dunno if it was true, but someone on the Steam forum said Nightdive was planning to add it in an update.
This is from 2 months ago so they had access to working on the remaster the entire time. I wouldn't be surprised if the work on the PSX campaign is entirely why a couple of its enemies were sprinkled in the base game, albeit without enhanced models.
It's incredible how much a bit of lighting can change the atmosphere.
I know it was due to limitations but I do prefer the more linear apporach of the ps1 version.
PSX Q2 was effectively a truncated port of the PC version with a new enemy and new mini-boss, using Ground Zero cutscenes for some reason. N64 Q2 was running on the Q1 engine and effectively a new game using Q2 assets, loosely recreated gameplay and some bits of level design. There still isn't really an answer for why PSX and N64 share an intro stage.
me too, we didnt have quake on pc growing up so i literally found out when i went o play it during all the hype this week that the pc version was different
you think consoles are relatively weak today in compared to dedicated PC then the power level difference was ridicilous in the era of rapidly advancing hardware.
Thus different campaigns to accomodate what the different systems could physically handle
people complained about Q1's N64 port not being different enough, so they did it with the sequel. the trend back then was for ports to not just be 1:1 but have their own benefits. Duke 64 is another example.
Quake 1 is super overrated.
Romero also didn't do shit, he spent most of his time playing deathmatch instead of working, that's why Carmack fired his ass.
Quake 3 Arena is one of the very few perfect games, and clearly the best multiplayer FPS of all times but the reality is that all 3 games where great.
You don't need to shit on some games to praise others.
Finally beat the main campaign of Q2 on the new remaster. I had forgotten how much the last unit pissed me off when playing. Now I need to go through Ground Zero, DoM, and 64.
Remaster is probably the definitive way to play Q2 thanks to all the AI changes. Only complaints are the Berzerkers AOE being way too big and the rail gun being nerfed.
I think enemies are just a little too good at dodging rockets too. I mostly just gravitate toward the super shotgun and rapid-fire weapons while spamming the grenade launcher around corners.
The game will probably be more fun without nightmare's health increase.
I had to use it a couple times in Ground Zero. There were a lot of unintuitive backtracking segments and little spots on the wall I needed to shoot to progress.
So I never actually played the Q1 remaster. How is it? I've heard mixed things about. Main thing that stopped me from playing it the first time was I couldn't figure out how to play it with QSS and still get the new mappack without having to download it manually.
It's mostly fine. Launched with weird shit like inexplicably changing player movement speeds, and if you're super into Q1 there's odd physics changes that will just totally throw you off. But if you want the campaign, expansions and some extra maps plus Quake 64 all in one place, or to dick around a bit for fun with the crossplay multiplayer compatible with old WinQuake servers (I think, can't remember what it was compatible with), then it's totally fine. You want Arcane Dimensions and the mapjam stuff people have been cooking up on their own, though, you'll need a source port.
Quake 2 Remaster is generally better than Q1R for overall consistency at launch, but it's also pretty much a director's cut and overhaul, so if you're into pure Q2, it may really throw you off.

They made a complete U turn on the difficulty tweaking. Quake 1 remaster removed fast monsters and simply made you squishy, while Quake 2 makes the monsters more reactive than they have ever been.
Those reactant enemies make Q264 a b***h and a half at least. The original devs clearly thought Iron Maidens, Gladiators, Gunners and Flyers everywhere was a real good way to make the halfway point to the end more difficult, but now that they're hyper-aggressive, can delay projectile attacks to frick with you, or attack on the go like the Maiden's marching rocket shots, every other room or corner is a nasty encounter.

The latter is clearly the right choice.
I literally never knew the little flying drones had a melee attack until I played the remaster. It seems to prioritize getting into your face above all else now which can frick you up if in tighter areas or using explosives.
I didn't notice any significant tweak to the maidens. It's the basic units that are now absolute player rapists. I specifically remember a trap room in Q264 with three berserkers eager to push you into a corner.
They have a habit of march attacking on me if I leave them alive too long. The fricking Gunners though, I've had them and Tanks actually delay their explosives a bit just to hope I poke my head back out, and they have a habit of placing explosives that miss at chokepoints even if it's via firing at the wall I'm behind.
The Gunners also can vary the arc of their grenades on the fly based on your directional movement. They've gone from easy pickings to absolute demons if you leave them alone for too long, god forbid they're above you.
Does Quake 4 really need a remaster? It's already a modern-esque game that was even modified on Steam after Bethesda acquired it.
A Q3 remaster would be nice, but I can't imagine how they would meaningfully add to it.
Porting QL to Kex would remove some framerate dependent physics bugs and uncap the render entirely-- Which would be nice. Otherwise the game is airtight.
Crossplay would be neat, as would a nice gyro implementation. In my dreams, Nightdive would give Q3A the single player campaign it was sorely missing at launch. They've already proved they can make a competent episode in the Q1 and 2 remasters, after all. Make the combatants unique endbosses, I dunno.
Honestly I doubt Q3A/QL would ever get a campaign of that sort. The effort to produce story, setpieces, and new AI for enemies to fight could go towards other remasters like the Turok 3 this one hints to, and otherwise to a new Quake game entirely.
>They've already proved they can make a competent episode in the Q1 and 2 remasters,
The new episodes are Machine Games though.
And honestly at that point you might as well just let them do something wholesale after Indiana Jones and Wolf 3 rather than try to staple it to Quake 3. Make the Quake 1/2 crossover in Quake 2 count for something.

If they keep up with the lore they've set up in the Machine expansions, they might just outright retcon Q4 in exchange whatever new game they end up making.
Honestly Q4 doesn't really need retconning. It fricks over the Strogg and GDF designs, but it also brought back the Makron from the dead inexplicably just like the Reckoning and Call from the Machine, and ultimately it just breaks the Strogg hivemind by destroying the Nexus. If the next Quake game was some multidimensional clusterfrickery, Kane's mission doesn't really affect much of anything major for using Strogg as an enemy, to the point that the game ended with implying there was more fighting to do nigh-immediately.
Playing quake 1 remaster on xbox currently as these 2 are on gamepass. Do I want texture filtering on or off? I can't tell a difference but I usually leave it off for remasters
I was never a Quake guy, always Unreal Tournament for me.
So I played Quake 2 for the first time with this remaster. I liked it. It's missing something, but still very good.
My only bad experience was when I started a coop lobby and a zoomer joined my game who didn't know how to play, or do anything, and was asking moronic questions like "can you crouch in this game?"
I had a pretty wholesome time in tf2 mid-match one time, teaching an enemy soldier on the other team how to rocket jump. He was so grateful, think he was a kid but could've been a pajeet
>shoot enemy with super shotgun >he falls on his butt >wait for the slow ass pumping animation and shoot him again >hide behind cover so you don't get hit by the hitscan miniguns of him and every other enemy in the room >pop out and shoot him again
Repeat 10000 times and that's Quake 2
Every shooter has a workhorse you rely on for most of it. It's either the super shotgun or the chaingun since ammo for both are everywhere. Thankfully grenades and energy cells aren't too rare either though.
>boring maps >bulletsponge enemies >uninspired aesthetic and enemy design >repetitive music >zero atmosphere
Anyone who genuinely believes Quake 2 is better than 1 is a contrarian homosexual, no different than the morons that parrot about Dark Souls 2 being a good game
I wish they included the PS1 campaign.
dunno if it was true, but someone on the Steam forum said Nightdive was planning to add it in an update.
It might be true, they added stuff to the Quake remaster after release

Didn't make it in time for QA. It'll either be added in an update or released on github at a later date.
Isnt the same as Quake 2 64?

Why does Quake 2 have a whole different campaign for PC, PS1, and N64? Might as well throw in PS1 too I hope.
It was the 90s
Different constraints, so why sell an inferior version when you can sell a unique side game.
Ah the 90s.

Doesn't the PS1 version of Q2 just share the same levels as the N64 version
No
It feels like the first real Quake game, it's more in line with later entries.
Q3 was the only good quake
horrible taste
Q1 and ETQW exist
Ureal Torunement mogs q3
While really good, it still just goes in the iD era of "post-Romero tech demos". Will never to come close to innovating like the first Quake did
Quake 1 is super overrated.
Romero also didn't do shit, he spent most of his time playing deathmatch instead of working, that's why Carmack fired his ass.
Good taste, seethe 1 and 2ers
>implying
did you not have friends anon quake 64 was amazing & scary as heck when you were 12 years old........
Quake 3 Arena is one of the very few perfect games, and clearly the best multiplayer FPS of all times but the reality is that all 3 games where great.

Yeah, grenades too. The little side step a lot of the enemies do whenever you're using the explosive weapons is the most annoying shit.
Yeah, I don't even bother trying to land directs with the grenades. I just spam them into doors and hallways.
The Call of the Machine campaign is pretty cool.
Quake 1 is absolutely fricking garbage so that’s a low bar
wow they made the soulless forced soul game better than the original soulful game?
how?
>Make fun of the compass
>End up using it a lot during the main game and the expansions
I had to use it a couple times in Ground Zero. There were a lot of unintuitive backtracking segments and little spots on the wall I needed to shoot to progress.
The main game is literally a hallway
There's a lot of backtracking and key hunting, especially near the end.
The palace in particular is very annoying to navigate without it.
I still think Q1 E4 was more of a labyrinth than the entirety of Q2, barring expansions
I want a new Quake which combines elements of the first two games instead of being all strogg all the time
It's fricking awesome that I can hop into coop games instantly. That's what's missing from most shooters
So I never actually played the Q1 remaster. How is it? I've heard mixed things about. Main thing that stopped me from playing it the first time was I couldn't figure out how to play it with QSS and still get the new mappack without having to download it manually.

I played it mostly on switch and Steam Deck and enjoyed it. If you're playing mouse and keyboard a source port will likely be preferable.
Its ok, but if you want to get quakin' get Arcane Dimensions, its the best of the best
Quake is back, baby.
How many are playing with a controller? It just doesn't feel right to me not being able to bunny hop
Hope they also remaster Quake 3 and 4 down the road. The remasters for Quake 1 and 2 are awesome.

They should just fricking contact Vin Diesel and continue from their glory days of Starbreeze.
The lighting doesn't match though, but the gameplay is so much better.
STROGG BOARD
yup strogg post strogg board
What's the point of Quake 2 remaster when there's already Quake 2 RTX
What's the point of playing a tech demo when you could be playing a video game with proper atmosphere?
Because RTX looks fricking awful on old games.
its kino
Didn't they inject alphabet shit into it
Why are you like this
They did and I pointed it out
They did what? What are you talking about?
What?
They injected it with alphabet shit
Ok nobody cares
The normal people that played Quake care, it's proof its been taken over by moronic twitter people
keep gaslighting yourself
explain
They put alphabet gang bullshit in the update
speak english
They injected the game with homosexual troony bullshit
Where?
Play the game moron
Anon, just because the game has letters doesn't count.
proof?
They injected the game with alphabetti spaghetti bullshit
for example?
alphabet soup?
They injected the game with BLT bullshit
Low quality b8 anon go fricking kys!
Now that's a spicy meatball
Show it then.
>hey guys homosexual troony shit is in this game.
Posts no proof then leaves
The only possible woke-shit I'm aware of is the lack of iron maidens in the new campaign.
?
>better
let's not get crazy here anon, how active is the mutiplayer though Quake 1 is still very semi active after nearly 30+ years insane!
Playing quake 1 remaster on xbox currently as these 2 are on gamepass. Do I want texture filtering on or off? I can't tell a difference but I usually leave it off for remasters
anon search the thread m8
you can literally SEE the difference between them right here
I think it looks better off.
Off for everything, but on for N64 campaigns as it's how those low res textures were designed to be viewed.
I hate the boring shitty weapons in Quake 2 and the boring shitty enemies
>I really liked it.
it's one of my favourite FPS campaigns ever. The hate comes from boomers who live in the past.
I was never a Quake guy, always Unreal Tournament for me.

Q1 is better but I still like 2.
Q2 is a lot better than I remember. I actually do like the weapon balance and enemy variety. It just isn't my favorite by any means
