filter option.

The filter in the upper shot isn't even noticeable because it's meant to simulate integer scaling. The one without it is ridden with non-integer scaling artifacts and it looks ugly as sin, how can you stand it?

Because most crt filters are awful and don't portray how the games are supposed to look. Those are just awful.
I've honestly given up on emulation since I bought a retrotink 5x. I'm just playing on original hardware now.
This is how a game looks unfiltered, integer scaling at 1080p (forgive me for the shit photo quality with saturated colors, but the fastest way was to take pictures with my phone)

When I play my PS1 games on my PS1 on the crt I've had for 40 years there's literally no dithering but if I play my PS1 games on zoomer emulators there's ugly dithering to gaslight morons into thinking PS1 games had dithering

what crt and what cables are you using

        Anonymous

Crt is irrelevant dumb zoomer. And I use the cables that came with my PS1 when I bought it brand new in 1997.

          Anonymous

PS1 heavily utilized dithering to create added perceived color depth when viewed on a CRT with composite cables (the cables you're using). If you use higher quality cables, like component, the dithering patterns will become visible. The same thing happened on the Genesis and even the N64 to a lesser extent.

There is no standart for those things that devs could design games for. Only the NTSC signal is relevant

              Anonymous

CRTs themselves absolutely do matter you idiot. Devs took into account the way CRT displays seamlessly blended neighboring pixels when making pixel art, for example

                Anonymous

                this
and this is the one thing shaders cannot replicate, the way each individual pixel on a crt behaves

                Anonymous

                >Devs took into account the way CRT displays seamlessly blended neighboring pixels
NTSC signal does that, Display itself does almost nothing in that regard.

      Anonymous

PS1 games themselves didn't have dithering. Dithering was created by the console to bypass the color bit limit. The games had instructions written in their code to signal the console to create dithering patterns so that games wouldn't have color banding. The most common analog signal used with the PS1 was composite since that's the cable that came with the console, and because it was a blurry signal, combined with CRT technology, it would blend all the dither patterns. It's why some emulators have a smoothing filter like pic related, so that you won't notice it as easily.

      Anonymous

Because it actually was there, Silent Hill is one of the most clear examples and you could easily see it even on a crt. Saturn itself also had major dithering that was often visible.
Any 3d game that let you get close to the model in 3d had clear dithering you could see.
At the right distances though you easily hide it.

And you turn off the shader in the shader parameters menu, you can also just remove the scanlines too.

    mednafen + mednaffe

Because it's inaccurate as frick and stuck in 2005.
People have been using mednafen for years.
Even the normies who can't into retroach moved onto Duckstation.

I tried playing King's Field 3 on duckstation and was stuck in 15 fps, so I gave up

Pretty sure all Kings Field games run at like 20 FPS even on real hardware

KF 2 run on stable 30 once I overclock it, but 3 doesn't get affected

      KF3 is just like that
I don't know if DuckStation can do this so try it in Retroarch--the Beetle core has an option to set the cycle timing to 1, which makes 3D games run crazy smooth

Because the number of games on Sony systems are zero?

They have NEVER stopped being a movie companty.

    >why should I stop using it?
You don't have to. Better options exist if you'd like it though.

Are Cuckstationers the consolegays of ps1 emulation?

Which one better for portrait mode?

I have never once managed to get this piece of shit to even remotely work. Probably the worst emulator ever created. Also, what is with the plugin nonsense.

Plugins (as the name implies) are open source files that you "plug in" to the emulator to get it running. Most emulators that are closed source have the files built in but more open emulators like epsxe were made with outside help in mind.

In layman's terms I guess you could call them the av cables.

Would the Namco GunCon work on a old CRT monitor?
Got the monitor but I want to get the gun for Time Crisis.

If it's 60hz refresh rate it should be okay as long as you're using an analog video source. If you use an hdmi converter it probably won't work though.

      t. Anon with an HD CRT TV

I could get Duck Hunt running on NES via composite video but when plugged into my framemeister it doesn't sense the shots.

It can't play images with multiple .bin files, i.e. no CDDA music.
On top of that you have to search for some outdated plugins for this outdated emulator because none of them were updated in years.

      >It can't play images with multiple .bin files, i.e. no CDDA music
Complete bullshit. As long as you have the .cue file it will work just fine. Fricking morons and/or liars.

Use whatever you want, homie, I use duckstation and I don't give a frick.

Reminder that accurate CRT filter doesnt exist, you are just fooling yourself and make picture worse for no reason.

because being forced to use broken plugins that have not been updated since like 2006 is moronic. Also Duckstation/Swanstation exists. There is literally no reason to use epsxe.

That reminds me. Anyone ever got Xebra to run? I'm assuming it doesn't get along with Winshit 10 because I get around 25 FPS with a Ryzen 5600x.
