Honestly surprised they didn’t go to Gabe, hat in hand. Beg him for a port. Offer to do all the work yourselves.

PCVR is dying just as much as this piece of shit. VR in general was a fad and it will pass very soon, especially after the failure of the Vision Pro

Mobile VR is the only platform that has a chance for mainstream popularity. No casual is building a $2k PC for VR, but they'll try out a standalone unit for $400. Still think it will die before it gets big enough though. PCVR has no games, is too inaccessible, and only appeals to turbospergs.

Yeah more games than PSVR2, which is a low bar as that headset literally has like 2 games. Most PCVR games are shovelware trash and it's been held up by mods for like 3 years at this point. I don't know how any reasonable person could look at the current state of PCVR releases and think it's thriving unless your entire social circle comes from VR chat. Also, yeah Quest 2 is affordable but it's the PC that's expensive dipshit

I literally ran VR games on my 1080 8700k set up dumbass. You dont need a super expensive PC to set up a fricking quest 2, it downsamples games to begin with.
                >which is a low bar as that headset literally has like 2 games
It has 100 games, and Steam has 7,000

                Anonymous

Of those 7,000 games, how many of those are good?

Also, of the casual audience, what percentage do you think have a computer with a 1080 level GPU? It's not many. Most people just get an Xbox or a PS5 and play 3 big AAA games a year and CoD. VR has to appeal to those people if it wants to take off. PCVR is not the route to appeal to them.

                >It's not many
3060 is one of the most popular cards on Steam and it's right above a 1080.
                > Most people just get an Xbox or a PS5
Steam literally has more MAU than both those consoles by far.
                > VR has to appeal to those people if it wants to take off.
No it doesnt because it has it's own audience, which is growing on Steam btw.
                >PCVR isn't the route to appeal to them
It's more of a route than console VR, which is limited, expensive, and appeals to literally nobody as PS5 and series x homosexuals only play fifa and fortnite

Nobody is paying $1k to play VR, the audience is people who already have a PC and the price of entry for them is $300 (the price of a decent monitor).

People without a PC are either those who do not play videogames or normalgays who play Fifa.
Neither of them are a relevant audience for VR in general, because the first grouo will be vomiting all day and the second will think it's nerd shit.

sony's fault for not allowing PCVR out of the box and they dropped the ball on the screen inside, it makes people dizzy by the way they flicker the screen
      they sealed their fate

even the PS5 has no games

      >no one wants to make vr games because they don't sell
      >no one buys vr because it has no games
      It's a vicious cycle.

as headsets get better and cheaper, there will be more people owning vr, and devs will start making games for them
even sakurai wanted to make a VR game, but he thought it was too niche, so he couldn't devote a large budget to it

      >As author Blake J. Harris reports, writing about the founding of Oculus in his book "The History Of The Future," there was almost a collaboration with Sakurai.
      >Luckey and Sakurai would have met in Tokyo in 2015. The Oculus CEO at the time reportedly offered Sakurai work on a VR game with complete creative control and generous pay. Ultimately, however, the star developer declined. He would give his all in such a project, but the target group for Oculus was simply too small, which could limit the game's distribution.
      https://mixed-news.com/en/smash-brothers-creator-turned-down-oculus-offer/

but it's fine, we're probably only 3-5 years away from a nintendo vr headset and sakurai will get to make a vr game

      did alyx sell?

only 25% of people who own alyx have finished it
also I owned alyx for quite a long time before I could get a VR headset, ALVR and enough space to actually play it, I imagine some people are in a similar position

it would be nice if valve capitalized on this and made more vr game and actually saved vr, no other company is gonna invest

they most certainly are, but they like to take time, and they're still designing and building out the PCVR ecosystem at the same time

My Valve Index just came in the mail yesterday. What are some good gaems? I bought Beat Saber and Rez and downloaded the VR mod for Deep Rock Galactic. Dancing to anime songs in Beat Saber is honestly pretty fun.
Also the headset makes me feel like I need glasses, objects that are really close and things that are really far away are a little blurry. People online say it's because of the resolution but it genuinely feels like an astigmatism, as if my eyes aren't focusing right. Are my settings wonky or do I just have to get used to it?

It's called the Vergence-Accomodation Conflict. Currently, almost all vr headsets have some form of it because of reprojection tbh.

        Anonymous

I heard about the term but didn't look into it closely enough.
        >Closing one eye is one method for focusing on a nearby virtual object, if the user is having problems. With one eye closed, there is no conflict between vergence and the required accommodation.
Well frick me sideways, I going to try that to see if the distant object blurriness goes away. I swear it sometimes worse and this shit would explain it.

you need to set the correct distances from your eyes in 3 ways. the slider which moves them in and out, the knob that moves them forward and back, and the top strap which lets the whole headset go up and down on your head, which changes where your eyes are relative to the lenses
          [...]
it only doesnt get many games because the videogame industry is about profit now instead of being as innovative as it used to be

ill never get totally bored of race and flight sims anyway

. It's more likely than not an IPD issue, sweet spot issue etc. The VAC just adds to the issue, and will exist in most headsets until we get varifocal lenses.

First headset was before Alyx dropped and VR was still fresh. Second headset, Index, got for Alyx and as an upgrade over the first. Quest 2 got as a gift and almost never use. There was a decent clip of okay games at the beginning, but PCVR gets few compelling new releases at this point and the novelty has faded.

The problem is that VR is not for poorgays.
So the typical poorgay that has to pick one platform and stick with it can’t afford such things. This applies equally to the standard PCpoors of Ganker, which is why VR is a “meme”, as that’s code for “I can’t afford it”.

I have owned 2 PCVR headsets and a Quest 2 and I'm firmly in the "it's a meme" camp. Would never buy another barring massive investment in big games (this will never happen)

Maybe you should get better at managing expectations.
The available software isn’t a mystery. What’s there is what’s there.
Which sort of begs the question as to why you bought multiple hardware units. Did you think magic would happen?

some wipe was trying to say with the new wifi7 it will have wired visual quality without the wires. sounded like complete marketing, but is it viable to send native video over wireless? google says 7 can do like 40 gb/s

          Anonymous

doesn't matter about the data over wifi. it's the latency of the decoding and encoding which is the issue. The higher the image quality you need to reconstruct the longer it takes to do. You can pump the network bitrate up to 900mbps in Oculus Tool but the headset falls apart , loses audio and lag goes to 90ms

            Anonymous

that's why I said native. if you cut out the coding middle man what's the issue?

              Anonymous

Video over a wireless protocol requires encoding from a video card, and decoding on the headset. If you want native ask Zuck to include a dp port and use a cable.

                Anonymous

yeah I figured it wasn't as simple as shooting the video at the headset. zuck already said no to the d. any theoretical breakthroughs for good wireless visuals?

                Anonymous

In terms of wireless, I mean the wifi 7 standard is rated for up to 40 gbps, but I don't think real world applications will be that fast. Maybe wigig 2 but that's pretty dead in the water atm. And sadly the headset still needs to be able to decompress to image quickly enough for it to be useful.

          Anonymous

Maybe if it has AV1 decoding? But I don't know if the XR2 gen 2 supports that, plus you'd need a care to do the encoding.

PSVR2. best VR headset you can buy with a couple of great games but now is getting infested with shit Quest 2 ports. Limited only by PS5 hardware.

Making a VR headset that doesn't work with PC is the stupidest thing ever.

VR headsets are not consumer friendly products, they are too expensive yet to be widely adopted like consoles, on top of that for the picture related you need to own a console, it doesn't make much sense to spend this amount of money just to use a VR headset, unless you either in debt or 1%.

The reason VR failed has nothing to do with the technology itself. VR failed because it is mainly useful as a social platform (hence why, at the peak of VR's popularity, all anyone played was VRchat) and any technologically-inclined social platform like VR is parasitized by mentally ill people. Eg:

    - furries
    - homosexuals
    - transgenders
    - pedophiles
    - etc.

These creatures congregate in any social setting that has to do with technology, because they can only exist in a setting where physical violence against them (the natural public response to their behavior) is not possible. VR has already acquired the stink of transgenderism. It won't recover

Don't even try to pretend the proportion of mentally ill alphabet people is remotely the same here as it is in VR

Why buy this, a limited VR system with low specs, when you can get a valve index or HTC which do more, are better, and have games? Heck even outside of games, PC VR lets you go deep into porn which is its own selling point the PSVR doesnt have

My major gripe with sony is if they really wanted VR to succeed, we need availability, affordability and of course, games. Making this playstation exclusive is moronic and is the literal exact opposite of what the industry needed. Had PSVR worked on PC, and had sony allowed PCVR to work on playstation, thered be more VR players, thus more incentive to have developers to make games for it, snowballing it.

A new industry like VR is a seed, in the early days you need to nurture and babysit it to grow into something bigger. Only once it produces fruit and seeds can you start walling off your corners and fighting over turf.
Also kek at releasing a fricking sequel to a headset no one bought, so the few who bought a PSVR1 feel gypped and the people who would buy a PSVR2 are going to wait for PSVR3+
    Sony, once again, is moronic.

Big issue with VR right now is how fragmented the market is for a new growing medium, and psvr2 ain't helping. Quest headsets with their exclusives, Apples thing is definetly a walled garden.
    WMR needs propriertary drivers.
