I've been getting into QC these last couple of days and have been trying out the air strafing characters. Is the skater or the lizard considered better?
It depends...
Sorlag is slower while having a better base stack, but her active ability is pretty versatile and allows you to track enemies behind walls.
While Anarki being faster with a small base stack has an active that heals and makes him move even faster, he should have a smaller hitbox too.

never got open sourced. servers can support 240 tick rate though. it had a rough launch, took like a year for it to be playable but damage was done already. the people left playing are kind of scrubby.

You know having good, community built clients isn't exclusive to Quake 3, right? Q1 and Q2's community clients mog the shit out of the KEX crap that was released, didn't stop them from releasing it.
It's more of a shittier Q3 but one that's easier to install (not that Q3 is hard to install, but people are really fricking lazy and copying pak files is too much to ask, so it does make a difference) and has saner defaults.

Apparently they dropped equ8 and switched to EAC at some point, and some people reported being able to play it online on Linux. I haven't tested it myself since I don't think it's worth the effort to play shitty gamemodes with the five people who still play it and I'd rather just play QL instead, but I'll probably look into it when it comes out on Steam since it'll have a short spike in players then.

IIRC, it's got the auto-jump from Xonotic, the forward dash from Warsow, there's these alt-fire grenades that aren't used in the majority of modes, and it's one of the ones where you don't need to port forward to set up a lobby/server. You can also put stickers on your dude's face, but it's fricked up cuz they removed all the stickers you used to get for free in the beta and then put them in the battle pass or whatever. That's about it.
Basically, it just stood out because it was supposed to be quicker to get up and get playing, acting as a good entrypoint for players of any skill level, and it was going to get a guaranteed X years of development. Then instead, it launched on the EGS before Legendary/Heroic became a thing to bypass it (and even then people don't use those often), and the matchmaking rotation barely featured any of the casual modes and instead focused on stuff like duels and instagib.

In all fairness, sending people after a third-party sourceport to play Q3A best is something that'll ruffle feathers regardless. Maybe if they bundled quake3e in with it, then it'd all be kosher, but I assume the reason they haven't is because they do want to funnel people into paying for Quake Live or going into the Quack Hampions MTX pit

They could have done better than they did with what they made but there were a number of issues on launch that were ongoing which made things harder than they needed to be.

QW is S for TDM and something else for duel. I would say that for the non-quake player QW is probably the best overall due to the fast ttk - they will get kills regardless. Maybe CPMA if they are playing with other new players.

I like CPMA's tweaks and additions, but I absolutely loathe Duel and the consequences it's had for the Arena FPS genre at large, so I personally wouldn't rate it anywhere above B just for how much it's pissed into the water supply. There's a lot of good singleplayer maps for the original Quake, but are there any good maps that specifically focus on co-op? Like ones where the players have to work together to progress through the level rather than just having extra people with more firepower?
I doubt they exist, as Quake's mechanics mean you can't really do much for co-op. You can't even stand on each other's heads to boost each other up. Most that could probably be done is stuff like timed switches, or maybe something where you gotta stem monsters from flooding into the arena the other player is fighting in so he doesn't become overwhelmed.
I played a lot of quake 1/2 remaster/live/champions casually over the years and i do enjoy these games. But i also gotta say comp 6s tf2 was better. Make 6s tf2 slighty faster and it would be the greatest arena shooter of all time. Even solider mge is more enjoyable than quake duel homosexualry, don’t @ me.

Is there a single quake III server with actual players instead of the Black personhomosexual bots that pretend to be players? If I wanted solo vs bots I'd play singleplayer, and I don't have to bother with ping that scenario.
I think you are kind of forced to do pickup games through Discords for Q3, or just find servers on QL. That being said, I wonder why those bot servers are even still up in the first place. Just seems like a waste to host a server like that.
Maybe they just wanted the server to permanently offer 12p FFA and bots get kicked on player join, although I wouldn't know if Q3 has a min_players svar because I've never hosted it. In either case, hosting a Q3 server for free and in the background is super easy, so no skin off their nose.

Try not putting yourself into situations where the netcode could prove to be a major factor in the outcome.
