I really wanted to like this game because i always wanted a more of a live service SMT styled game, but the gacha and how fricking slow you get to roll when playing free really kills it.

Pom Pom is barely even a mascot. He has no relevance to anything. Paimon is a character who gives her thoughts on things, converses with you and other people, and has some heart warming and fun moments and gags.
I guess if you really hate how Paimon is Traveler's voice you could think that just out of neutral feelings toward Pom Pom.
But the reality is you're probably a furry.

Does this game do the thing where the first week or so they seem to give you a lot of pulls for free but then they cut off the feed slowly to force you to spend money?
Daily/weekly sources are decent enough, but the fat chunk of your free pulls honestly comes from clearing Simulated Universe and seeing things for the first time. You get currency for finding new events/passives/progressing further than before, it's also far less of a barrier to entry than genshin's abyss, you can grind the first difficulty repeatedly for full reward (the score requirement goes up the higher your rank is, higher difficulties give more points) and it's a weekly thing rather than bimonthly
I pull with no expectations to begin with, I only play Genshin for the exploration stuff and Star Rail is basically a five minute interest for now. I like how all the optional text is like reading some wacky shit from Disco Elysium.
I have another game for satisfying my urge to collect things because I can get everything for free with a mild level of grinding.
I just hate how these stupid mascots are corporately made from the moronic big eyes to simple shapes to sell plushies and whatnot, Atlus does this same shit with Persona and i hate all of them.

They give you few pulls since the very beginning

it seems to be significantly better than Genshin Impact for F2P generosity, though in general i feel i have gotten very good luck with my pulls.
i've managed seven 5* characters and one 5* lightcone with zero dupes entirely F2P and i still haven't done majority of the side quests.
random fricking chests giving 20-30 currency towards rolls is so fricking nice compared to the 2-5-10 that genshin impact max out at.
I got fricked with my free pulls and after a month of playing just dropped the game, you are very lucky.
You definitely lucked out. Both Genshin and Star Rail are massive dupe magnets in my experience.
