Tomba! was the one thing the PS1 had that really was comparable to Zelda in its focus on completing quests through exploration and experimentation.
The only ones I even know of are the Alundra games
Actually now that I think of it, how is Legend of Mana? I downloaded it but never got around to actually playing it
Legend of Mana isn't even vaguely similar to Zelda outside of both having fantasy settings. It's a decent game, but designed to be played with a guide unless you plan to replay it multiple times. It's decent though
>but designed to be played with a guide
Why do people keep saying that?
I've played it without a guide and did just fine.
I think I've managed to do most quests the game had to offer, only failing 2 of them.
Latest meme for people who can't think for themselves.
Well, Alundra 1 is basically a larger, meaner LttP with an actual story, though it's pointless to compare it to the N64 Zeldas, which I assume is the "point" of the op.
The irony of the second Alundra though is that, though it's 3D, it can't even hold a candle to the original 2D Alundra.
Reminds of this
Alundra 2 is a light hearted game, not really serious so you get funny scenes like that.
In Silent Hill there is an overworld and dungeons, it's also my favorite PS1 game so I guess it's my Zelda-killer
Interesting way of viewing that. I never thought of it that way. I guess that's why the old school REs feel suddenly like a role-playing game (like Zelda or Dragon Quest) at the time to me on recent playthroughs.
I had the same impression from SH1 and I was really disappointed by SH2 lacking the same sort of cohesion.
MediEvil.
Medievil is King's Field in 3rd person
Your mom's King's Field in 3rd person
Forever waiting on Brightis translation
this is a dark souls killer decades before dark souls
>dark souls
it's more nier, just like the other Quintet developed games, which was formed out of former Ys people. Why does every action RPG default to be being compared to Dark Souls nowadays, as if that's the only action RPG series in existence
isn't there an ai that can translate these in real time?
only dodging simulator drones care about this ''hidden gem'' slop
when it gets translated it will be forgotten after few weeks just like what happened after the Steam port of that one shitty ''Le Dark Souls grandfather'' game from Spain
Hype over severance was always forced by pc gamers with an inferiority complex over the success of dark souls on console. Don't listen to idiots who make up dumb shit to promote their faves.
the grandfather of dark souls was legend of zelda look link even has the souls roll
The OoT roll is really a lot more interesting than Souls'. It lowers your hitbox under high hitting attacks (while backflipping does the opposite and raises it) and its iframes can be hard countered by strong attacks. So OoT has a really diverse set of defensive mechanics that each have potentially specific uses that just unfortunately don't matter in the original game, so you're only going to see them taken advantage of in source code mods.
>'Le Dark Souls grandfather'' game from Spain
What game?
I honestly have NO fricking clue what he's talking about. Blasphamous maybe? Even then that's a 2D Metroidvania inspired game.
kys the Spanish game is fricking AWESOME
Severance Blade of Darkness
BoD is way better than dark souls, thoughbeitever.
just learn japanese you lazy bum
here it is
https://wiki.recalbox.com/en/basic-usage/features/retroarch-ai-ingame-translation
I played it with Retroarch's AI translation and 95% of everything was well translated.
It was the best results I ever gotten with AI translation, I was frankly amazed. just do it bro.
How does that work? Does it hack the text in-game or is it an overlay?
what's the best service URL for japanese
idk but this is what I used when I played Brightis
You press a button, an overlay appears, press again and it disappears
Wtf it this space age AI tech?
>YouTube it
>It's 4 years old
Wtf.
In case you're still not convinced.
It's only available on PC. Doesn't work for us androidgays. Not sure why.
not him but I think it works on Android didn't tried tho
Um, this is problematic. You must hire Sabrina Vasquez and Shaleigh Deshawn to localize the game, do not DARE using AI, it will never be as accurate and soulful as a human localization! Besides, think of all the insensitive outdated misogynistic and transphobic language used in Japanese media.
>translates buy as sell
>ignores a bunch of the flavor text
>seethes
>copes
If you don't know enough japanese that you can't adequately use it as a supplementary tool, what are you doing with your life?
Peasants like you shouldn't be catered to.
It's such a basic thing there's no excuse for fricking that up.
Actually it's just getting confused by the cursor coupled with how close to each others the lines are. If I move the cursor down I'm getting "BUY AND SELL"
>peasant rages because he can't comprehend simple solutions to simple problems
Thanks for proving my point, the underclasses like you really don't deserve to have their problems heard. You are a never-will.
rages because he can't comprehend simple solutions to simple problems
>simple solution
>AI
>simple solution
If one is so lost he needs things like "buy" and "sell" to be translated he's not worthy and should stick to telling himself that "if the game wasn't released for me in my country that means it's shit". Menus can be learnt, the important things are the dialogues, and in the case of what's shown in that video most fan translations wouldn't have done that better.
its pretty damm accurate but there's some spice missing imo. feels too cold.
It "works" but you're better off learning Japanese than relying on shit ass AI.
Death to all localizers.
AI (translation) keeps evolving at lightspeed.
By the time anyone 'learns' Japanse to a level sufficient enough to read games, AI has surpassed it by miles.
>B..But I'm already fluent in Japanese
Sucks to be you then, waisting time and energy on something like that.
TLDR: Frick learning japanese and just use AI translations.
I love the psx, but there was no Zelda-killer that generation. Nintendo got it incredibly right in the Adventure/Action RPG genre. And in the 3D platformer department with Mario 64 for that matter. Most other genres they got beat out by plenty of games on psx or even a few on Saturn. With Rail shooters being a toss up between the 64 and Saturn. Alundra was a good copy of A Link to the Past, and there were a couple other 2D things around that time floating around. But in 3D, OOT and MM are the best of their generation.
Psx had a game with a fox that was an ok rip-off, I forget the name but I’m sure someone knows it. If you count the Tomb Raiders or Soul Reaver they’re probably the closest to a great Zelda type game in 3D. King’s Field’s, Medievil. Neither hold up to OOT.
At least the PSX had better games in the genre than Saturn. Sure, there was Legend of Oasis, Magic Knight Rayearth and Shining Wisdom and Linkle Liver. But they were 2d. Dark Savior was ok but it’s not really 3D either. In 3D the Saturn had Virtua Hydlide (an incredibly bad game) and… Baroque? Tomb Raider 1? I guess? It’s a stretch to call either Zelda like. So… nothing worth playing at all?
>Psx had a game with a fox that was an ok rip-off, I forget the name but I’m sure someone knows it.
Kingsley's Adventure.
(OP)
Monkey hero, I actually thought it was better than A link to the past but it may have been the novelty of the new shiny graphics that helped.
?t=1641
I think it was Dark Cloud on PS2 where they really tried to be like Zelda.
Many people used to say Final Fantasy was the Zelda killer even though they are different in big areas. They were marketed to similar people.
Isn't Brave Fencer Musashi one of them too? I had never thought about it, but yeah I guess there's alot of them
I could never get into this game, the girl is ok but I find the guy's design utterly unpleasant. Fricking bald baby with ugly hat and pizza cutter sword.
>Game(s) is labled the Zelda quote-unquote "Killer"
>Ends up getting overshadowed by what it tried to kill
How ironic!
>i must compare every single action rpg to zelda because it's the only game my pathetic system has
What a sad existence
People do this because it's obviously the best. Zelda is amazingly better executed than anything competing against it.
threads of fate is basically the same quality, really games of that caliber are common.
Threads of Fate is trash. This is the first dungeon of the game and it's already reusing assets to this extent.
.
Imagine the first dungeon of OoT comprising of reused rooms over and over. You can go through the woods in less than a minute.
The arguments you have with yourself over things made up in your head aren't very interesting to strangers
just go have a melt down over the bouncer again at least that's entertaining
That really is from the first dungeon in the game though.
we know you post it all the time re4gay, get some new material instead of saving really bad looking youtube screenshots.
>last posted more than a year ago
>all the time
>shows up in every tangentially related thread
>is surprised he's recognized
dumb frick 45 year old with no kids or job.
Fricking destroyed. I don't understand the people that dedicate their lives to shitpost like this on an anonymous niche board.
The worst part is the atmosphere and aesthetics are the only things Threads has going for it. You could shit on everything else and no one would blink an eye
It's comical to me how obsessed Zeldatards are
i mean zelda is like one of the most popular games in existence for a reason
No, they do this because it's literally the only game they have
Very few games are actually like Zelda. Most games of the sortgo the Action RPG rout more than the Adventure which Zelda excels at. ARPGs are much easier to design than puzzle/exploration based games.
>action rpg
have a nice day brainless gay
yeah, tendies are pathetic and have to compare everything to their 3 N64 games because they don't touch anything
they literally thought BOTW invented open world genre, Mario invented 3D and Matroid Prime invented FPS KEK
>Tendie
Back to Ganker with you, scum.
>compare everything to their 3 N64 games
>because they don't touch anything (else)
Lol, it's the precise opposite. The reason people hold those games in such high regard comparatively is *because* they've played tons of other games and simply found them lacking compared to Mario/Zelda/Rare shooter/platformer due to how incredibly refined those games are.
Goldeneye is better than Doom/Quake/Thief
Zelda is better than all RPGs, period
Never reply to biased gays like her unless they can name several games in their respective genre that launched around those games that are supposedly better.
But you're right. It's not that 'tendo "did it first", it's that in most cases they did it better.
>because* they've played tons of other games
N64 had the smallest library at the time and the library is so garbage 99% of N64 gays kept speedrunning Tech Demo 64 out of boredom, which is why it became its own hobby for tendies.
>Goldeneye is better than Doom/Quake/Thief
GoledenEye is shit carried only by its splitscreen multiplayer mode
>Zelda is better
play more games
Always fun to see people like you seethe so hard over nothing really
The big issue with Brave Fencer Musashi is you can tell just how dang rushed the end of the game is.
Most of these games try to do their own thing within the 'Action Adventure' genre though (which is a positive)
The exception seems to be Alundra thats almost a literal clone of AlttP.
None of these would classify as 'Zelda Killers' but I did have fun with several of them.
Alundra is the greatest Hydlide clone of that generation. Best puzzles with light years of difference, far less reliant on the repetitive formula of just using the last item you picked and constantly entering menus. It has the best dungeons, the best world map, the best pacing, the best music...
If we're talking about 3d games. Well, Zelda OOT was heavily inspired by Tomb Raider to begin with. Soul Reaver is superior to Zelda in various aspects (better framerate, recorded dialogues, more interactive environments with more verticality, a more agile character that you can fully control, a world that feels far more unique than Zelda's typical generic fantasy...)
> greatest Hydlide clone
You've never played Hydlide you subhuman moron stop larping
>far less reliant on the repetitive formula of just using the last item you picked and constantly entering menus
Yeah. Instead, you get trial and error and mixed with random bullshit. I love having to hitting a switch to grab a falling barrel that'll either land in 1 of 4 spots at random before it shatters hitting the ground with only 4 - 5 tries, and then have to leave the room to reset the puzzle and repeat the process all over again this happens often. L-O-V-E IT!
Only Zelda-like I enjoy. I know it's PS2, don't get your panties in a bunch.
>OoT if it was on the SNES
>Zelda 2 if Capcom and Argonaut Games collaborated
Loved this game.
Stop pushing this meme.
I'm not joking.
Play the game.
Dragon View is indeed very good.
For me, it's Blood Omen.
Vae Victis!!!
Blood Omen would be infinitely better if they ditched the weird button mashy sword "combo" and just had each weapon lash out once. It's still a fricking cool game though, and everyone should play it.
not PS1 but my favorite "OoT killer" was hype the time quest
>time travel mechanics
>snappy 3D combat
>really excellent/goofy VAing
>zero mouse compatibility
talk about fricking sovl
i remember i figured out that if you accidentally hit that shitty windows key and tabbed out in the middle of a jump, when you tabbed back in it would blast you across the map and through walls sometimes, so i used to do that and try and get out of bounds or to different parts of the game i wasnt supposed to be in
Blood Omen
PS1 - Harry Potter 1,2
PC/PS2 - Hobbit
PS2 - Maximo 1,2
I very loved Harry and Hobbit at childhood. N64 wasnt popular in my country. And when I finally played 3ds Ocarina, I was dissapoint. I wanted more linear adventure with collactables. Its fine game, but this list is more fun adventures.
After some time I played Maximo and this exactly, what I want, 10 of 10.
Also, Hobbit 2003 is so underrated. First game I think, when I hear Adventure games, so colorful. So many collectables. I copleted it 4 times and never 100%.
Two games, one spinoff, set in a universe with a long expansive timeline, doesn't look like ass 20 years later. Basically zelda with guns, but better.
Back in the day the ps1 zelda killer was unironically FF7 somehow. Thanks to marketing the psx weebs would argue that it was the superior game. Even if you like jarpigs I'm not so sure.
ive never been subject to the marketing surrounding ff7 (thankfully) but in a way, i kind 'sort' of see it, if we're talking specifically about the older zelda games. hard to put into words what it is, but its definitely a competitor to the quality of older zelda titles. with oot, i don't really see it. there's barely any platforming either.
>PS1 games
>ending Zelda
lol pick one, Nintendo obsessor
There aren't any PS1 games that are similar to Zelda. Unless you think every game where you have a sword is "like Zelda".
It's a fun game calling it, among anything, a "zelda killer" is simply ridiculous.
I'm sorry but you can't compare a linear gauntlet game to the exploration and backtracking offered by any typical Zelda.
>killer
nobody gave a frick about Zelda outside N64 magazines until BOTW
>what is Toilet Princess
AIBlack folk get the rope
