        Anonymous

They want all of their own games to be big blockbusters to give the console a sense of prestige. And since these things take a decade to make they can only do a couple of them per gen. They would never let themselves diversify their output with lesser "aa" games that could be made in a year, yuck. You need to buy a nintendo console if you want games. The PS5 is for displaying next to the tv like an ugly vase.

        >ps4 pro didn't improve performance and in some cases even made it worse
Wait, really? Mine was a PS4 Slim and did a lot of noise when playing SW:FO so I almost bought a Pro, but it really isn't worthy?

      Anonymous

There are two major assumptions about the necessity of the pro so far (IF it will sell):
      - satisfy the core userbase by guaranteeing 60fps in every game, especially if new games might go back to 30fps (like Dragon's Dogma 2, GTA6 might be 30 too)
      - project a halo effect on the PS5 (consoles are still stronk, PS is the premium gaming experience)

Basically it ultimately boils down to Sony (and really everyone else) hoping GTA6 will explode and saves the dwindling console (all console) sales. If GTA6 won't move the needle substantially (it can be successful and not sell systems) then the entire console industry is beyond fricked up and will force everyone to change strategies.

        Anonymous

They could guarantee 60 fps in every game if the simply had a mandate saying you needed to hit 1080p 60 as a minimum quality standard before being allowed on the store. All a pro does is let them target 30 fps with a slight resolution bump so instead of 720p it'll be 900p. The marketing may revolve around lies of better performance, but that's not how game development works.

          >a mandate saying you needed to hit 1080p 60 as a minimum quality standard before being allowed on the store.
That would be nice. Modern hardware is powerful enough for it.

            Anonymous

Devs are to blame, not hardware. As game's director said, FF16 could come out on PS4 if they had spent more time. 720p was unacceptable even on PS4.

            [...]
PS4 Pro was at least necessary to support 4K TVs properly.
PS5 Pro won't be able to target native 4K either. At this point it would be a better choice to improve on temporal upscaling technologies than release new hardware.

PS5 Pro doesn't make sense. FSR2 made it redundant.
If PS4 Pro is anything to go by, games won't just receive 60 fps modes exclusive to Pro. At best they'll get more stable framerate and use higher quality FSR2 mode.

Not to mention there are barely any 9th gen only games and they're already talking about next gen.
It would be glorified PS4 Pro Pro Pro.

PS5's GPU was gimped because of Sony's penny pinching ¯_(ツ)_/¯
RDNA 2 was designed around the bandwidth provided by the Infinity Cache (L3 cache), but Sony didn't include any L3 cache for the GPU on the PS5.
The result? A lot less bandwidth for the streaming processors of the GPU, less bandwidth means lower game render resolution.

              Anonymous

Rdna 2 relied heavily on cache because amd was penny pinching on bus width a problem the PS5 doesn't have. You are literally getting things backwards.

                Anonymous

                >bus width
The bus is assigned by the quantity of memory.
GDDR6 is still using an order of x32 bits per package, the PS5 GPU, aka RX 6700 only has a 160-bit because it has 5 GDDR6 packages of 16Gb each one, 5*32=160bits, 16Gb*5=10GB of VRAM.
The PS5 has a bus of 256-bit because it has 16GB of GDDR6, and you have to remember that the CPU also needs to be feed off these bus, desktop and mobile ryzen has two 64-bit channels for a total of 128-bit, the PS5's GPU is bandwidth starved as frick.

                Let me explain better:
The RX 6700, aka PS5 GPU, only had a 160-bit bus because of the 10GB of VRAM, not because AMD was penny pinching bandwidth, this GPU also has 80MB of L3 cache, to provide even more bandwidth for instructions.
The PS5 256-bit bus has to feed what is basically a Ryzen 3700X plus a RX 6700, and this RX 6700 doesn't even have the L3 to help it.
                Sony penny pinched, not AMD.

                Anonymous

It only had 10gb of vram because amd was penny pinching on buswidth throughout the lineup. It could've had 16 had they not. You aren't proving anything with your example.

All hardware has been powerful enough. If you want to make games run at 60 FPS, you can target that, it's just a matter of optimization and what you are willing to give up in exchange. Devs don't target 60 FPS though, it's not a priority for them because customers don't decide to buy a game or not based on that.

No. This is cope. A java-based turn-based RPG will still run awfully on a PC that can easily run most games at a consistent 1080p and 60 FPS. It's ridiculous how some people think that such a standard is unrealistic.

            >The PS4Pro allowed 60fps in almost every game (albeit on a lower res),
            it didn't lol
Barely any game got 60 fps modes exclusive to PS4 Pro, because the CPU was barely an improvement over base PS4, while it was already weak enough.
Even modded Bloodborne at 720p drops to 30s fps when streaming in the new level area.

CPUs in current gen consoles are actually good. If a PS5 game can't run at 60 fps, PS5 Pro won't be able to do it either, since as far as it comes to GPU bottleneck, you can just lower the resolution to 720p like devs already do.

        >satisfy the core userbase by guaranteeing 60fps in every game
That is not how this shit works. If a dev doesn't optimize their game to run at 60 fps right now, throwing more power at them won't make them start optimizing for 60 fps. They will just do an even worse job and run at the same shitty, uneven framerate.

        >satisfy the core userbase by guaranteeing 60fps in every game

Even RE4make released just last year was 900p.
It was Xbone that used 720p more often.

9th gen consoles legit use lower resolution more often than PS4.

Yeah, ultra performance mode looks like trash, however there are better ways of handling upscaling. Instead use lower output resolution, while maintaining higher upscaling quality. Lowering output to 1800p is enough to make significant performance gains without damaging the image quality into a blurry mess. Even 1620p is fine.
