Tactics Ogre defined the TRPG genre, as we know it, and Disgaea 2 perfected it. 3 and later all threw in way too much garbage and nonsense, Disgaea 2 was perfect.
well Ogre Battle is a song by Queen about battles in a fantasy setting. In the Ogre Battle series the Ogres are long gone, but Ogre is also a metaphor for evil
SNES is the original
PSX is SNES but is strangely slower for whatever reason
Saturn is SNES with voice acting
PSP is a complete overhaul
Reborn is them trying to reconcile the SNES and PSP version into a single game with mixed results.
but why didn't they make a sequel?
it's so odd to have releases like that in the 4th gen and no sequels
is there some once in a life time dreamteam behind it like Chrono Trigger?
PSP version tries to cut down on grinding by replacing character levels with universal class levels, but that was soulless so they reverted it in Reborn.

Universal class levels are worse because it causes MORE grinding instead of less. The system also encouraged nonsense where you were better off using less classes because not only would you level up faster, but it would also make your characters stronger due to a quirk of the stat system.
>PSP version tries to cut down on grinding
Absolutely fricking wrong. It's exactly the opposite, it tries its best to maximize grinding and shared class leveling is the worst part of that (there are many more). Reborn removed it but introduced so much comparable cancer that it's basically a different flavor of shit except with much less potential for unfricking/modding. The PSP version (LUCT) at least can be fixed by cheats to some degree; Reborn - not so much.
Grinding was never a problem on SNES because you could do practice mode or whatever it's called, and the XP gains would count. So you could just set up half your army to battle the other half, go take a shit for 15 minutes or whatever, and come back to leveled up characters. You practically HAVE to do this, there is no way to level up properly from battle to battle after about the fifth battle or so.
>That IS grinding
No because you can set the computer to control both sides. The machine does the grinding by itself. And you can't do this in the PSP version.
That's what completely killed the PSP remake for me. I like recruiting different monsters and units, but by even mid game it was becoming a horrible chore to then level them up. The last thing I actually remember doing in this version was finally finding Lizardmen and recruiting a couple then remembering that my whole team was in their mid 30's and these guys who were around that lev when I got them are now reverted to level 1. So if I want to use them in my party I now have to stop and grind them up in random battles that will take several hours of boredom. So I just dropped it and never went back. I can't do games that are that massive time wasters anymore.
first of all not retro gay ass, second of all psp is worse version since doesn't add anything at all in content or story or lore.
yes snes and psp have the worse controls of all because of the fricking 4 directional pad yet it could have added something better or deepening the lore yet nothing and kinda looks similar to snes despite having the power of a ps2.
Absolutely, FFT is almost like a cramped and dumbed-down TO. You'd think going to the Playstation would have encouraged them to max out the autism even more but I think they wanted to streamline it to include more potential players.
I would say sort of yes sort of no. If you really liked FFT then you will like them, but in my experience as kinda broken as it is, FFT is actually best of the lot. Knight of Lodis especially has some glaring issues like every buff and debuff in the game being 11% across the board so there's never any reason for a wind mage for example to ever use any non-wind spell. Still worth it if you really liked Tactics but don't expect something to best ut.
>Top trpg
Nah that's the psx version of ff tactics. Much better story. IMHO Langrisser and its spiritual successor/pseudo-sequel Growlanser are better than both, but nobody but me plays those
Story and characters in all 3 cases, larger battlefields with more units and more tactical combat for Langrisser, multiple paths and endings for both Langrisser and Growlanser with romance options for the Chinese cartoon coomers
Now post the real image
tactics ogre is an autism slog nobody with a life would play. shining force is better.
Tactics Ogre defined the TRPG genre, as we know it, and Disgaea 2 perfected it. 3 and later all threw in way too much garbage and nonsense, Disgaea 2 was perfect.
>disgaea
rofllllll.
You mean X-COM. And XCOM Enemy Unknown perfected it.
>the shitty remake that's clearly worse than the original game it's based on perfected it
>remake that's clearly better than the original game it's based on perfected it
Yes
And I know you're going to pull the "but more numbers = betters"
I mean why not go back to Pools of Radiance?
>autism bad
a bold statement around these parts
SNES and Reborn are better. PSP is just barely passable if you install One Vision.
>sony exclusive release is bad
surprise surprise
games stuck on their consoles are always inferior, they only get better when they go multiplat
langrisser shits on any matsturdo game from meteoric heights.
I'll take the Saturn port with fan translation, personally.
Extremely based take. I like Matsuno's absurdity in OB, TO, and VS but nothing else. Langrisser is far more intuitive.
>tactics ogre
>NO OGRES
well Ogre Battle is a song by Queen about battles in a fantasy setting. In the Ogre Battle series the Ogres are long gone, but Ogre is also a metaphor for evil
Vagrant Story has Ogres deep in the game and they're pretty tough
>mfw meet ogres unprepared
Speaking of tactics ogre, what is the difference between the SNES, PS1 and PSP version.
SNES is the original
PSX is SNES but is strangely slower for whatever reason
Saturn is SNES with voice acting
PSP is a complete overhaul
Reborn is them trying to reconcile the SNES and PSP version into a single game with mixed results.
why re-release the same game 5 times?
Money
but why didn't they make a sequel?
it's so odd to have releases like that in the 4th gen and no sequels
is there some once in a life time dreamteam behind it like Chrono Trigger?
Reborn is better if only for the crafting changes.
Matsuno probably doesn't care anymore and the series isn't popular enough.
There's a sequel on gba
Because it's worth it.
The game is huge and is high quality. So why not.
>not loving both
gay.
PSP version tries to cut down on grinding by replacing character levels with universal class levels, but that was soulless so they reverted it in Reborn.
>soulless
Everyone who uses terms like this are morons so I guess I'll assume the PSP version is definitive. Thanks.

That IS grinding, and you do the exact same thing in the PSP-version.

Should I play these games if I really enjoyed FFT? I always thought I hated tactics games but I was kind of surprised how into FFT I got.

I play those.

What about Person of Lordly Character on the N64? How does that compare?
