Both games have skinnerbox grind gameplay, but Diablo 3 actually has abilities and enemy design that actually make the moment-to-moment gameplay fun, not to mention the potion cooldown and lack of mana potions that make resource management non-trivial. Dodging elite abilities and controlling crowds with a full stack of useful abilities is 300x more fun than mindlessly mashing left click and spamming potions. D1 is still king over both of them in terms of aesthetic and atmosphere though.

D3 is the most fricking braindead action game I've ever played. Occasionally having to step out of a very telegraphed AoE blast like in some fricking Simon Says tier gameplay doesn't compensate for all the extra shit it removed from D2. It's still horribly barebones as an action game but now it also has pretty much zero rpg mechanics
Also it's aesthetics are absolute dogshit, while D2 is only slightly behind D1 in this regard and is still amazing.

I completely disagree. the most fun I had with D3 was starting as a new class and leveling it to 60 or 70. you unlock new skills and therefore it feels like you have a character progression system (it's almost like you're putting points into skills and make them stronger by unlocking new runes).
but after you get all the skills, there is nothing to do - at least for me. beating the game on normal is as easy as taking a shit, but there's no meaning in beating the game on higher difficulties because there a like 20 (?) different torment levels. with D2 you at least have a sense of closure after beating hell baal, because you know that there are only 3 difficulty levels. with D3 on the other hand, where to decide to quit? did you beat the game at torment 1 or torment 16? or have you finally beat it when you deal 1 million damage or 10 million damage? as the end game is centered around "autistically farming" it just collapses under its own weight.

The problem is there's no alternative to Blizzard for upcoming ARPGs, the only other one on the horizon is Last Epoch and who knows how that will turn out when they even get multiplayer working. It's a pseudo MMO with an endgame and open PvP areas. No more acts where you replay the game over and over in order to level up, you can do it in a single playthrough. It also doesn't have infinite progression which means I can complete characters.
Also I like the artstyle way more than previous games, it's like they listened to all my complaints about the previous games even though I never said anything.

D4 looks too much like D3. I'm not saying it needed to look like D2 but I would have appreciated a noticeable change in art direction so it could be differentiated. This is the first time I've seen the item portrait descriptions and it really reminds me of D3. I also don't like the animations for a lot of the rogue skills or necromancer. D3 and D4 might as well not even be connected to the Diablo franchise for all I care. Should have named it something different.

Just watched some gameplay trailers. Why does a basic bow and arrow attack have a silly exaggerated draw back and a flash of white light? In fact every attack, attack impact and power has some kind of light flash and after effect, why? Why go to the trouble of making this beautiful environment with it's muted but impressionistic artstyle and then slap a bunch of cartoony POW! effects and damage numbers over the top. Gameplay looks shit and it pains me to say so

D2 was an important game for kid me and it was S-tier for atmosphere and art direction, the art in 4 is really nice so it's disappointing that their combat effects aren't in harmony with that and are instead some flashy moba effects not much different from D3. It's nitpicky maybe but I want this to be good and it shows promise so these details stick out to me

And despite all that I'd almost certainly try it anyway but what I didn't expect was the rumors there's a fricking battlepass and the issue with that is that guarantees there's going to be some kind of daily quest/daily task system for battlepass points and I CANT FRICKING STAND DAILY QUESTS I WILL NOT DO YOUR DAILY CHORES

I would still hate it, I enjoy collecting cosmetic items so it'd trigger me to miss some because I didn't log on every day to do my daily chores, I actually enjoying putting a lot of time into games over a few weeks then taking a break to play other things before returning and repeating if I enjoy the game. Retention mechanics like Battlepasses and daily quests typically force you to play every single day or miss out to conjure up the FOMO feeling and I won't tolerate a game like that. Realizing POE was a GAAS (Games as a service) style game whos entire development was based on retention mechanics was the final nail in the coffin for me, on top of its gameplay being even shallow than D3 somehow, character building was awesome though, PoB was unironically the best part of the game.
I never had a problem ignoring daily chores as long as it didn't mean I was missing out on vital progression that would let others gain an edge over me, in which case I would just quit.
D4 is a PvP game and being forced to poopsock in order to compete would suck, it's better that they allow you to complete characters within a reasonable amount of time so you can go on to work on other characters instead.
new Poe league is tomorrow and yeah it's shit so is diablo and the whole genre, it's too fricking limited at what it does, nothing new is possible, d4 looks like just another arpg this time with good graphics.

I got D3 for the Switch a few months ago. First time playing the series. I liked it quite a lot. Don't give a shit about online or the grind to make the supposedly optimal build. What do you even do with an optimal build? Just keep grinding more? No thanks. The story was basic but fine. If 4 plays like 3, I might get it.
In D3 you could grind forever and never reach max level while in D4 you can finish your characters which is nice.

The online aspect is the only thing that is interesting to me. I don't want to play Diablo 2 for the umpteenth time. If I want complex builds, I hop on to Path of Exile. What the genre needs is a really good ARPG that is meant to be played with other people. It's another soulless, low effort, half assed sequel jam packed with monetization efforts that will inevitably disappoint everyone and be an embarrassment for the publisher/studio. That's the part that feels like FO76.

I always hated replaying the acts multiple times while progress is slowing down to a crawl until you barely notice a difference anymore.
