All they need to do is align the crosshairs correctly, fix the ai, and add fast weapon switch and the game is perfect as is.

it also has a thing where physics will drag you slightly towards the zero point of the map during things like jumps

Why does Q2 get so much hate? it's a massive step up from the original

Revisionist zoomies that wanna fit in.
Q2 was all the rage back in the day. Every computer with windows 98 had it installed.

        Anonymous

        >Q2 was all the rage back in the day
Thats because it was HEAVILY hyped as the new go-to online shooter that was going to be easier to access than quake 1, when in actuality it was rushed out.

          Anonymous

          >it was rushed out.
          so was Q1.

            Anonymous

Yeah but it hit its major beats perfectly fine. The CORE of the game was fun, and ultimately thats the derivative of all the "boomer shooters" and nu-boomer shooters

              Anonymous

Q1 wasn't even supposed to be a shooter, it ended up as one because romero cound't stop fricking it up and they had to made it into one as a compromise cope.

                Anonymous

Happy accident then i'd say, look at how much its contributed to the shooter genre, and 3d movement in video games in general. And even the quake engine itself was massively influential

It was very generic. Doom? Beings from hell, with some creative demon designs. Quake? Eldritch horror and all sorts of crazy level design. Quake 2? Tech bases and body horror, but besides the Sonic Mayhem soundtrack it was all weapons, level tropes and stuff that Doom and Quake already did with a thin war mission story put on top. It was impressive for being an interconnected series of hubs and level design, but it was held as generic and kinda dull even then.

Really great graphical showcase, though, and the mods were great.

      Anonymous

it's a good game but has less variety than the original which changed it up level to level
q2 had that seamless level transition so the whole game just felt like a technobase themed quake level
overall the worldbuilding, style, weapons and enemies are pretty uninteresting but the game is solid

      Anonymous

boring maps, ugly aesthetics, no atmosphere, Q1 is billion times better

      Anonymous

      >it's a massive step up from the original
      No.
But it's still a good game despite of that. People would probably look at it more favorably if it wasn't called "Quake 2".

      Anonymous

      It's fricking boring.
Removed what made Quake special and instead you get a game that is neither here nor there. It is SOVLESS. Tom Hall and Romero where not completely wrong, Anachronox is genuinely a better game, like also every other Build Engine game of the time.

Seriously would you rather play Quake 2 over Blood? For real?

      Anonymous

worse guns, speed, physics, levels and music than the original. the only thing quake 2 has is more interesting enemy variety and thats about it. still a good game though but worse than 1 and 3.

      >Actual good MP from day 1, not some fricking "quakeworld" patchwork
      >Godlike soundtrack and not some shitty grunge "atmosphere" bullshit
      >Consistent presentation and narrative, not random ideas thrown together last minute
      >Parents probably saw pic related in Q2 and a bunch of kids got banned from playing it. Now they just hate Q2 because of it.

I honestly tried it, was boring as frick compared to quake 1

same as why zoomers claim that fallout 1 is better than fallout 2: they never played it back in the day.

Quake 2 is a great game, and a massive leap in technology (which you can't observe from the modern perspective)

Quake 2 is slow and boring.
The interconnected level design is pure cancer.
Difficulty is completely broken, you have an item that basically makes you invincible and makes Nightmare difficulty a joke.
That starter pistol is one of the worst weapons ever made in all games.

        Anonymous

The level design of Quake 2 is its best part. I'd love to play an actual well-designed game with that kind of setup.

        Anonymous

Funny how you always bring up the blaster when the Doom pistol is even worse

          Anonymous

At least Doom's pistol is hitscan based, so you can consistently and quickly take out the zombieman at any distance if for some reason you need to.
The Quake 2 blaster isn't even good for killing low tier enemies, it's useless, it actually looks like a toy, a tool for kids to play with fireworks safely as it doesn't hurt anyone.
The blaster is problematic because it's the first contact you will have with this new shooter and you immediately realize that it is a non-functional weapon, a weapon that is ugly as frick, that is not pleasant to use in any sense, that doesn't even look like a weapon in the first place, and that makes anyone suspicious about the ability of those designers to make a decent game right away.

            Anonymous

            >The Quake 2 blaster isn't even good for killing low tier enemies
Blatant lie. The Blaster does 10 points of damage. Light Guard, Shotgun Guard and Machine Gun Guard have 20, 30 & 40 HP respectively. Not only is the Blaster good for getting rid of smaller enemies, but it can be used in case you were running low on ammo.
The only reason why someone would think the Blaster is useless is that they can't aim for shit.

              Anonymous

To go on a bit of a side note, unreal at the time had the dispersion pistol as a blaster analogue that was much more useful, had upgrades and was actually useful on the higher difficulties.

              Anonymous

Not really, it's good at being a flashlight, killing light guards (because the others can hurt you if you don't kill them fast enough), finishing off enforcers if you only have a shotgun and sniping enemies if you don't have good weapons

To go on a bit of a side note, unreal at the time had the dispersion pistol as a blaster analogue that was much more useful, had upgrades and was actually useful on the higher difficulties.

You should see the one in Unreal Evolution, turns into a rocket launcher with upgrades

Yeah, the developers didn't really balance the game around it properly. By the end of the game you have like 17 powershields in storage if you find all secrets. The mappers thought they were like consumables or something. It's best to just not use them.

        Anonymous

Using items in combat or powershield is only for noobs

        >One item makes you invulnerable for a small period of time
        >This is enough to break the difficulty of a game which lasts hours

He's talking about the powershield, absorbs like 70% of all damage in exchange for cells. It's like having 2-3 body suits on.

i think arcane dimensions looks really nice but i dont think it actually plays very well. i dont think its nostalgia because i played and beat quake 1 when i was an adult. something about ad feels like a slog and i cant put my finger on it. i guess it somehow manages to have less enemy variety on a level basis since they are more heavily themed, and the levels themselves while pretty dont feel very well designed

I'm glad they didn't kill the game completely when they stopped supporting it. It would have been easy to just take the servers down and let it die. They also grandfathered in anyone who had it in their Steam library when they made it buy to play instead of trying to make the current playerbase pay up.

quake is the most guy game ever made. its just about shooting shit until the blow up into guts while metal is blasting in your ears. they would have to legitimately increase their workload twofold to include anything resembling 'woke' in the game

i believe it when i see it. it'll be zoomers involved in making the game. there's no reason they don't think the design of the enemies are inclusive enough or the campaign have 51% female soldiers.

Quake 2 was one of the first FPS games I ever saw let alone play, the other being the original Unreal Tournament. Even though it isn't the most compelling game in the world gameplay wise, I still really enjoy running though this game every so often, killing all the enemies, finding secrets and listening to this game's soundtrack.

Quake 2 was the historical milestone that aged poorly.

gays shitting on it dont understand - it was massive step up in graphics and technology when it released. There was nothing like it and were none until Half-Life, Sin maybe. Unreal looked more fancy, but in other aspects lost to Quake 2 still.

Quake 1 wasnt as popular as 2 since, Q2 was actually great on lan/online play while Q1 was meh. And by the day standards, Q2 graphics were simply amazing.

Honestly, the only meaningful way for ID to return Quake 2, is make a super high specs graphic tech demo that needs 2 4090 in SLI to run on mid settings. Remastering or remaking the game in original state makes no sense.

    If you think about it
If you REALLY think about it
We already have a Quake 2 remaster, Doom 2016
    Think about it though

    >nightdive
    I'm perfectly ok with this.
Also, as much as I loved Quake 1 as a kid, I always prefered the fricked up stroggs from 2

      I like Nightdive
I know some remakes weren't great but they still do justice to many old games
and SS1 was good I hear

Generally Nightdive are great but they fricked up Blood unfortunately. Doesn't matter cuz we got NBlood and GDX ports around the time of its release. I wish we could play NBlood with a Fresh Supply feeling mouse though. KEX engine always has an excellent mouse feel.

          >but they fricked up Blood
They also fricked up Bladerunner while having it delisted from GOG on release.Probably wouldn't be back if not for backlash over the technical state of their remaster.

in games like quake and dukenukem you could just connect to somebody's single player session and play "co-op" with all your friends if you wanted to. would be nice if they weren't like every other shitty company today and allowed people to type in IPs to connect to.
