The BDSP localization is obviously shit, but I just want to ask would "なかよしカップル"/"nakayoshi kappuru" really be "lovey-dovey couple"? Doesn't "lovey-dovey" feel a bit too strong for "nakayoshi" or am I just not understanding some Japanese nuance? It's like "having a good relationship", so wouldn't "close couple" or "intimate couple" make more sense?

Yes, you're failing to understand that the Japanese カップル has much stronger romantic connotations than the English "couple" does. The "nakayoshi" -> "lovey-dovey" translation was done to bring the overall feel of the full phrase up to the same level.

Yes, the original Japanese clearly has Mars implying he and Dawn are dating, which he denies. But the weird localization of Mars' line (changing the original "lovey-dovey couple" translation to "goody-goody couple") makes it read like he's furiously denying something Mars didn't even mean to say in the first place.
I don't think that's what the Masters localizer was actually GOING for, but it shows how the original DP localization was the better one in getting the intended point across.
