Things are looking really dire for Xbox right now. How'd this happen and is it too late to turn it around?

I wouldn't have minded buying MW3 if they didn't so shamelessly phone the entire game in, because I genuinely enjoyed MW2. But they need to try a lot harder than that if they need my money. There are lots of other games to play.

I don't get it Xbox and PS don't have any games. Why don't gamers just get a PC?

        Anonymous

Because most people don't want to wait for PC ports for certain games and PC doesn't have enough recent and interesting exclusives for that tradeoff to be worthwhile.

        >why don't people that play games spend thousands on a shitposting machine?
Because I like playing games, and because Japan still makes games primarily around Nintendo and Sony hardware. The day they don't is the day I build a PC. Also, when there are no more timed exclusives or just games PCgays don't get in general, like Vanillaware games.

Trust me, they are not buying anything for the next 5 years. It's not clear when they will be off the hook from FTC after ABK, because FTC is still trying to revert the changes, buying anything else right now would only give more power to the FTC. In the interesting kind of way, this can go on forever, to keep MS from buying anyone.

        >It's not clear when they will be off the hook from FTC after ABK, because FTC is still trying to revert the changes
Their appeal didn't go well because the only argument the FTC had was "The PI being denied is unfair because the FTC should have the ability to tell a judge to grant a PI without question" and the two Trump appointed judges weren't particularly thrilled with the FTC's argument. There might be a slight dissent from the Biden appointed Judge but the FTC didn't make a good case when the bar to clear is way higher than the first preliminary injunction. And even in the unlikely scenario if they got it, the merger has gone through. Best they could do is come to a settlement with MS surrounding cloud (Because Sony eventually signed a contract for 10 years of COD on Playstation) and even then, likely just the same agreement the CMA got where MS gives the US cloud rights to Ubisoft.

I never said MS would buy anything now. But give it a year or two when the FTC blows over (Or more likely when Kahn is fired when the Trump admin gets in if Biden doesn't can her first) and they will strike again. Especially since the EU, UK and Brazil have effectively told Sony to go pound sand already.

I noticed an odd thing recently, I see a lot more people saying "Oh, I wish game X would come out on GamePass", or "If X isn't on GamePass then I am not playing it and I am not buying it either", it seems like people genuinely care more about GamePass than Xbox at this point, and Phil Spencer himself said that if GamePass won't generate enough numbers to sustain itself and be even more profitable by 2027 then they can exit the gaming business altogether, Xbox as a console is not a thing anymore, but they can't let it die literally, so they let it die metaphorically, while prioritizing GamePass.

      Anonymous

It's normal behavior, it's a paid subscription service, those who subscribe hope it comes out sooner or later in the pass. It's like when some people like a game but wait for Steam sales. It also happened with the Plus years ago before it lowered in quality.

      Anonymous

      >Phil Spencer himself said that if GamePass won't generate enough numbers to sustain itself and be even more profitable by 2027 then they can exit the gaming business altogeth
No he didn't. He said within a worst case scenario if numbers stayed flat from 2020 on then they would exit by 2027 which meant they had to consider new strategies. On top of that, that email came from months before they had bought Bethesda, never mind Activision so they were talking from the position of the then current XGS studio set up. That all changed when they got Bethesda. Now it's all changed again now that they have Activision.

Hell today the guy that leaked the PS5 Pro said that MS were instead looking at a next gen SKU for 2026/27 instead of doing a Series X revision. They aren't exiting the business.

Stadia the writing was on the wall because of massive staff departures and reports of projects being cancelled including the Kojima collaboration. Even Sega had a ton of departures and cancelled projects because they were flat broke and couldn't afford to produce the console any more.

Microsoft, there's none of that. They just spent $80 billion dollars on content and development studios. If anything its the opposite and they are investing in a longer run

I truly believe the Xbox would sell way more consoles if it didn't have such a moronic naming convention. Nobody knows what the frick an Xbox series X is versus and Xbox One X or an Xbox One Series S or whatever the frick. If I'm a some normie soccer mom and I want the latest console for my kid I'm just going to buy the PS5 because it's the latest one. I have no clue which Xbox is new and I fricking own an Xbox myself

Europe has some of the absolute worst tastes in games, so this isn't high praise. 90% of what gets played is just cod and fifa over and over. Is it any wonder that the place with the worst tastes in games is drawn to the company with the worst consoles?

Xbox consoles aren't available in most of Europe because MS has literally just given up on those countries for some reason
Even in the countries that Xbox consoles are sold in, the level of support varies wildly. For example physical games might not be widely available compared to Nintendo and PlayStation games.
Xbox also spends nearly nothing on marketing. PlayStation and Nintendo both put out shit like bus stop ads, TV ads etc and their products are proudly displayed on store shelves, their products are hot items during sales etc.

Xbox still looks pathetic but I guess MS will deeply cut XSX/XSS price to defend US market.

The PlayStation 5 was the best-selling console in the US in November 2023 in terms of units sold and dollar sales, according to figures from Circana (formerly The NPD Group). Circana includes the dates for the four week period of October 29 to November 25.

2023 year-to-date the PlayStation 5 is the best-selling console in terms of both units sold and dollar sales.
The Nintendo Switch comes in second place in both units sold and dollar sales, while the Xbox Series X|S comes in third place.

"U.S. consumer spending on video game content, hardware and accessories fell 7% when compared to a year ago, to $5.9 billion," said Circana Executive Director and Video Game Industry Analyst Mat Piscatella. "The decline was driven by a 24% drop in hardware spending and a 3% dip in content."

Piscatella added, "November video game content spending dropped 3% when compared to a year ago, to $4.6 billion. An 11% decline in Console & Portable Content spending was partially offset by 3% growth across each of the Mobile, Subscription, and 'PC, Cloud & Non-Console VR' Content segments.”
