PS2 FUBAR

Just had some fricked up shit happen to me. I was asleep when I got awoken by a horrible, high pitched whine. Took forever to figure out what it was, I was turning everything off. Then I finally just shut off the surge protectors. Narrowed it down to my PS2. When it is hooked into any power source, it has a horrible whine, and it was hot to the touch. I could smell burning as well. It wasn't even turned on, just plugged in. I pull out the SSD I have in it, and find weird cardboard-like shit on the drive tray, and looking inside I can see it within the PS2 as well.

This was a pristine PS2 that I just got a few weeks ago. Was working fine until now. Clearly can't plug it in again. Any idea of what happened? I'm guessing a capacitor actually exploded. I might try to take it apart later. Right now I have fricking tinnitus from the prolonged whining sound that it was emanating.

Could be a cap, you’d have to take it apart to see what’s gone. Could also be a transistor. Take a bump out of interest.
If it’s the PSU don’t frick with it, the caps can store hundreds of volts

Supposedly there is a place about five minutes from here which still repairs old consoles, I might just take it to them. I can do minor soldering shit, but I'm not going to frick with recapping it.

That shit is from the inside of a capacitor.

That looks like a blown capacitor. Open it up, clean it out. Might still work if you just give it a clean and replace the cap. It can cause damage elsewhere though.

capacitors "wine" or have a high pitch sequel when they leak; take a peek at the power board and see if any of them appear to be poped up, show signs of leaking from the top or the bottom. Given the age of the PS2 you'll probably see components like capacitors fatigue. There's sites that sell capacitor kits for entire systems (like the genesis) because the caps should honestly be replaced at this point if its an original board.

Was 100% a blown capacitor. PS2 PSUs are starting to show their age. Maybe consider getting a RePS2 PSU?

      >Maybe consider getting a RePS2 PSU?
That's probably the fix, anon. I'm going to try taking it apart and check the PSU board and see if that's what got fricked.

Anon this life hack works every time

Buy a new PS2 swap out the broken on then return it

Ohhh yeah. The influx capacitator rotated a little fast there. It seems the heat from the grinding shaved down the bezel lining along with the inline padding. I know exactly the feeling, OP. Just send me your PS2 and I'll fix it for free. It's on me, bro.

      Loading vidya.

Couldn't a base model PS2 hard drive do so? Or is it mainly for putting hacked games onto it (I know very little of the PS2 hacking scene)

I believe that I have found the culprit.

It's for loading ISOs, via FreeMCBoot and OPL.

It's almost guaranteed to be a blown cap on the power board. The power board can be removed via screws and replaced. They're $15 on ebay. The only danger of turning it on again is because of the power board. Therefore, there's no danger in replacing it and turning it on again. Should work as long as nothing was blown off of the mainboard.
Source: I've replaced bad PS2 power boards before.

FYI you get ZERO speed increase from using an SSD in a PS2. Speeds are still capped at what the IDE controller can handle (ie, standard IDE speeds). A 72000 rpm HDD will give you exactly the same loading speeds.

Yeah, but it's less prone to failure and quieter. Plus it's just a 2TB SSD, it's cheap.

I thought the ps2 could not read more than a single tb?

These days you can have it read exFAT drives in the hundreds of terabytes or some bullshit.
