On my recent replay of dark souls I realized the entirety of the game is mediocre apart from the DLC. DaS1, DaS2, and Bloodborne all have bad base game content, whereas DaS3, Sekiro, and Elden Ring have really strong base game content.
The problem with the other games is that:
>they mostly abandon interconnectivity (with the exception of Bloodborne and Elden Ring's legacy dungeons)
>they're all much faster, stamina management is barely a thing, the combat no longer feels tactical
And I don't even necessarily agree with your premise. Sen's Fortress, Blighttown and Undead Burg are some of my favourite Souls areas, while I can't think of any notable standouts for DaS 3 and Sekiro. Though I agree that the bosses and individual art direction are mostly better in newer games. And Elden Ring's Stormveil Castle is probably the single best area in any Souls game.
I'm literally playing DaS3 right now and there's a ton of branching paths, genuine branches that lead to new and optional things, and not just interconnected linear areas like Das1. It's honestly even better than I remembered. And the only base game boss in DaS1 that doesn't totally suck shit is O&S, the rest are even worse than DeS. Casting in DaS3 is also a blast, it's the only game I'll not play melee in, dark hand pyro is sick.

See, I personally prefer said "interconnected linear areas" to the branching paths. Though I don't really think DaS1 is all that linear, at least it didn't feel like it.

I might give it a whirl. Haven't gone through DaS 3's DLC yet, going through the base game as a mage and respeccing to melee when I hit the DLC seems like a nice change of pace. Though I'll probably go through Lies of P first.
