      >We talked about potentially making it multiplatform before, but this announcement made me realize the effect of narrowing it down to one platform. It would be a different story with an AAA title, but there are so many AA and A titles that it would get buried if it were multiplatform. It was Spike Chunsoft who made the decision to make it Switch-only, and I think it was a wise one.
      >Nintendo Direct has much more influence than State of Play, so that seems like an advantage of making it Switch-only. Although developed by other companies, Nintendo Direct announced Triangle Strategy while State of Play announced The DioField Chronicle, both of which are Square Enix games with similar needs, and yet their sales numbers are completely different. I don’t think that’s an issue with the games themselves. It seems like a difference in promotion from my outside perspective.
SC has been pushing it pretty hard (for SC) in Japan too

they're onto the fact that even if you're third party, making a game exclusive to switch can expose it to people who would not otherwise give it a chance
they're unfortunately oblivious to the fact that you do not get this treatment when you announced your game before committing to making it switch exclusive, and showed what it looked like running on better hardware than the switch, then revealed the switch version with blatant quality and performance issues that give the appearance of a ported multiplatform game

          Anonymous

They wouldn't do it if the DR games hadn't sell well on the Switch and those were very late ports.

            Anonymous

27,626 units before falling off Famitsu's weekly charts. Presumably it sold better in the west, but I can't find any international sales figures.

              Anonymous

The only info on the later ports for DR in the west was that it did well on Switch, more than Vita and PS4 did and Spike Chunsoft were really happy with it. But it surprisingly did ridiculously well on Xbox with the Game Pass launches, especially the first game, that it genuinely surprised SC and the creators how much of an interest there was. The series is a bit of an odd duck when it comes to how well it did on different platforms.

Ace attorney aspects will balance it out to make a painfully average game

      Anonymous

      >Danganronpa is anti-kino
Only because of lore autism and the formulaic progression. It struggles in the same way Raging Loop did: You really can't make the game's setup make sense in the context of the real world without invoking pure bullshit. Dangan 1 got around this issue by just playing into the absurdity of a high school girl destroying the world, and ending without telling you what happened afterward. Dangan 2 put off dealing with the issue until the last minute, and then everything up to V3 suffered because of it.
V3 managed to be good because they made up a ton of stories, constantly destroyed their own script for theming, and gave a giant middle finger to Dangan lore autism. It just gets shit on because you'd only buy and appreciate V3 if you loved the previous two games, and that selects for VN lore autists.

V3 began falling apart from Chapter 4 where characters became horribly OoC and Chapter 5 was a shitshow in desperation to match the "epic" tension of 2-5. And its ending came off as though Kodaka had enough of the series and wanted exit in the most explosive way possible. Mind you, he left the company after V3 released.

          >V3 began falling apart from Chapter 4 where characters became horribly OoC and Chapter 5 was a shitshow in desperation to match the "epic" tension of 2-5.
Both of which are caused by the secondary plot and meta-commentary in line with the game's theme.

            Anonymous

You'd have a case if the OoC actions of a character were driven from the character connecting with their true personalities. But that wasn't the case. It has nothing to do with the meta-commentary and everything to do with shitty writing.

              Anonymous

              >It has nothing to do with the meta-commentary and everything to do with shitty writing.
No, "true personalities" would just be cliché. Their OoC actions come from Team Danganronpa constantly fricking up the story to patch issues in a rushed way. The fan-favorite/main character from the previous season died instantly, with the heroine going shortly after (notice his room being in section 5, not 1); Angie destroyed the plot update device, then shut down the plan to "resurrect" Kaede; Miu put literal shit in front of the audience surrogate, necessitating her immediate death, etc.

Means nothing because it's a mystery VN spinoff. That genre doesn't lend itself to open-world gameplay. You're just scattering the necessary pieces over a larger space and making connections more difficult. It'd be better to use that dev time writing extra dialogue or making additional cases to put in the base game.

I genuinely can't say, since both of their creators are frickknuckles who are good at coming up with premises for mysteries, but invariably shit the bed by the ending.

So I'm guessing it'll come down to whether Level-5 can successfully bridge the gap in Decapolice between turn-based JRPG battles and murder mystery VN in a meaningful way, to give it the edge over the tried-and-true formula that Rain Code's going with, or frick it up and have it be half-baked.

        Anonymous

        >tried-and-true formula that Rain Code's going with
they're doing the "6 chapters, 1 murder per chapter" thing again?

          Anonymous

Probably. They're doing mostly the same formula as DR for the gameplay, just with slight twists like having to dodge in the debate minigame.

          Anonymous

I'm more referring to the "crime happens, search crime scene for all evidence, go to other location to take an extensive logic quiz to answer the mysteries and expose the culprit, conclude case, repeat" formula that you see in Danganronpa, Ace Attorney, and many others.

But I wouldn't be surprised if Rain Code ends up with about 6 main cases in the game, since the range of 4-7 cases seems to be the sweet spot, and we've got about 2.5 confirmed cases thus far.

            Anonymous

At the very least the existance of 4 DLC packs confirms at least 4 cases beyond the base game's.

...Assuming, of course, the "four substories" equals four entire extra cases, and not just four extra sidequests or four extra VN backstories for particular detectives.

I'm hoping for the former, but the bizarreness of a murder mystery game having a fricking season pass is making me temper my expectations.

                Anonymous

Based on what little we get, my guess is each will be a case where you play as one of the other detectives/a group of them?
I think it would be hard to add more content that isn't a case, even if it's a mini-case.

Well, sidequests are already confirmed to be in the game, which themselves seem to be very mini cases.
Make four of them that are slightly bigger and involve the help of another detective, and boom, Season Pass content.
