No way Grim is overrated, that level of art direction and writing is still unmatched within its genre and probably outside of it. >picrel
I mean I enjoyed it when it came out but goddamn people made a religion out of this and its consequent episodes. I get that the valve engine was majestic at the time and etc. etc. but Jesus people.
So why do you think a game with terrible puzzles, a story that shits the bed half way, and bad mechanics is good other than the art direction when games like Monkey Island or Day of Tentacle don't have those issues (Or at least not to that extent)
I specifically said writing and art direction. Where exactly is half way because I enjoyed every part of it >bad mechanics
the controls were never an issue for me, used to tank controls in prerendered backgrounds >terrible puzzles
they werent? >Monkey Island or Day of Tentacle
MI1 is the classic but in art direction, premise and dialogue I still prefer Grim. And I never found DoT to be humorous -- it didnt do it for me.
The controls aren't what makes the mechanics bad the bad mechanics is that the inventory puzzles are clunky and boring because even with hotkeys it takes far too much time to get anything done. As opposed to MK islands simple but far more effective and non time consuming UI.
The puzzles aren't terrible but they aren't based in anything real or logical, it's very goofy and abstract and the solution doesn't feel rewarding but rather you figured out what the frick the dev was thinking. Because Tim Schafer is a big fan of abstract cartoony puzzles where as Ron Gilbert despises that

It's an AG, I'm not in a hurry and you're exaggerating the time it takes ofc. >The puzzles aren't terrible but they aren't based in anything real or logical, it's very goofy and abstract and the solution doesn't feel rewarding but rather you figured out what the frick the dev was thinking. I cant identify with this at all. The puzzles made sense within that world so you had to think within it.
Either way, I hope they dont bring it back like Ron is doing with MI. Some things are far better dead and buried, and I for one dont mind letting go of the past in order for it not to become whatever Guybrush new face is about.

It's not about the mere speed of what you're doing but how usable it is. It's basically just a load time to use your items, like Monkey Island 1 has a great puzzle involving switching your grog cups which could only work with an inventory thats fast and usable, expecting the player to rapidly interact with the inventory in Fandango wouldn't work as well
I'm actually happy MI is being brought back, I want to see Rons finale to a story he never got to finish. Even if the wrong people are working on it and it has a globehomosexual artstyle, hopefully it's somewhat satisfying

The only power the Secret TM had was the fact it remained a mystery. Now he's going to reveal it and it will be a massive disappointment to everyone because it'll never live up to what was set 31 fricking years ago. It wont be satisfying and you know it.

Ioving something also means letting it go. you're setting yourself up for a huge letdown.
>find a copy of Grim Fandango in my Dad's desk as a child >ask him about it a decade later and he said it was an alright game
I don't know Ganker I trust him more than you
Overrated doesn't mean bad, and it doesn't even mean you dislike it.
I like Half Life 2, for instance, but I think it's overrated as frick.
Honestly, to call it "an alright game" when you have other people saying it's a masterpiece, it seems like your dad would be one of the ones to say it's overrated.
nah, the adventures of manny calavera is a true masterpiece.
Disco Elysium

A shitton, been in the AG forums for far too long.
So why do you think a game with terrible puzzles, a story that shits the bed half way, and bad mechanics is good other than the art direction when games like Monkey Island or Day of Tentacle don't have those issues (Or at least not to that extent)
not him but the game is fantastic and the puzzles are not even terrible except for maybe 1 or 2.
I specifically said writing and art direction. Where exactly is half way because I enjoyed every part of it
