Makoto was certainly a better antagonist than Junko.

Can it be called a successor when Kozuka outright confirmed that Danganronpa was still alive and that Rain Code is simply a different IP?

Pretty sure old fans being abandoned because the creator wants to fool switchgays with the exclusivity lie will just upset both sides

It was just ok. The main thing it lacked compared to danganronpa was the characterization of most of the killers and victims. You barely get to know them and then the murder happens and it acts like you are meant to give a shit. It is especially notable in chapter 1 and 3.

basically this, also the last chapter was just a big lore dump revelation showing in a really lazy way, the first half of the final fight was great but it was really dragging on the later half.
if they make a sequel i just hope they will realize which part was bad, i wouldn't mind playing more of that if they improve on it, though i don't know how they could improve from really cool rainy neon city to modern day california

You hit the nail on the head. The Peacekeepers were really underdeveloped too. It’s like they tried doing the Warriors of Hope again with none of what made them memorable(besides some good character designs).
I think separating the Mystery Labyrinth from the real world was a mistake too. It made it less satisfying discovering the killer since you don’t confront them in the real world, they just drop dead. The formula of getting captured by Peacekeepers, Mystery Labyrinth-ing, then coming back to find nothing has changed and getting saved by another deus ex machina became very annoying.

I could see it. The mystery itself is solid but it gives away the twist nearly immediately, the investigation sequence is the most repetitive in the game and the character art takes a huge hit in quality as they obviously got someone else in to do all that episode's character sprites.
Still pretty high for me in spite of that, though.

      5>2>4>1>3>0

3 would be last but come on the Fubuki scenes are some of the best in the game

I found it to be a lateral step. Some things I liked better, some worse, didn't set the world on fire but wasn't terrible outside the Case 3 Curse.

They're finally freed of having to carry the same cast from beginning to end but the end result is that everything feels really flimsy and disposable as they use their newfound freedom to try and set up an entirely new cast for every goddamn case.

I liked it a lot. I enjoyed the main characters and the setting of Kanai Ward. Chapters 4 and 5 were really well done imo and the game ended on a pretty strong note compared to the danganronpa games. With all that said, I do think the game suffered by having Yuma only I interact with one detective per chapter, it would have been much better if you got to see them all interact together like in chapter 4 more.

It's the complete inverse for DR3 Chapter 1, feels like a developer injoke.

I hated Chapter 0 so much I started feeling extreme buyer's remorse, but starting with 1 it got better.

It was a fantastic game and good to see the director is planning a sequel to both Rain Code and Danganronpa

I enjoyed it while playing it but didn't think about it much at all afterward. Doesn't feel like it has strong staying power.

I think it's good enough, but hopefully a second game expands on the formula a bit more just like Danganronpa 2 did.
