Only thing that might shake up vr is apple. Not because it is anything different but if they somehow convince a critical mass of their golems to purchase it then the market is no longer a joke. Highly highly unlikely though. Vr is for porn and nothing else.
apple is not for games, they're aiming to replace laptop/phones from the high end
while quest targets it from the low end, but focuses on gaming cause the tech still needs to improve before it can really replace phones and laptops
doesn't matter apples thing can't even play games. The important thing is if they can make putting goggles on your face appealing and mainstream. If they can then there's a chance VR leaves the niche. If they can't then just throw it on the pile of existing VR glasses.

I think overall Quest has better tracking and support.
Quest 3 will also be getting improved VD video but only if you have a top end GPU.
I got a pico 4 or 300 euros and I can't complain about it. Problem with wireless headsets is that you need to fork out cash for other stuff.
If you're gonna play wired with only a usb-c cable (about 15-20$) then you'll get 4-5hrs of playtime. A wifi6 router that's decent enough for streaming is around 70$ (TP Link AX3000/Asus RT-AX55), it'll need to be in the room you want to play in to get best results.
Virtual Desktop is 20$, or you can pirate an old version. The default pico streaming software while good now has lower resolution options than VD and you can really tell the difference. If the comfort of the face gasket isn't enough there's the AMVR ones for 40$.
If you want more than 90mins - 2hrs of wireless playtime you'll need to get battery banks ( https://www.amvrshop.com/products/nec-battery-for-quest-2-quest-pro-pico-4) if you get two of them it's infinite playtime because you can simply have one charging while using the other one but personally I haven't had sessions that last more than 4-5hrs so I only use one cuz I'm cheap.
Overall if you want to get into VR to play PCVR at high quality then just the base headset with nothing else is fine and then you can pump as much money as you want to improve the experience. For example I got a USB DAC with Power Input and 3.5mm Jack input so I can play with earbuds while it's charging from the power bank. It's really amazing to get lost in the games and horror games are even more frightning.

What can I say. I really like VR and wish I got into it earlier so now whenever is asking question I try to answer the best I can.
I've been playing regular games for so long and I was looking for new experiences but I don't know why my brain tuned out of VR for so many years because of the price tag (even though I could afford it).
It's not going to make a huge market swing, but in terms of standalone quality and convenience of use it's what I've been waiting for.

whatever you are watching is not native 8k, but likely some terribly compressed downscale
Considering the Quest 2 panel is not even 4k.. you must be watching the characters 8 and k going at it.
Q2 has 1832×1920 per eye, so nearly 4k. But it struggles to actually play non compressed 4k - hell, many older PCs do.
But for stereoscopic 180 VR you dont need 8k screen to watch 8k video, since you dont see full video ahead of yourself, but its segment (as you can rotate head around to see the rest). So the higher resolution the better, and 4k looks like 720p at best.
Quest fails to even play 5k properly, despite that being somewhat of standart for VR vids atm. Add to that need to use HEVC format, and Quest cant play it at all - only with PCVR stream.
Quest Pro is actually good. So rather thatn buying Q3, i`d wait for QPro to fall in price or buy used, or wait for new Valve helmet

No, and careful what you wish for. Look how awful youtube and the internet in general is now that the masses use it. The moment VR becomes popular they'll censor everything, put ads up everywhere, sell battle passes and lootboxes and ban you for wrongthink.
