Producers play a large role in Japan back then, they held more power and influence than directors, I'm the modern day devs they're called "Creative Directors" which is different from gameplay directors who's job is to make sure the game's fun to play and oversee level and combat designers, the producers/CDs job is to sell the idea of the game to the suites, secure funding, make sure the game is successful and within the image of the brand/series and studio, cut out concepts and systems that are underdeveloped or unfun and most importantly make sure the game's is done on time.

Take a look at Resident Evil's custodian and the hidden face of the series, Jun Takeuchi for am example of a creative director, 7 was his idea and the golden age that Capcom has been having since 2017 was his handy work.

There is no formal convention when it comes to describe the actual involvement of a producer. And the credit sheet is something arbitrarily decided by the owners of the product and the publishers. There are certain legal limitations under specific working environments, which determine conventional requirements for role assignment and percetages. But at the end of the day, every company is entitled to their own way of acknowledging these roles. He was probably given the title of producer because, given this was a sequel, of all the people in there, he was one of the very few left from the developent of SH1, completely in charge of sound design and he happened to be the member of the team most people knew. There were already competent teams with people in charge of the visuals, animations, the overall design of the creatures and environments, plot, code, etc. Such as Hiroyuki Owaku and Masahiro Ito.
Also, in every interview regarding SH3, he always talks about sound. It's not unreasonable to assume he was just overseeing the project and was offered the charge of producer so he could get a cut of the profit, which wouldn't be possible as a sound designer.

I don't entirely understand putting Origins and Homecoming below Shattered Memories on the grounds that those are actual video games made in the image of the classics, even if they fall well short of the ideal.

          >I don't entirely understand putting Origins and Homecoming below Shattered Memories
          Simple:
HC and 0rigins are pure trash. SM is a great game, partly because it does not even TRY to mimic the old ones or copy the god-awul Movie.

            Anonymous

            >SM is a great game
Eh, it's a decent psychoanalysis sim with good aesthetics and great flashlight physics. A good game, though? It's not awful but it's not really trying to be much of mechanical substance either, and SH is a series that already didn't need to slim down further on that. I would not say SM, as a game, took the series to a better place than HC or 0. Nor would I call those games "pure trash" when they're more like 6/10 horror games, maybe even a 7 in 0's case.

I just started playing Origins and its pretty shit. Ive never played a SH before should i skip it?

dont even bother with that western pile of shit, it contradicts the lore of the first game and doesnt do anything intersting with it. Start with SH1 and stop at 4

Why are you starting with that of all games? Play the first four games in order and then decide if you want to go further. Everything after 4 is outsourced to various different devs.

Design wise it's absed off 1/2. Walk around town, go into buildings, solve puzzles that crap. Gameplay wise you have breakable weapons but shit is everywhere so you're not in any danger of running out and Travis can actually melee so it's not the end of the world if you're caught unawares. Just ignore the story and pretend it isn't canon.

Oh I should mention there's no difficulty levels but when you beat it the game gives you rewards for shit like not using your torch a lot or killing shitloads of monsters. So yeah replayability if somehow the thing doesn't bore you.

Finally played through the Room the other day. I enjoyed the game up until I was about halfway through. The game just started dogpiling all of its worst features on me as it went on and it just made me hate the hours that followed. Didn't like escorting Eileen, dealing with ghosts, dealing with Walter or dealing with the constant hauntings and all that shit was going on while backtracking through all these areas I already JUST cleared. They brought it back at the end of the game, but this one felt like a notable dip in quality compared to the rest of the series. None of the characters in this game are even gonna stick with me besides maybe Walter and his autism. Had some neat ideas and novelties, at least

Town exploration sections are better in 1 than in 2. Why? Because they have exclusive enemies than you don't find in the indoors sections, and because sometimes you explore on the otherworld (streets are now metal grates above darkness, there is rain, etc)

Literally WHAT story tourist, the story of 3 is an exact 1:1 copy-paste of the plot of SH1 except even LESS, including the NPCs
      >Kaufman->Vincent
      >Dahlia->Claudia
      >Sybil->Douglass
      >Lisa->Literally minus a character because they were too lazy to write a fourth NPC
they knew from the start that the plot of SH1 was wrapped up and scrambled to pull something random out of their ass. I will die on the hill that any morons like this only played the first two levels of SH3 and based their entire opinion on that (in summation: please have a nice day)

I like the combat in 3 the most, and it has the best unlockables.

in all fairness, you're right, the aesthetics/graphics/audio and combat of SH3 is superior to 1 or 2, but you are the only person to ever mention that, too often gigamorons like act like SH3 has a "story" lol (lmao even)

I played SH1 but have barely any memory of it because it was really forgettable, so even if SH3's story is as identical as you claim it is, it at least presented itself much better hence why I remember it far more fondly.

Yes, if you had to play one game about Alessa and the cult, SH3 is the superior game over SH1
but it really has no reason to exist - SH2 successfully avoided just rehashing SH1 and managed to craft a completely new narrative - SH3 is just rehashed slop by comparison. It'd be okay if SH1 didn't exist but, it does so, why does SH3 exist? It's totally unnecessary

3 was made because Japan didn't like 2 an wanted a continuation of 1 and what happened to the mysterious baby AKA Heather AKA Cheryl/Alessa.

They were working on a SH rail shooter for arcades and had to scrap that and make 3 ASAP because they received angry mails from Japanese players after 2.
1=4>3>2>Downpour>Origins>Homecoming, didn't play Shattered Memories yet and I've dropped HC about a year ago, i was at the house after the masked men kidnapped the mother.

I'm conflicted about it, it's not "bad" per say, it's an uneven game, technically it's a mess on all platforms, on the 360 (the main platform it was developed for) it ran like shit, no AA and screen tearing galore, on the PS3 (the platform the series is associated with) it's even worse! Sub 720, worse graphic detail, no AA, horrid blur effects, no trophies bit it's mostly a stable 30fps, PC is a nightmare to run, it's has audio issues that were never fixed and trying the fix I found on Steam fourms didn't seem to work for me, it's not compatible with anything over Vista and is a HUGE pain in the ass to get running, and it will crash frequently when you do get it running, it also didn't have native controller support, but you get 1080p/60fps.

It's a 7th generation game through and through, no subtlety in a series known for it, horrid character models (the love interest and her mother) it story and characters is filled with the mid 2000s horror cliches (it's when shit like the SAW movies were at the height of their popularity) and takes a lot from the Hollywood movie than from any of the prior games, on the other hand the combat has been improved, some of the enemy designs were cool, the fact that the game takes place outside of SH was a nice idea but they fricked that up, the puzzles were the usual 7th gen shit in a series were puzzles were tied and changed up according to the difficulty selection.

Downpour, if the team had more money, time and did a sequel the series might not have died.

why am I not fricking surprised, should've nuked them a third time

thank you for the insight, much appreciated.

          also
          >Downpour, if the team had more money, time and did a sequel the series might not have died.
I think you are the only other person on the planet who doesn't think Downpour was shit. the developers legitimately tried to fix the issues with the series, but they added a handful of brand new ones (the bad and "neutral" endings both re-write and invalidate the entire plot, they shouldn't have been made that way). Downpour was the first SH game to feel like an adventure game since 4, but it came out at a time with zoomie-addled first-person jumpscare horror was taking off so the game failed to find an audience.

            Anonymous

I didn't say Downpour was perfect or didn't have problems up the ass, I just wanted to say I loved it inspite of the problems it had, and they were many, like you said the endings, the uneven performance, the mostly shit monster designs, the combat system which was ambitiouson paper but turned out servicable at best and weightless, the other world concept needed a LOT more than simply running away.

It had a lot of heart, soul and passion from the devs and it shows, the world was incredibly fun to explore, the sidequest were fun and told their own mini stories, the side characters were good, the story had a very good premise and it would've been top 3 in the series if they stuck the landing, some of the enemies were unnerving to encounter without the proper tool, and i specifically mean the invisable mannequins wh9ch you cab run into them in one of the side quest before getting the UV lights and they scared the shit out of me.

The little info we got behind the scenes Konami was 1000% to blame, they cut the already minuscule budget, they refused to delay the game, and the studio that made it was shut down before it could fix any of the bugs/performance issues and Konami didn't give a shit to do it themselves or even port it to PC.

learning about the behind the scenes of downpour is really cringe tale. For example one of the big complaints was the lackluster enemy variety in game. According to devs they concepted hundreds of monster designs in the production but everything was micromanaged through Konamis office. So everything got rejected while replacement ideas included "lets have creepy ceiling crawler because homecoming had one and focus groups responded well"

not sure whose idea the shit otherworld was though, might be devs OG

Konami.....man I haven't seen a company as greedy, disrespectful of their creators vision, so out of touch and as self destructive as them.

People on the internet like to shit talk Square Enix but they put out over 100-200 games since their merger and every game had a distinct identity that reflects it's creators, for better or worse, and each feels unique and with a proper budget even in a niche franchise like Mana.

Konami has been greedy c**ts since at least 99, Igavanias during the 6th gen had shoe string budget (anything not named MGS really) and were made under strict deadlines and all made profits but it was never enough, but all had distinct identities.

During the 7th gen (2006~7) that started outsourcing their IP to newly founded studios with no pedigree so they can exploit them and make game as cheaply as possible, so we got SH Origins developed by Climax Studios which I quite liked after a recent playthrough on PSP, but it wasn't anything special and an unnecessary prequel, fun, competent but not memorable or up to the standards of the previous games.
Next we go Homecoming made by the recently formed Double Helix again on the cheap, technically disastrous, generic mid 2000s Hollywood horror film with black funny sidekick, the little brother and abusive father trope.
Then came Shattered Memories by Climax again, an original game made from the ground up for the hot new Wii, but Konami didn't like the teams vision and forced them into making it a remake/remaining of 1.
Then they gave Castlevania to unknown Spanish studio Mercury Steam and while LoS1 was successful both critically and financially they fricked up the studios vision of LoS2 and rushed it out the door.

Konami should've remained dead, they've basically been hard carried by Kojima since 2008 and been a walking zombie since 2014, all of the new games they've put out and the SH games coming out in the future is just their 7th gen MO part 2, I mean fricking Bloober Team? Really?

A lot of this post is just twisting the facts.
          >They were working on a SH rail shooter for arcades and had to scrap that and make 3 ASAP because they received angry mails from Japanese players after 2.
          That's not what happened.
Silent Hill 3 went through several development phases, the rail shooter one just happened to be the longest of them. The devs deciding to pursue what the fans wanted was something done out of their own interests rather than something forced onto them- a lot of them held the feeling that 2's response was indicative of the idea that they failed to follow on from Toyama's work properly.
The angry fan mail stuff is pure conjecture.

Dude Masahiro Ito himself talked about all of this on his twitter account.

He said that Japanese players hated 2 and insulted the team that made cause it was different from 1 and they wanted something closer to 1 a continuation of what happened to Harry and Alessa.

NTA, but they started working on 3 one month after 2's release. They were already planning on doing a sequel, and the repercussions of 2 made them realize the public wanted a continuation to 1's plot. They never had to restart production with anything as far as we know, and the whole "rail shooter" sounds more like something they would try for 4, which was developed simultaneously with 3, as a spin-off. They already wanted to implement first person mechanics there, and the proof is in the released game.

So, what is Maria exactly? Born from a wish seems to imply she's her own thing despite being created by James somehow? Is the Maria in the final boss fight the same Maria that we meet at the start of the game?

I always thought she was a hallucination, an idealized version of his wife in James' head. Basically a version of her that never got sick and started being shitty to him

She's created by town just like monsters.

      Anonymous

I figured she was just another thing made by the town to torture or punish James for his sins and guilt. She's a figment. She dies again and again to inflict him with misery as he watches his "wife" die, she looks so similar to his wife to make him feel pangs of guilt when he mistakes her and to cause confusion, she's a bawdted up version of his wife to further add to the shame of it, and she tries to seduce him specifically to make him feel conflicted because of his wife (especially with her similarities). Pyramid Head is his physical executioner to punish him for his crimes, whereas Maria plays on his emotional turmoil and anguish. So I figured "born from a wish" means it's the town twisting James's desire to have his wife but healthier (and perhaps more suited to his particular tastes in women). Because it being a twisted wish of what he wants makes him feel more ashamed about it.

4 is the best in terms of the moment to moment gameplay, had the best villian, a great setup, a very scary and personal horror with being stuck in an apartment that get increasingly haunted as the game goes, add to the fact it's done in a first person POV, the world's while small in size were fun and unconfusing to explore, the ghost enemies were unnerving, the various weapons that you got to use were great, especially that they actually bothered to make you use them because the bullets were so scarce in the game unlike the previous game especially the fan favorite 2 which had so much ammo and health items it was stupid to use the melee weapons after the first dungeon or die in the game.

4 is really underrated, it's my personal favorite and I never got the hate, and I started with 1 which I prefer to 2 by a long shot.

        Based fellow 4 appreciator

There are very few actual problems with SH4. Using directional controls in a game with scripted camera angle switching should never be done, and the previous games use tank controls for this exact reason. So, the developers apparently just forgot why the previous games were designed the way they were. There's also flavor text all over the place, and it can override quest item use locations because of their proximity, causing you to try to use items in the correct place, but only millimeters off target, which can make you believe that you're in the wrong place since all you get is an unrelated piece of flavor text. Finally, the revisiting of all previous levels seems fairly lazy, considering that there aren't even significant changes to them to make it more interesting.
But all of these flaws aren't enough to make me dislike 4. It's still my favorite even though I know that objectively it's not a well-designed gameplay experience.

          Anonymous

The hauntings blew my mind back then. It was genius. The apartment was supposed to be the safe room where you can regen health, relax a bit and peep at your waifu then all hell breaks loose. It’s like some Black folk decided to do a home invasion, where your safe haven is now a dangerous area.

      Anonymous

This will sound queer but I like how "normal" SH4 feels. Too many horror games just think darkness = scary because they live in fear of Nigs breaking into their house at 2:AM and while nothing in 4 is technically in broad daylight it doesn't really abuse the staples of Silent Hill or Horror nearly as much as other 6th gen stuff does. Like for example looking out your apartment window, or the bright as frick Water Prison or even the surprisuingly well lit forest area.

It just scratched a weird itch of like Amatuer video horror of the early 2000s that nothing else did. Despite being kind of shit.

I get what you mean. SH4 in general is a bit of a gem, there's so many good things about it. Problem is it has tons of other issues preventing it from being a truly good game. Replaying it quite recently I really grew to like the game though, it has a massive amount of good things about it.

Horror has to be the most difficult genre in terms of sequels. Silent Hill used up most of its novel tricks in the first entry and since then they were forced to reuse them or make scarier levels/monsters like in 3 to compensate. Unlike other genres you cannot make a horror sequel by just improving on the last game, because the same stuff is not scary twice.

This is why horror lives on through buzzword meme games and not long-lasting franchises. Both SH and RE were confronted with the same problem, either alienate your current audience by switching it up to keep it fresh, or give up & repeat the same scares to diminishing returns. It's just a problem with horror as a genre

Me and some friends got a hold of the first three. Pretty much mint condition. We've been doing game nights, and they're a ton of fun.
Just beat the school level, and we honestly have nothing to complain about, save for the one part where you had to find a key that had been halfway flushed down a drain; we ended up walking through the school cluelessly for about two hours.
The combat is clank as shit, but honestly it feels kinda right: you're playing as some dude with no combat training wielding a rusty pipe, so it makes sense that he sucks at fighting even the most basic enemies.
Playing such an old game really gives a lot ot perspective on how far we've come in some places, but also the minute details we've lost along the way, like the artistic shots you can get with fixed camera angles, and the fact that you didn't have to highlight items with yellow paint or light beams since the detail is so low that you'll spot them anyways. It's very immersive and fun, and I can't wait to see the rest.

I started using Duckstation to play SH1 last week, but does anyone know if there's a way to make Duckstation game shortcuts in Windows? I prefer just having one launcher for my games, and that launcher is Windows. With epsxe you could easily make shortcuts by just adding launch parameters that include the disc images. But I can't seem to find any documentation about how to accomplish that with Duckstation.

Atmosphere, game design, scariness - 1, always 1. Unfortunately, it plays like ass. 2 is the most iconic, it's really a classic. 3 is great. 3's gameplay is a little bit more fricky than 2. Still, they both play well compared to 1, they also have cool shit you couldn't have in 1 because of hardware limitations, all of this makes them even. Love all 3.
Now 4 is a fricking travesty. Not bad for a horror game, but horrible for a silent hill game.

All the western SH games have a big guilt monster following the protagonist around because of something dark he did in his past. That is a direct ripoff of SH2 ( and ONLY SH2) yet it became the western silent hill formula. The other 3 games focused more on the cult and the town itself.

      further, since i'm sure 99% of posters ITT haven't played downpour either;
SH overall I would argue explores grief through the medium of vidya
SH2 focuses on Denial, with James spending the game trying to figure out what he did, and then coming to terms with it.
Downpour is more about Anger/bargaining, you start the game having already murdered 2 people, and the game explores whether or not it was worth it. vengeance is also the primary motivation for the other main characters, namely the cop trying to avenge her father, and the bus driver committing suicide as vengeance against himself.

        >focuses on Denial,
Imo it is about gaslighting. I think it is funny how so many people just assume the evil demon town was telling the truth to James. Or maybe it was simply playing into his guilty feelings, whether real or not?

          Anonymous

i've always seen it more as a reflection of the psyche of whatever character we're seeing. SH2 kind of explicitly states this with Angela's "it's always like this for me" line: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eyaLoaUbExk god that piano still gives me chills

also, what is gaslighting but denying someone else's reality?

All I remember from Downpour is the main character screaming.

the game is a real slog until you get to the devil's pit at least: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xkfo7Yw3q3c

Yeah I just mean many people act like the moral is "James is le evil" but the town is an evil ass place as established by SH1. I think it is a kind of open ended nightmare sequence. It is about guilt and all that but it ain't some kind of bullshit.

I'm never ever going to be able to change anyone's mind on it but Origins is decent.

Sanitarium is one of the best designed levels in the series. I've never been in a place so dark, oppressive and with more locked doors than SH3 combined. The Theatre is also pretty well designed and the Riverview Motel while just a literal low budget version of SH2's Hotel is at least cute because it's links to Kaufman seems to be a partial reference to the Motel sidequest from SH1.

The problem with the game was that it was boned from the start. Being bongs forced to fill in for AMericans who were in turn replacing the original Team Silent having to use the original American dev teams vision, the Pyramid Head clone and fmv cutscenes which were all terrible and contradictory. Coughman being the cult leader makes no sense and neither does the idea that anyone besides Dahlia "seeing" the Otherworld before Silent Hill happens. At the very least it feels like the actual gameplay part is trying it's hardest to salvage the trainwreck they were force upon and the references in t hose sections actually felt tasteful (Like just as an example the game pulls the same trick that Heather's Pendant in 3 does where a otherwise useless momento you start off with becomes useful for a late game "puzzle" clearly someone on the dev Team played 3

Origins was fine for a PSP game but it never should have been a prequel to SH1. Easily could've been its own story with how detailed they made Travis's backstory.

The initial poor sales numbers of SH2 threw Team Silent off track and made them consider SH3 as a rail shooter:
    https://twitter.com/adsk4/status/1143637883066052609

Team Silent said that Konami forced them from their original vision and to make it more combat oriented to make it appeal to a wider audience. In fact, the original concept of SH3 was not even to make it a sequel but a standalone story like 2, that even borrowed some concepts from it, but they cut it because they didn't want to make similar to the game that just preceded, and they were also worried that it wouldn't pass the ratings agency.

    https://www.silenthillmemories.net/creators/interviews/2005.04.23_imamura_yamaoka_gameworld_en.htm

    >Originally the intention was not to make SH3 a direct sequel to the first game. In fact, the scenario was completely different, but fans seemed to want to tie up some loose ends, so we tried that, even though some on the staff did not agree with the decision.

    >What was the original scenario for SH3? Are you allowed to divulge that?
    >It was much more along the lines of the second, where the main character was a damaged human being, summoned to the town for a very specific reason. It was, or should say is, the darkest story we have come up with.
    >I'm sure a lot would have to be cut. Just the preliminary scenario had elements that would most likely not be approved by the ratings boards. Another thing is we really didn't want to use a similar template as SH2 for the game that followed it. That was another deciding factor in changing SH3.

So if they didn't make SH2 first or weren't afraid of the ratings agency, SH3 could have been quite twisted in terms of plot and design

        1 = 2 = 3 > 4

These days is so hard for me to choose a clear better game, after replaying them several times they become their own thing and they each feel unique. Now it boils down to however I'm feeling in that particular period. Last year my favorite was 1, right now is 3.

I've always loved the "Rebirth" ending. It feels more connected to SH story as a whole and doesn't outright ignore the cult. Although I obviously get that it doesn' t really fit into the overall narrative.

Are you me? I've always felt similarly, usually SH1 is my favorite but lately I've been particularly feeling SH3 right now. Planning to play through all four of them again for this month though so we'll see how that goes. They each have their own strengths and weaknesses that I think makes it just really depend where in life I'm at how I feel about them.

I really do like RE4 but 4 is possibly the worst character assasination I've ever seen (and possibly of the entire series as well). Like I can give 4 props for probabaly being the only RE game since 1 that actually tries to be scary and it still has puzzles at least but it doesn't really change the fact it sold out to the fanbase brought in by that shitty movie series where the characters were all doing matrix shit. SH actually tried to do the same but the difference is Konami can't do anything right and killed the series in the process.

I gotta tell you, bros, if you want to be scared, play The Forest alone, in a dark room.
That shit is the scariest game I've played. It wasn't THAT scary because I'm pretty brave, but there were times where I almost shit myself and felt deep terror well within me, you know that sinking feeling?. I REALLY didn't like going down caves, but the surface is also scary, so you're stuck between a rock and a hard place. There's just something primal about going into murky caves with a torch and fighting off pale humanoids with a spear, and then dismembering and eating them if you're out of food. At times, I felt real terror and had to hiss and make grimaces in real life to overpower it and drive the enemy away. I felt real, actual relief after making it out of caves, the enemies are genuinely scary and dangerous. It just needed a little more shit to do on the surface to be more fun. It's a 10/10 for me, great game.

Silent Hill 1 : Seeing the town plunging progressively into a hellish state while you don't really understand what's happening (rituals, occult stuff) feels overwhelming (that's great for a horror game). The atmosphere is also truly oppressing thanks to the soundtrack. I also really like the snow/fog mixed together.
The monsters and otherworld design is the weakest in the series, which is understandable because it's the first game and they're still experimenting with the concept.

Silent Hill 2: Everything put together (character development of the main and side characters, monsters, design, music, melancholic atmosphere, symbolism, coherent story progression, etc.) makes it the best game of the series.

Silent Hill 3: Has the best main character of the series. The otherworld (best design in the series for me) is truly scary and unsettling (pulsating flesh, blood, veins, etc).

Silent HIll 4: the most horror inducing game. I'm still scared to play it without someone else besides me. Losing the safe space of your own home is terrifying. Also the unkillable ghosts are nightmare fuel. The vilain is also great.

So making a tier list is kind of hard because it depends what kind of game aspect prioritized.

Completely disagree, SH1's Otherworld has the most iconic and interesting imagery of the series.

        Anonymous

Hmm i do think it's great. But i feel they could've done more with it (it mostly consists of rotten fences/walls, some blood, hanging body bags there and there, some marks of Samael). I feel they could've done more with occult symbolism and beliefs, devilish pregnancy imagery, etc. Silent Hill 3 achieves that in a way. It still very oppressive though. But i wouldn't it's the most iconic and interesting one.

      >The monsters and otherworld design is the weakest in the series
What? The monsters are Alessa's nightmare becoming incarnate, and they're alluded to at various points. How is that worse than SH3's "fat guy" and "dude on ground with gas mask for some reason"?

        Anonymous

All the monsters in 1 are Alessa's memories of her childhood mixed with the feelings being stuck in a fate worse than death.

I know that. She is kept alive with a ritual so the "god" is able to feed on her suffering (burning wounds from the boiler accident, etc), and eventually being born after the two parts of the soul of Alessa reunite. Her suffering manifests in things that she is afraid of (dogs, insects, her bullies dinosaurs from books, weird nurses/doctors that are under the influence of something > childish interpretation of drugs as a parasite).

Still, the design of monsters as a monkey, pterodactyl, moth, frogs, etc. are not scary. On the other hand i think the bully and doctor/nurses monsters are pretty good. They should've gone more in that direction with monsters representing fear cultists, dahlia, etc. Just a personal opinion.

          Anonymous

Maybe their graphical designs aren't inherently scary, but monster design extends to more than that. Also, the fact that they're somewhat everyday things turned dangerous feeds into the "a nightmare is invading" theme.
But from a gameplay perspective, they're varied. The monkeys are fast, the pterodactyls are evasive and fly, the frogs don't trigger static and ambush the player, the kids grab Harry so he gets stabbed, etc. I don't remember the SH3 enemies doing much of anything besides suddenly-super-fast lunge attacks (the snorkel guy at least knocks her down). Worst of all, those levitating blade things make an unspeakably irritating noise at high volume at all times.

            Anonymous

It's like Team Silent saw how much of a pushover enemies in 1 and 2 were and went in the opposite direction for 3. No enemies have knock back, all of them can make you fall over, they're all incredibly aggressive.

              Anonymous

Aside from indoor enemies like the nurses and grey children which can easily be killed by the hammer, I feel like most SH1 enemies are dangerous, especially in their Otherworld forms. That one gauntlet run to the Lighthouse is probably the most challenging run I've had to do in a Silent Hill game since it's nothing but night Flutters and Wormheads along your path.

                Anonymous

I did my entire first playthrough of 1 with the flashlight on like I was playing 2. The Otherworld town was...an experience. It was a lot like the run to the lighthouse, but the entire time.

            Anonymous

Yeah i agree, the enemies in SH3 are not that memorable (i do really like the otherworld design though and for me it's the best). Perhaps i spoke too fast when i said: "the monsters design is the weakest in SH1". Still not a fan of those, they could've done so much more with it (i'm talking about the visuals, not especially the way they act)

You are slowly discovering what the hell is happening in that town (through weird occult interpretations of Dahlia) and you fight pterodactyls, dogs, insects bosses, dogs. Which for me is kind of eh, always thought there was so much potential for those enemies to be more inspired, cryptic and complex with the usage of childish imagination of impregnation, drug usage, cultist rituals, etc. I mean they've done it with the doctors/nurses, and kids with knifes.

There was even more of an emphasis on animal themed monsters originally, all six of the unused monsters in SH1 seem to resemble some kind of animal. Personally I love the "frog" and "ostrich", the complete lack of a face on either of them is terrifying.

              Anonymous

I understand if you find the SH1 designs to be visually underwhelming. I forgive it because the graphical fidelity is low/blurry/pixelated, leaving some things to the imagination, but that's totally subjective.
              >childish imagination of impregnation, drug usage, cultist rituals
It just wouldn't really work with the game. They could have done those things to scare the player, but it would have required changing the premise (and yes, admittedly SH3 moved more in that direction so that it could do both). I don't think Alessa knew all that much about those things: a 7 year old or whatever isn't really preoccupied with impregnation or drug usage, if they're even really aware of those subjects in any meaningful way. They are, however, very scared of dogs, tall and imposing adults, and the possibility that the shadows outside their room might be the flying dinosaurs from their picture books.
The Otherworld and things going on are more viscerally horrifying in SH3, but they felt less soulful to me. Since they're "just" grotesque monsters for the sheer sake of being grotesque, they didn't really resonate with me or strike me as being inventive and unique concepts from the developers. I understand that they are superficially scarier though in an immediate sense. Some of them, anyway.

It finally comes to the personal taste i guess. I really like the psychological horror aspect of how the mind is able to register unconsciously yours and others deeds (and the environnement/objects you interacted with) and how that mind interprets/represses/desires those in a personal way. So animal monsters are not that appealing to me since the explanation is just dislike/fear/hate. Using child imaginary interpretation of events she lives through could've been exploited in creative ways more that just fear/dislike of certain animals (real or from fairy tales). So i guess in the end i just wanted more enemies/bosses resembling doctors/nurses and bullying kids because it's a more elaborate unconscious interpretation. For example she could have used elements of "Alice in Wonderland" (and others), etc. to figure out what's happening to her. But that's still very coherent that a kid would use animals/scary creatures from fairy tales as representation of fear/negative emotions.

2 ruined the creature design by making everything some Fruedian shit that had to relate to the protag's mental state. SH1 monsters were just things from alessa's imagination so they never had to be anything more or less than "Stabby McFrickface"

Personally I like the idea that SH can pull thoughts from not just your fears, but any strong memory you hold. It gives us interesting stuff like Lisa, who is only Alessa's happy memories of her and leads to the question of just how concious and willing are the monsters that the town creates. Even the an overly sheltered little girl being afraid of insects or dogs is pretty logical.

1 is so comfy and has the best atmosphere.
3 is probably the most solid game.
2 is a great game, just personal preference.

    Hard to beat 2's story.
1 and 3 feel more difficult, making them more oppressive in a sense. 1's Otherworld is amazing, metal and flesh all the way
4's water prison is one of the best horror levels ever. Also quite unique compared to the rest. Ghosts are scary af.
3... I really like it and I really don't. I think I'll need to replay it. A game that is very red and very dark, hard to see what's happening half the time. 2, 1, and 4 I can remember a lot of specific moments, 3 is kind of a blur.

Relative to RE? Way less action and simpler level designs, but way stronger atmosphere. Hope you're starting with the first one and going in chronological order. Try not to fall asleep playing 2, let it do its thing.

Yea, just finished SH1. The otherworld gimmick was really neat. Plus I do like the more open environment of the town.
Now that I finished it im going back through on a next fear run and playing around with the rock drill and going dor the good ending that i missed on my first playthrough

I wanted to make a silent hill thread a few days ago but Ganker keeps eating my threads when I try to make one.
    >get told that my post was successful
    >get redirected to some other random thread
    >my thread nowhere to be seen on the catalog
    I hate it

Heather is now canonically trapped in the DbD otherworld and gets repeatedly killed by serial murderers and monsters.

Is this a good rule of thumb to follow?

Was it made by Team Silent? Try it.
Was it made post Team Silent? Ignore it.

The post team Silent games are not god awful, but they clearly don't fit in with the original four and really are 5/10 games at best.

I think all the original 4 games are good, even if 4 is the weakest, it still has great atmosphere and a good story.

Bit of an oversimplification, very few of the SH games are actually awful but the majority hover close to mediocre. If you want to play games like Origins, Homecoming or Downpour then on their own terms they're playable enough, they're just a fall from grace when compared to 1, 2 and 3 which are bona fide classics.

1 is a classic and its age only adds to its charm.
2 would be pretty good if it wasn't so grossly overhyped by secondaries who never played it, favorite OST though.
3 has a shit story but has the "best" combat and solid puzzles. feels the most fleshed out of any of the games. great looking for a PS2 game as well.
4 is a guilty pleasure, lots of flaws but with some very standout moments. needed more dev time. people that say it doesn't deserve to be called an "original" silent hill game are the worst types of homosexuals in this fanbase from my experience. eileen is peak sexo

Are you guys excited for the new game plus the SH2 remake?

Not really, I don't think no one could ever understand what made the Team Silent games so great but there is no reason to believe anyone involved with the new games does.

I started Higurashi to see if Ryukishi was worthy of writing a Silent Hill game. I finished Himatsubushi a few days ago and been impressed so far, one of my favorite mystery thrillers imo

      >Blooper Team Remake?
      Not really
      >Ascension?
Frick god fricking no. Abrams has the Midas shit touch.
      >Town(send)fall? Possibly. I think having something from the townspeoples POV (in a series where they all died/fricked off/whatever) is a recipe for disaster because modern day people are literal circus freaks and nobody can write for whatever year Silent Hill is supposed to be set in. I expect to see at least one gay rights flag in this thing.
      >The japanese one?
No idea. Never read Umineko or whatever the thing with the bored witch girl is. Which is the only thing interesting about it because the rest looks like Fatal Frame and not Silent Hill.

Also not watching the movie unless Gans has gotten over his girl torture fetish (who am I kidding it's based on a game where some woman constantly dies of course it won't)

regarding F, I think ryukishi07 can do something interesting with SH, he was able to establish pretty well the small town vibes/atmosphere in higurashi, and he has written very compelling characters.

But also consider his horror VN Iwaihime, which was a piece of shit. He can write a good horror (the meat factory scene in Ciconia was very chilling) but only when he truly cares.

dont even bother with that western pile of shit, it contradicts the lore of the first game and doesnt do anything intersting with it. Start with SH1 and stop at 4

Why are you starting with that of all games? Play the first four games in order and then decide if you want to go further. Everything after 4 is outsourced to various different devs.
