Portal 2 is definitely a case of what made Portal 1 work and running it into the ground, especially in terms of writing and humor.
I can tell you now what Portal 1 was about, it was about being a human lab rat caught in a maze created by a malicious AI and escaping. I genuinely couldn't tell you what the hell happened in Portal 2. It was all over the fricking place. There's a British AI for some reason who stutters a lot and says wacky things, and beyond that it's just a series of setpieces and holding the player hostage until the next scene plays. The actual gameplay is pushed way to the background. And then fricking JK Simmons says a bunch of nonsequitors about lemons and shower curtains and HOLY SHIT just shut the frick up.
Portal 2 definitely took the franchise in such a bad direction it's evident by the lack of subsequent releases, even though in theory you could just keep making portal puzzles forever and releasing them as games as long as you kept a down-to-earth semi-humorous comedy backdrop that doesn't scream in your face like it did in Portal 2.
Snippets are coming back to me now, in the end you make a portal to the fricking moon to beat the bad guy.
