If anything killed Z, it was the remakes. SM were always going to be in 2016, no matter what other games the remake/rehash team decided to make in the time between.

Obviously they will revisit Kalos at some point. Question is: how? Faithful remake wouldnt make sense considering a lot people see XY as unfinished so BDSP route is a no go. They'll need an expanded story to make a remake work. Legends style game would make a lot of sense given how historical Kalos is.
It sucks we didn't get it, if you haven't watched it I'd recommend checking out the xy anime it has a bunch of zygarde lore
