Rando's guys aren't all loyal, and some were prepared to fight him for buddy even when there were only a few of them, so who knows what a whole army would have done if Brad wasn't the immediate problem. On top of that, some people would just kill her.
Brad hurt Buddy, but he also taught her to defend herself, and a less fricked-up child wouldn't have been able to survive Olathe.
Plus he never beat her up or raped her into killing herself so he was a better parent than he ever knew.

Those quotes are misleading, the game is mostly fun and funny with some dark, depressing moments. The setting is dark but presented in a humorous way most of the time.
Those "reviews" are just for upvotes. Lisa the Joyful may lean too hard on the depressing stuff, but Painful is much more comedic. A lot of Lisa the Painful is guys just fricking around in a Mad Max world.

Aww but Yume Nikki, Oneshot, and OFF hit bump limit with their threads recently. And aside from some troony talk (of course, this is Ganker) and that one Marigay that tried to stir shit up (guess that guy is the one constant in all RPGMaker threads), those threads are amazing. I thought we could do the same for Lisa, but I guess not.
I find it odd that OFF is a game loved by this place so much. It’s an interesting game but it really just plays itself for the most part. Maybe I’m too early in it but I feel like exploring has made me so insanely overpowered that combat is just a waste of time.
But I digress, LISA is the goat RPGmaker game in my heart. Shit came outta nowhere and blew my mind. I’ve wanted to do a party with some of the less popular/more useless characters but haven’t gotten around to it.
Walking simulator is better than completely pointless JRPG random battles. At least LISA had some pretty challenging gameplay.

I understand. I can't give it much flack for being the most aged because... Well it is. It's like one of it not the first of these quirky Earthbound inspired indie RPGs. It's clearly revolutionary and I still enjoyed it when I played it for the first time this year. Also The Batter is just really cool and I think deserves the crown (for King of Ganker). Wish Madotsuki got the crown too.
Yeah I actually heard recently that MortisGhost had never played Earthbound I think. It was not a serious genre name anyways. Oneshot was lumped into the genre even though Nightmargin actually didn't like Earthbound and it's not even a Goddamn RPG in the first place.
I've never actually heard anyone talk about the actual gameplay of this game (these games?). I get the idea that it's like one of those Earthbound clones but side scrolling. Is that right?
It's an RPG maker game so it's kinda basic. However, some characters have commands that you can input for extra damage and debuffs are super important.
Outside of combat the party can get ambushed if they rest in an unsafe location which includes some story events and some characters are addicted to a drug called joy which causes withdrawal after a while.
On the topic of characters, there are 30 I think so there are many different teams you can make from that, although some are admittedly much stronger than others.
I mean I don't really have an interest in that kind of RPG so I probably won't play it, but it's odd that in the threads I've been in for the game out of curiosity I basically never see actual gameplay discussion. If the story is that good would I really miss out on anything by just watching a YouTube long-play?
I would recommend you actually you know, play a video game instead of just watching it. This game more so because it has one of the better gameplay experiences than others in the genre. It's challenging sometimes and there's strategy involved. Sometimes your party members can actually die, permanently. But yeah the story and characters are usually the best part of these games.
Yeah, because there are insta-kills that remove members of your party from the game permanently. Fortunately there’s a Chrono Chross-esque list of literal whos to choose from, so losing a few members here and there is only devastating at first until it’s not.
Ultimately it’s a pretty standard turn-based JRPG game but it’s challenging enough to keep fights from being a total chore (like in OFF, which fortunately has an Auto feature).
If you like turn-based stuff then you’ll definitely like LISA’s gameplay. If not then idk, maybe you will, but probably not.
The combat is solid, it's just that the writing is excellent so it overshadows everything else pretty much. The music is good too.
Personally I think discovering certain things first hand makes the game better, and there are certain choices that change the ending. Playing on Painful difficulty also introduces some rather important differences.
I would say you do lose by watching a playthrough, but suit yourself.
I said not JUST in a sexual way. I think she's good looking in a sexual, cool and badass way.

Lisa fangames and mods tend to take forever and this one is no exception, the original first half is painful (no pun intended) to play but the second half is extremely entertaining because the plot goes apeshit in a funny way, it's worth it for a chuckle, it's only like 2-3 hours long if you dont die too much.

ANYWAY, who are the best party members? I’ve tried to stick with the 3 OGs during this play through, but previously I just tried to keep people who could stack as much status damage as possible.
Even though he is just most likely someone's DeviantArt OC, I like Garth. Mostly because I do think he looks good. But the best is probably Birdie gameplay wise. He's insane.
Mainly because of oil spit. Giving enemies/bosses a weakness to fire damage is really strong. Terry can one shot bosses if he crits hottest dance while oil spit is active.
I actually didn't get him in my first playthrough I just know a little from other people's gameplay. Birdie has a skill called Gasoline Spit which makes all fire attacks do a shitton of damage. I think that's basically it. He makes anyone with fire attacks do insane damage. I gotta play this game again.

honestly the amount of sovl it has for a free fan game is insane. it adds a shitton of worldbuilding, which in any other ip it would come off as cringy fanfic garbo but here it works quite well.
I still need to check it out, people have been sucking it’s dick with no end in sight since it was first released. I don’t actually think I’ve ever seen anyone say a single bad thing about The Pointless.
It's really good for what it is. The gameplay/combat in particular was a highlight for me, which was surprising. It can get really tactical and demanding at times, specially in the later encounters.
My only complaints is that there’s little to no levity in the game. Humor is a big part of what made the original so memorable, but here the tone is so fricking grim it’s flat out dour at times. Also the MC is a bit boring. There isn't that immediate hook like there is with Brad and his journey to save Buddy.
It's legit on par with painful. The only problem is it's incomplete but it has a frick ton effort put into it. It's also good while doing it's own thing (there's like 2 joy mutants in the whole game).
The majority of the game takes place over a single day and you get to see a possible supernatural cult utterly wreck a whole town in a few hours. The infinity franchise might be the most kino antagonistic force I've seen in years.

My biggest problem with any fangame pointless included is complete not existence of party variety and party member death system. That's why I will ALWAYS prefer painful to any fangame until one gives party variety [/spoiler] Hopeful doesn't count since it's mostly scripted [/spoiler]

I don't like that Pain mode is the only mode of the game. I can handle any challenge but saving at a shitty checkpoint with no good ways of healing does not make me excited.

The development team is not very inclined to work on the game, and as a result, progress is very slow.
There is *allegedly* a huge imbalance in development personnel as well. There is *supposedly* only one animator available to work on the game.
*Rumor has it* that they have to outsource a majority of scripts (i.e., they have no in-house script development), which are necessary for completion.
*Apparently* there is also dissent among the development team internally, with infighting occurring from time-to-time severely inhibiting progress on the game.
I know that the chapter 1 remake will release. However, I do not expect the other chapters to release at all. Development is too chaotic and haywire.
Damn well that settles it. There's only gonna be one chapter. This sounds more messed up than the development of shitty AAA disasters like Fallout 76 and Anthem. At least those games uhh... Actually released.

It's basically a massive overhaul of Chapter 1 that almost doubles the game length, new bosses, new party members, more of Downtown and Garbage Island, for the most part matches the base game in quality.
Some really good new music too.

There's a lot of content and different choices/paths so definitely make use of all your save slots. A lot of things change and update as you beat more enemies. It makes for a really alive feeling setting but it can be easy to miss some new stuff because of it.

If you save at Downtown to replay from there (the meat of the game is still there) it's probably around 7 or 8.

I mean I was definitely this at first, but I've come to actually APPRECIATE being forced to play an unlikeable character - her rudeness to Rando should simply be taken as the personality she developed as a result of the previous game.

Not bad, but could've been much better.
Exploration feels like if all of the Painful's backtracking got condensed into the map that's about 4 times smaller.
The combat system has the same "duo" thing going as Pointless, but it lacks the same depth.
It also crashed on me a couple of times during the underwater section.
But even with all that, it's still a solid exprerience for a fangame that's even shorter than Pointless ch1.

Most of the Timeless ost was made by a ytpmver I've been following for a while and, for the first time actually composing, I think he knocked it out of the park.
The songs sound exactly like you'd imagine Lisa to sound if they were made by someone who's been using FL for longer than a month.
This song fits Frank and the whole "I've told you not to mess with my shit and now I'm going to feed you your teeth" feel of the fight very fricking well.
I bet he could take on a joy mutant on his own.
It is one of the darkest games I ever played. But it's also one of the funniest, which really helped me not feel depressed the whole way through. I suggest you push through. The game is a masterpiece and deserves all the praise. But I can understand if you won't. It doesn't get less darker. In fact it gets worse, much worse.
Thoughts? Played it for a couple hours and couldn't get into it myself. I have no problem with the stories of fangames as they're usually self contained and separate from the original, but when you're playing a fan game of a fan game it gets a little too derivative for me to give any shits about whats happening. If you're that desperate for more rpgmaker gameplay I guess it's alright.
There's a lot of hidden bullshit in this game, and its made to be played multiple times to find everything. Garbage Island has a lot of difficulty increases when you go for the bonus bosses there with the fishmen standing out as way harder than they should be. Adding an entire village and dungeon to the wasteland was pretty neat, and all the extra content besides Wilbur Sin is rad in downtown. Every single one of the new companions are great too, with Darry's story being the best

If I had the know how and cared enough to do it I'd make a fangame where the timeline splits right before Dusty got his face cut off.
Instead Bernard has a breakdown and doesn't go through with it and they become friends.
Timejump into the future and now its about Dusty and Bernard running through the wasteland to save Master Armstrongs adopted daughter.
Fairly light hearted and goofy but still with some sad serious moments.

Yeah the jerseys are outright supernatural and start to warp you if you wear them. A lot of people wound up putting on the jerseys because they thought the Franchise was 'winning' The Game not realizing the bigger picture and winding up infinitized killing machines.

There's no way to know for sure but it seems oddly convenient that Marty just so happened to be living in a random ass cave in the middle of a lake or something. The only other person who saw Marty was Buddy, who was also coked as frick, and also conveniently the only other person nearby (the mexican brother whose name I forget) gets killed before he can go in the cave. I mean it seems more likely than not but I guess it's up to the viewer to decide if that was really Marty or a hallucination.

I'm still waiting for the next game inspired by, but not connected TO, Lisa. I love that it's resonated with people, but so far it's only helped make a fandom, instead of evolving into something else yet. I don't even want a retread at all, just a game with writing and thematics, and music that's all consistent and fitting. I want someone who has played Lisa and realizes WHY it's good to make a game.
Just play Scholar of the Wilbur Sin and give up hope. Pointless is plagued with too much ambition and too many perfectionists who insist that the bar needs to go higher, and in doing so require the entire development process has to be sent back to square one to get EVERYTHING up to standard, only for "standard" to shift yet again.

Rando's guys aren't all loyal, and some were prepared to fight him for buddy even when there were only a few of them, so who knows what a whole army would have done if Brad wasn't the immediate problem. On top of that, some people would just kill her.
Brad hurt Buddy, but he also taught her to defend herself, and a less fricked-up child wouldn't have been able to survive Olathe.
Plus he never beat her up or raped her into killing herself so he was a better parent than he ever knew.

Those quotes are misleading, the game is mostly fun and funny with some dark, depressing moments. The setting is dark but presented in a humorous way most of the time.

Those "reviews" are just for upvotes. Lisa the Joyful may lean too hard on the depressing stuff, but Painful is much more comedic. A lot of Lisa the Painful is guys just fricking around in a Mad Max world.

I've never actually heard anyone talk about the actual gameplay of this game (these games?). I get the idea that it's like one of those Earthbound clones but side scrolling. Is that right?
It's an RPG maker game so it's kinda basic. However, some characters have commands that you can input for extra damage and debuffs are super important.
Outside of combat the party can get ambushed if they rest in an unsafe location which includes some story events and some characters are addicted to a drug called joy which causes withdrawal after a while.
On the topic of characters, there are 30 I think so there are many different teams you can make from that, although some are admittedly much stronger than others.
I mean I don't really have an interest in that kind of RPG so I probably won't play it, but it's odd that in the threads I've been in for the game out of curiosity I basically never see actual gameplay discussion. If the story is that good would I really miss out on anything by just watching a YouTube long-play?
I would recommend you actually you know, play a video game instead of just watching it. This game more so because it has one of the better gameplay experiences than others in the genre. It's challenging sometimes and there's strategy involved. Sometimes your party members can actually die, permanently. But yeah the story and characters are usually the best part of these games.
Yeah, because there are insta-kills that remove members of your party from the game permanently. Fortunately there’s a Chrono Chross-esque list of literal whos to choose from, so losing a few members here and there is only devastating at first until it’s not.
Ultimately it’s a pretty standard turn-based JRPG game but it’s challenging enough to keep fights from being a total chore (like in OFF, which fortunately has an Auto feature).
If you like turn-based stuff then you’ll definitely like LISA’s gameplay. If not then idk, maybe you will, but probably not.
The combat is solid, it's just that the writing is excellent so it overshadows everything else pretty much. The music is good too.
Personally I think discovering certain things first hand makes the game better, and there are certain choices that change the ending. Playing on Painful difficulty also introduces some rather important differences.
I would say you do lose by watching a playthrough, but suit yourself.

Lisa fangames and mods tend to take forever and this one is no exception, the original first half is painful (no pun intended) to play but the second half is extremely entertaining because the plot goes apeshit in a funny way, it's worth it for a chuckle, it's only like 2-3 hours long if you dont die too much.

ANYWAY, who are the best party members? I’ve tried to stick with the 3 OGs during this play through, but previously I just tried to keep people who could stack as much status damage as possible.
Even though he is just most likely someone's DeviantArt OC, I like Garth. Mostly because I do think he looks good. But the best is probably Birdie gameplay wise. He's insane.
Why was Birdie the best? I definitely used him during first play through and remember other people also talking about how he’s the most OP.
Mainly because of oil spit. Giving enemies/bosses a weakness to fire damage is really strong. Terry can one shot bosses if he crits hottest dance while oil spit is active.
Basically free blind status and boosting damage for fire attacks. + Team Heal, + He is basically me
I actually didn't get him in my first playthrough I just know a little from other people's gameplay. Birdie has a skill called Gasoline Spit which makes all fire attacks do a shitton of damage. I think that's basically it. He makes anyone with fire attacks do insane damage. I gotta play this game again.

Is the Pointless fan game dead? last i heard they were remaking the first chapter for whatever fricking reason.
honestly the amount of sovl it has for a free fan game is insane. it adds a shitton of worldbuilding, which in any other ip it would come off as cringy fanfic garbo but here it works quite well.
I still need to check it out, people have been sucking it’s dick with no end in sight since it was first released. I don’t actually think I’ve ever seen anyone say a single bad thing about The Pointless.
It's really good for what it is. The gameplay/combat in particular was a highlight for me, which was surprising. It can get really tactical and demanding at times, specially in the later encounters.
My only complaints is that there’s little to no levity in the game. Humor is a big part of what made the original so memorable, but here the tone is so fricking grim it’s flat out dour at times. Also the MC is a bit boring. There isn't that immediate hook like there is with Brad and his journey to save Buddy.
It's legit on par with painful. The only problem is it's incomplete but it has a frick ton effort put into it. It's also good while doing it's own thing (there's like 2 joy mutants in the whole game).
The majority of the game takes place over a single day and you get to see a possible supernatural cult utterly wreck a whole town in a few hours. The infinity franchise might be the most kino antagonistic force I've seen in years.
My biggest problem with any fangame pointless included is complete not existence of party variety and party member death system. That's why I will ALWAYS prefer painful to any fangame until one gives party variety [/spoiler] Hopeful doesn't count since it's mostly scripted [/spoiler]
I’d imagine it’s a pain in the ass to balance the combat around such a large cast of party members and all the synergies that could come from them. then you have to make the characters interesting too.

I don't like that Pain mode is the only mode of the game. I can handle any challenge but saving at a shitty checkpoint with no good ways of healing does not make me excited.

The development team is not very inclined to work on the game, and as a result, progress is very slow.
There is *allegedly* a huge imbalance in development personnel as well. There is *supposedly* only one animator available to work on the game.

*Apparently* there is also dissent among the development team internally, with infighting occurring from time-to-time severely inhibiting progress on the game.
I know that the chapter 1 remake will release. However, I do not expect the other chapters to release at all. Development is too chaotic and haywire.
Damn well that settles it. There's only gonna be one chapter. This sounds more messed up than the development of shitty AAA disasters like Fallout 76 and Anthem. At least those games uhh... Actually released.

It's basically a massive overhaul of Chapter 1 that almost doubles the game length, new bosses, new party members, more of Downtown and Garbage Island, for the most part matches the base game in quality.
Some really good new music too.

There's a lot of content and different choices/paths so definitely make use of all your save slots. A lot of things change and update as you beat more enemies. It makes for a really alive feeling setting but it can be easy to miss some new stuff because of it.

First time playthrough will probably take somewhere around 10-12 hours.
If you save at Downtown to replay from there (the meat of the game is still there) it's probably around 7 or 8.

There's something strangely comfy about it, despite the fact that it's literal post-apocalypse.

Not bad, but could've been much better.
Exploration feels like if all of the Painful's backtracking got condensed into the map that's about 4 times smaller.
The combat system has the same "duo" thing going as Pointless, but it lacks the same depth.
It also crashed on me a couple of times during the underwater section.
But even with all that, it's still a solid exprerience for a fangame that's even shorter than Pointless ch1.

Most of the Timeless ost was made by a ytpmver I've been following for a while and, for the first time actually composing, I think he knocked it out of the park.

It is one of the darkest games I ever played. But it's also one of the funniest, which really helped me not feel depressed the whole way through. I suggest you push through. The game is a masterpiece and deserves all the praise. But I can understand if you won't. It doesn't get less darker. In fact it gets worse, much worse.
Thoughts? Played it for a couple hours and couldn't get into it myself. I have no problem with the stories of fangames as they're usually self contained and separate from the original, but when you're playing a fan game of a fan game it gets a little too derivative for me to give any shits about whats happening. If you're that desperate for more rpgmaker gameplay I guess it's alright.

There's a lot of hidden bullshit in this game, and its made to be played multiple times to find everything. Garbage Island has a lot of difficulty increases when you go for the bonus bosses there with the fishmen standing out as way harder than they should be. Adding an entire village and dungeon to the wasteland was pretty neat, and all the extra content besides Wilbur Sin is rad in downtown. Every single one of the new companions are great too, with Darry's story being the best

Timejump into the future and now its about Dusty and Bernard running through the wasteland to save Master Armstrongs adopted daughter.
Fairly light hearted and goofy but still with some sad serious moments.

There's no way to know for sure but it seems oddly convenient that Marty just so happened to be living in a random ass cave in the middle of a lake or something. The only other person who saw Marty was Buddy, who was also coked as frick, and also conveniently the only other person nearby (the mexican brother whose name I forget) gets killed before he can go in the cave. I mean it seems more likely than not but I guess it's up to the viewer to decide if that was really Marty or a hallucination.
I figured with the presence of beer bottles he really was there, he had just exiled himself after he realized what a monster he had been.

I love that it's resonated with people, but so far it's only helped make a fandom, instead of evolving into something else yet. Pointless is plagued with too much ambition and too many perfectionists who insist that the bar needs to go higher, and in doing so require the entire development process has to be sent back to square one to get EVERYTHING up to standard, only for "standard" to shift yet again.
