It requires the roms but they do not provide them, and they only accept money in the form of donations if I remember correctly. It's been around for 11 years so I don't think it's going to go anywhere soon, unfortunately.

There are hidden abilities and they are easier to get than in the base games. Also when it comes to learnsets they just combined them from all games, that's superior. But saying there are no hidden abilities already betrays you don't know what you're talking about.

I don't know why people feel such a strong urge to make up lies to attack pokemmo with. It's not even trolling style lies, it's just being wrong and usually people are afraid of being wrong, but they don't bat an eye at being wrong over this specific game.

I mean go ahead and keep switching between dead carts if you want.
          >changed effects of moves/abilities
it's fine when gamefreak does this every gen I guess. same applies to other things like splitting hairs over mechanics, there are no lures in the base game for example.
it's true you can't own all legendaries, I'm guessing that's related to comp, but the system in place is pretty fun anyway. they are rare encounters at specific locations, and if you defeat them they "join" you temporarily, and other players can force fights on you to "steal" them. it's for pokedex completionism and the pvp minigame, you don't even need them to have a completed natdex for accessing certain endgame content.

no, I have no balltism especially when I have 5 master balls. I wasn't looking for a raikou, I was farming smeargle at the time. I don't know the rarity but I heard it was really high and didn't want to get roar'd so I master balled. dunno what else I'd use them on other than maybe an exploding shiny.

this "thing" is an overall superior experience to current nintendo goyslop.

Have an open mind, give it a try. I promise if you genuinely enjoy the original 5 region games you will have a good time, and it will actually be moderately challenging.

Also, they added HAs and (some) Legendaries are in game, just not permanently capturable.

Does the game still destroy my Pokemon when I breed them and make learning moves prohibitively expensive to force you to grind arbitrary materials? If so, not interested. I'm already casual enough with those mechanics, making them even more awful than base RS is not something I'm interested in. The fact that you can get more than one earthquake tm makes it superior to the carts in the first place, regardless of whether or not you have to spend 3 minutes rebattling a few trainers in unova to afford to buy one.

Okay, but the game has Unova in it, which had infinite use TMs anyway? You're saying you want the game to be worse than a game that's already in the game? The only realistic thing that is effectively grindier in pokemmo than the base games is shiny hunting, and even then an argument could be made for any horde pokemon being easier to find shiny. Everything else is about the same or much faster, especially after gaining some knowledge. Sweet scent + earthquake/surf/etc. is insanely fast leveling compared to the base game for example,, but a new player might not realize that immediately.

Seamless item/pokemon pool between five regions, much better AI, more challenging level curve/movesets, actual realistic reasons to breed in the first place, massive piles of QoL in all kinds of areas, actual living multiplayer, in game economy adding lots of gameplay elements that don't exist on cartridge, consistent mechanics, near-sandbox level learnsets and move access, not limited to specific mons on specific games, no exclusives. Off the top of my head.

My main gripe with it is its too easy to buy money. I've also heard of a couple of whacko nerfs, like wonder guard.

If you're only interested in meta pvp, there is no reason to play pokemmo. It's a vastly superior version of the gen 1-5 games if you like playing pokemon games. But if you're only into fights with other players and nothing else then do showdown.

I understand the knee-jerk aversion, I had it too, but I've done 100x the breeding in pokemmo despite having 20x the playtime in cartridge games. That's because there is real incentive, unlike cartridge games. As for moves, I don't do comp so I don't have a valid opinion. I've been jarred by things like baton pass and wonder guard working differently.

Comp existing is just one more incentive that exists in both games. Which, pokemmo actually has comp for games that don't even have MP support without a link cable anymore. The difficulty level is much higher than the base games so having good IVs is important, and dramatically increases incentives for breeding. The market alone is a big incentive. Based games you can wipe the game with one six zero IV pokemon.

something I like about mmo mechanics is when you're doing something like catching 20 of one pokemon looking for good IVs, the excess pokemon you catch aren't wasted. you can sell the excess on the player market for liquid to put toward your other goals. this applies to other stuff too like thieving items and pickup which I used to do as a kid for larp reasons. in a game like this though the charcoals you steal from vulpixes get you decent liquid.

So, is breeding in mmo easier or harder than mainline, keeping in mind the only changes to breeding in MMO other than consuming the parents is averaging the IVs of the parents?

Everstone and Power Item breeding has been a thing since Gen 4 I think

      Anonymous

It's not exactly easier or harder, just different, unless you're doing hundreds of breeds with hacked dittos on cart games. The pokemon market makes certain aspects easier if you have a good income method, but consuming parents makes others harder. The main thing in my opinion though is incentive, which barely exists in cart games and heavily exists in pokemmo.

      Anonymous

I will preface by saying that last i bothered with breeding in the games was XY so it might be easier now but overall i would say it takes about the same amount of time when it comes to actually breeding the main difference is the setup that comes before the act

In the vanilla games the bulk of the effort would be in getting a male pokemon in each egg group with 6iv but that is just once and afterwards you get that you can breed a 5iv pokemon in about 30 min to 1hr due to rng

In pokemmo you can control every aspect of breeding down to the gender of the offspring so they get rid of rng HOWEVER if you want a 5iv pokemon you will need to either catch or buy 32(i believe it was) pokemon with 1 perfect IV in different stats and that has to be done for each pokemon you want to breed and that takes the bulk of the time needed
On average you need 1mil per 1 natured 5iv, 2 hours of gym rematches net you around 600k per day

        Anonymous

These are my two big dick mons. I would say on average each cost me around 5-600k to build.

Also showing off this thing i caught as a level 3 weedle in johto, I fully evolved it before checking its IVs.

          Anonymous

Of course, there are many other factors coming into play for example rolling an optimal nature before you breed the natured 4iv can cut a chunk of the cost, or catching all the breeders yourself, or getting a wild pokemon with multiple perfects ivs, etc

But 1mil would be an average

If Pokemmo doesn't have farmable Bottle Caps, Ability Pills, and Nature Mints it's not worth playing

I know there are ability pills but i don't think there are caps or mints

I'm 200% sure it doesn't. It relies on some kind of mmo economy which requires raising Pokemon to be as annoying as possible. I played it before and I recall some of the rematches having a real world cooldown unless they changed it.

It's been there for over a decade.

      [...]
how does breeding all 31 IVs work? I thought you get the average between the two parent numbers.

You get high and low rolls in equal parts when breeding, but there are also held items that force inheritance of a stay or nature. The more 31s you want the more breeds you will need and the more planning you have to do, and getting 4 is a lot easier than getting 5 which is a lot easier than getting 6.

Personally for average use pokemon I just make sure they have at minimum around 130 total with a good spread, and 150-160 total with a good spread is where pokemon start being barely distinguishable in play to a mon with 31s, and after that having all 31s is more about autism/perfectionism.

I played it many years ago. Still have some really rare usernames. The new games suck, the new moves suck. It’s too much of a clusterfrick. Too much switching. Everyone tries too hard worrying about having the perfect stats and the perfect strategies. It’s not the same as when you’d battle your friends using gameboys and link cables. The shit becomes too much of a grind. Past gen 3 Pokémon, it’s just moronic. Even gen 3 itself is questionable. At the same time if you did just have the first 2 generations, maybe everyone would have similar Pokémon, idk, could be a catch22. If you were to line up all Pokemmo players irl and slap them one by one really hard across the face before they sign up and tell them “DO NOT SPEND COUNTLESS HOURS LOOKING UP TUTORIALS FOR STRAGERIES AND THE BEST STATS OR YOU’LL BE SLAPPED AGAIN AND PERMNANENTLY BANNED.” Then it could possibly help, it would be interesting. More people would probably have fun, except during the initiation slap. This is just my opinion so it’s the right one. Don’t take what I’m saying with a grain of salt. If you didn’t even exist in life before people were playing each other at school on the gameboy during at least the second gen then you literally have no point trying to add any opinion to this. Doing so will require presenting a legitimate birth certificate, ID and a picture of your mother giving birth to you while you were crowning.

I think gen 1 and 2 are the best but this is good as an mmo and would probably replay gens 1-5 on pokemmo more in the future because there's more incentive besides just autistically replaying it for muh nostalgia

I’m gonna say something to you and I want you to read this in a funny accent to yourself whilst also listening very carefully to what I’m about to say because I’m ridiculously smart. If you take the game chess for example, the possibility of moves are almost endless. They say that after the second pair of turns, there are 197,742 possible games, and after three moves, 121 million. But it’s actually 122 million, I counted. Don’t believe big tech. Anyway, with all those moves you need to remember that there are still only 32 pieces on the board. So you don’t need a thousands of different Pokémon and moves. This is where they fricked up and they knew this but they had no choice to keep pushing out more and more crap, ice cube Pokémon.. flying icecream.. to keep selling cute things to kids. So it’s not about just nostalgia, it’s actually causing nothing but problems when you keep adding more and more unnecessary pieces to the board.

I just don't play comp. I play pokemom to have adventures and collect cool monsters.

Whilst I can understand where you’re coming from, a crucial part of the game was battling against each other. But I do agree, it’s fun to go on adventures, catch pokemon, maybe even do things to the female pokemon, but I forgot where I was going with this and you guys didn’t present any birth certificates.

What region should I do first?

whichever feels freshest, though if you're just looking for a 'meta' answer it might be unova since it has lots of features that are good for setting up for other regions.

Just started like 4 days ago and am at the E4 for both johto and kanto since I decided to do them at the same time. Worked out fairly well so far though the shit like the ho oh boss fight through me for a loop.

Johto was many magnitude harder than kanto. Given Johto is actually brand new to the game I guess it makes sense its so frickin hard. Maybe dont do it unless you feel like feeling the pain.

      Anonymous

I like johto and unova the most, but play whatever draws you the most imo. The order doesn't really matter. Unova has really good moneymaking stuff in the postgame tri cities area.

I've only ever used attacking moves with the highest power. are there any interesting tactics or abilities you can recommend? I tried using the Serene Grace ability with Tri Attack but it doesn't feel like my math adds up. 7%*3 + 1 stage should add to 40+%, no?

swords dance and similar moves can set up some pretty clean team wipes.
I always run 1-2 chunky slow pokemon for switching/healing, has saved my ass more than once.
weather mechanics are fun and lots of pokemon change the weather when they pop in.
there are random pokemon with interesting abilities all over the place. a friend of mine ran a mienshao with renerator, sunny day, rain dance, u-turn and some fighting move. they'd set up the weather they wanted, take a hit, u-turn and heal 1/3rd HP.

is there a list of them or something? does every Alpha have one? the wiki doesn't tell

          Anonymous

I believe every alpha has a hidden ability. I don't think every pokemon gets alpha spawns, but most I've looked up do. I use pokemondb to check for hidden abilities if it isn't on the wiki, though they can be looked up on the market too. I don't know about any lists.

the only thing I know for sure is that they're planning more types of legendary encounters. I was really impressed with the fights they had in johto, even red gyarados was a cool scary surprise boss monster.
