Damn, really? That sucks to hear.
        >PD2
I don't understand how they got away with copying everything PoD did and re-releasing it but not playing that shit

this "genre" is for mentally ill people. It should have ended at d2 with no other games desperately trying to recapture that experience.

Titan Quest is okay though. I also like it's vibrant aesthetics vs all other Diablo-likes being grimdark edgy and the few others being cartoony/kiddy instead (Fate and Torchlight series). Very comfy slaughtering monsters along the beach on a beautiful sunny day.

Titan's quest was really the inbetween for Diablo and Diablo 2. If diablo 2 hadn't come out it would have had a better reception. The simple fact that it did come out first really makes TQ feel like a late installment from the first game.

That being said Torchlight 1 is also in this boat, but Torchlight 2 was a massive disappointment and much like Diablo 3 Torchlight 3 does not exist for the exact same reasons.

That being said Grim Dawn beats all of them. Grim Dawn is the spiritual successor of the Diablo franchise.

And Path of Exile is just a Free To Grind bore fest. It is very much the same as Rift was to MMOs. Not very good unless you couldn't afford video games and that's all you had.

And because it's relevant the Fate Series was the spiritual successor to Diablo prior to Grim Dawn's Release. It was a better version of Torchlight even after torchlight was released.

So in terms of ranking lists

      Grim Dawn > Fate > Torchlight 1 > Diablo 2 > Titan's Quest > PoE > Diablo 3 = Torchlight 3

Diablo 2 is pretty dated by modern standards, there are much better games available like Titan Quest or Grim Dawn

Neither have the replay value of D2.

        Anonymous

Really? How is D2 more replayable? It really isn't compared to TQ or GD, which have way more classes. Build variety? Most of the D2 builds suck and there are really only like 4 that are viable. Random map? Most of the world is empty as frick, like skyrim level empty besides random mob hordes. TQ and GD may have non random maps but that actually makes them more replayable since you know what to skip and how to move through them most efficiently. D2 is completely obsoleted as a game, most people still pushing it are only fueled by nostalgia and "DUUUDE MEMBER THE GEM NOISE! *DING* WOOOAHH"

Anyone who thinks D2 is even remotely replayable is a boomer whose only memory of the game is picking necro and finishing normal difficulty with 15 skeletons
D2 is the most build limiting game in the genre

            Anonymous

Which is sad, because there's a bunch of cool-yet non-viable builds. I remember Median XL opening up some different paths, although it comes with it's own jank.

              Anonymous

Median is too much of a revamp, I love the mod but it shouldn't be compared with d2 at all. Still, the lengths they managed to take d2 engine is impressive

TQ/GD environments are vast stretches of nothingness. It's mind-numbing in a way that D2 never is. I enjoyed TQ but I wouldn't look forward to replaying it. GD I couldn't finish my first playthrough, I got near the very end and it was just too boring.

            >mind-numbing in a way D2 never is
Are you moronic? The only way D2's map engages you is by making you look for all the RNG locations. It's a flat fricking jpeg otherwise. TQ/GD environments have destructible elements + secret paths + 3d elements that allow things like ranged classes taking advantage of higher ground to fire down on enemies. Take off the nostalgia goggles.

Atmosphere dude, Diablo 2 is amazing in that regard.

It's a coherent design but in the modern day it's not really that amazing. Just because it did it first doesn't mean it did it the best.

The 1st Diabo was more of the atmosphere game, but yeah it was great in II as well.

              Anonymous

Yes I agree that somehow Diablo 1 had even better atmosphere, but I think that was largely because of how condensed it was, it was just 1 town and 1 location to fight in.
Mat Uelman, the music dude, is a genius. Imagine that he was only 23 when he composed that music, it sounds like pure pitch darkness and evil.

I played in closed beta and paid actual money for tabs and cosmetic microtransactions. The game has gradually become shittier over the years, coincidentally when Tencent bought majority shares in GGG.

I actually own Diablo 2 legally but I can't figure out how to install it. Tried it a year ago to try some mods and the Installer actually doesn't work. I am also if they did the shitty Warcraft 3 thing where they removed the old version if you didn't have it.

Of course it fricking won. Do you have any idea how much thought put into diablo's loot system? The team who put that game together were way ahead of the curve. They basically designed it like a gambling game and coated it with good graphical design and ambience. No woke shit, nothing unnecessary, simple story with good immersive cinematics that stay on point. PoE was good before they added all this excessive shit that over complicates what's supposed to be a simple arpg. With that simplicity gone, 100% need for extra inventory, character creation limit, nerfs to fun builds, no way anyone will remain happy with poe.
