For now, Nintendo is always behind the trends by several years. They are also the only company that profits off their consoles. Give it another 10 years or so, I don't think it's impossible that Nintendo could eventually be forced to make a simular move, especially when companies are starting to realize money is in software sales and not hardware. If Nintendo ever had another Wii U or worse situation and didn't have enough consoles/user base to sell products to, they could end up in a very similar situation and want to chase the much higher profit potential. I think the slow over time leadership changes will definitely increase the chances.
Nintendo can only get fricked if they want it at this point. Switch is a proven concept that players enjoy. All they need is a Switch 2 with better hardware to keep third party support going and it's done. If they find a way to frick up the next console then they're just dumb as frick.

sure but i dont see why smaller devs cant burn there own disk's add a few extra's like an ost or small booklet and sell direct side stepping the publisher entirely if it took off the industry would rapidly improve, moronic drm pushed by publishers is the only reason steam took off in the first place.
