The people in decision-making roles on product development teams are either personally invested in the cause and will continue to push it until they have enough failures under their belt to get sacked/drive the company out of business or they bought the pitch that this would make their games sell better with "modern audiences" and will reevaluate that stance based on whether or not that happens. The second group definitely takes things like boycotts into account.
PR teams will also want to avoid getting tangled in controversies like this unless they're co-opting the company's authority to fight their personal battles, but that won't stop them from hiring a similar consulting firm or doing the same things in-house if it's believed that pandering to minorities increases the new audience more than it alienates the traditional audience.
