Power-stanced Great Stars with Cold Infusion is the best melee weapon in the game.
Either you know or you need to ask somebody.

why do pointy maces always get to cause bleed when 90% of bladed weapons don't?
because NOBODY uses maces
maces have been the best weapon to use for every game since 2 since everything is armored and weak to blunt damage
That and I would swear they do more stance/poise damage than bladed weapons in ER. I cause stance breaks all the time with great hammers and nowhere near as often with great swords.
most greatswords do 33 poise dmg with the heavy attack while most great hammers do 39 poise dmg

>giant piece of metal on a stick has bigger poise damage then a slicing weapon.
no shit moron.
It’s honestly criminal how useless most of the weapon classes are when you come to understand how heavily the game is tuned around stance breaking and poise damage. It’s just night and day the experience of landing 8 hits with a katana and the boss tanking it all vs 3 jumping attacks with a heavy weapon and bringing them to their knees.
so what you're telling me is that I DID beat the game with moonveil +10 and mimic tear on release?
I remember very specifically around the time the network test was out, saying to myself that this time I will use all the fun tools they give me. I've done strict roll+R1 for enough Souls playthroughs that I should be allowed to use cool weapon arts and spells now
Moonveil used to stagger much more with the ranged attack and was nerfed over time, so no you did not beat the game using it at release sorry.
>A weapon is bad at doing a thing it's not designed or intended to do
No shit moron
Look at this homosexual pretending like it’s not a balance issue. Kek.
It's not a balance issue dipshit. The only bad weapons are moronic meme weapons like whips and flails. Big frick off weapons do shit loads of poise damage and have big range, smaller ones sacrifice these properties for better DPS and status buildup.
Not just better DPS but also the ability to actually attack during a safe window rather than the boss hitting you faster than your attack finishes
Please stop trying to pretend axes, hammers, thrusting swords, claws, etc are “JUST AS GOOD IN A DIFFERENT WAY” and like the game doesn’t clearly favor certain weapon classes. Makes you like youve never even played it.
The only one of those that's even remotely bad is small axes.
I didn’t say they were bad. They’re viable. But they are an entirely different tier than the better weapon classes in the game. It’s ridiculous to claim otherwise.
>I didn’t say they were bad. They’re viable.
Then why are you b***hing? "Oh it's unbelievable how tuned this game is around poise breaks :(", which isn't even fricking true, the best weapon class in the game is the halberd followed by twin blades.
You're moronic and your rhetoric is that of a homosexual.
That aside:
>which isn't even fricking true
it is.
>the best weapon class in the game is the halberd followed by twin blades
by what metric? AR? DPS?
this isn't you?
>katanas are underpowered
This fricking board lmao.
Scimitars, straight swords, rapiers and daggers are the weakest melee weapons
>but status buildup
this just proves my point, moron.
>this just proves my point, moron.
>B is bad
>this trait of B which is miles above other weapons classes proves this
Loosen the straps on your safety helmet if you think 4 hits of status application with each run/jump l1 on curved swords is "bad". I've done GS, colossals, and great hammer runs before I tried dual scavenger swords and the complete lack of poise break is irrelevant given how quickly I melt everything in comparison to all those other weapons. The only time they ever felt weak was when trying to fight the adult Fallingstar Beast in Gelmir while being under leveled, which requires a switch to Bloody Helice backup weapon for poise damage and reach.
Status buildup isn't unique to light weapons, dumbass.
You can slap bleed/frost on big weapons too with something like bloodflame blade or frost weapon or using something like the rotten battlehammer/great stars and then have great stagger potential AND status effects.
Play with dual keen daggers or dual keen scimmy as a pure DEX build without any status shenanigans. Easily the hardest weapons to play with.
You admitting that these weapons can't stand on their own legs without status buildup is what proves my point. Good night, moron. I have to go to bed now.
Clearly need your sleep you senile fool, seeing as you can't do basic math.
>this just proves my point
No it fricking doesn't. These wepaons doing different things better than the big weapons is WHY THERE IS MORE THAN ONE KIND OF WEAPON.
>it is.
No it isn't.
>by what metric?
Good AR, good DPS, good poise damage, great range, great infusion flexibility, great ashes.
aka strike damage?
last time I heard now I heard that pierce was the strongest type in er
swords are more aesthetic though so more people use them, it's that simple
The real reason is that great swords and colossal swords are faster, longer, and have more versatile move sets than great hammers and colossal hammers respectively. They rarely do something non-archetypal. CSs in particular are just shockingly easy in PVE since they stagger almost everything in the game and each swing hits every enemy within 10 feet of you in every direction.
you're mostly right but a lot of latergame bosses you may have trouble finding openings to safely hit with CS. They leave you open for quite a while after each swing. Yesterday I was fighting godfrey (the one that gives the pouch) and I'm 99% certain he can't be staggered.
that homies easy tho
>99 Vigor
>Prayerful Strike
>Morgott Rune
>HP Physick
>HP Ring+2
>Max Poise
It's gaming time.
Does this still scale the projectiles off of STR
For the weapon skill? Yeah, it's either based off Str or just weapon upgrade level.
bro, i have 400 hours in this game, from the launch, pretty much 100% the game and yet i still have not seen like 50% of the loot locked behind 0.01% droprate
frick this gay shit
It's a guaranteed drop from doing a cave in Liurnia.
D:
>Cold Infusion
Is cold infusion actually worth it? I tried it on my giant crusher and you just lose so much damage
Depends on your build and the weapon scaling obviously. If you’re an intelligence build Cold Great Stars are great with the dual Frost and Bleed build up, and that damage scales well (just need to invest a little in Str/Dex).
If the weapon scaling is already leaning towards your stats before you infuse it and you're using it against things that can be frostbitten, yeah. You lose a small amount of damage per hit for a big chunky frost proc in only one or two hits with bigger weapons. The default scaling is important, a cold Flamberge is not a good weapon for a strength build but a cold Watchdog Greatsword is.
>Giant-crusher
>Watchdogs greatssword
>Crucible armor without fatrolling
and then I just jump-attacked everything to death
wasn't terribly exciting tbqh
I used this mace with crucible armor, aesthetic as frick.
That build absolutely eats Malenia alive, I can tell you that.
Remind me again why strength weapons needed buffs on almost every patch.
for me, it’s guts greatsword and a tattered cape
Sorry I will never stop using my Giant-Crusher with Lion's Claw
I just wish I could use Seppuku with Great Stars.
For me it's Darkmoon Greatsword with Godfrey Icon, Alexander Jar Shard, and Magic Scorpion charm to pump out nuclear charged R2s.
Was actually thinking about trying a cold hammer build for a new character for when the DLC drops. Any recommendations on what stats to aim for? Not sure if cold enchant (for an actual icy hammer look) or the smithing infusion is better, or whether to do it with this or brick hammer.
I just like the controller vibration and watching numbers go up with the charged L2
If you need a good weapon to win you're bad at the game.
I like a greataxe with prayerful strike to unga bunga hp regen my way through things. Particularly the Executioner one with the higher crit scaling on it.
Power-stance Great Stars + jump attacks absolutely destroys bosses
Powerstancing is boring to me. I like the idea of two different weapon types, for versatility.
Whip is pretty good as a mismatched offhand, since the heavy attack on it has great reach and stagger, so you can potentially stunlock some enemies you wouldn't expect.
Dark Souls 1 my favorite of that was spear in left hand, claymore in right hand. Having pokes and sweeps is nice, would still probably work here.
didn't the one handed claymore R2 lead with a huge poke in DaS? its versatility and early pickup was the reason it was so popular. Wierd that you paired it with another weapon.
Yeah, but it's a pretty slow thrust vs quick longer-reaching pokes a spear gives, and isn't a repeated poke with more R2's.
It's just nice to have excellent power and crowdclearing in one hand, crazy reach and precision in the other. Same concept with ER whip in one hand and another weapon in the other, though not sure what pairs best and in which hand.
Faith build Blasphemous Blade is pretty fun
>not going all in with a regen build
NGMI
I'm pretty sure the objectively best melee weapon in the game is Giant Crusher.
Who the frick needs status effects, when you have so much damage and stagger you just instantly overwhelm everything?
I'd say the crit greataxe is almost as good.
