Barry is just alright and Lucas/Dawn/Rei/Hikari are boring and hardly even count as rivals.
Gen 8, despite the shitshow that was the overall plot, had genuinely solid characters, even if they weren't executed perfectly. Hau's change in demeanor and goal from beginning to end, Bede's genuine smarminess and antagonism (which Blue didn't have btw, he was a playground tease at worst), and Avery/Klara's little mini arcs of self-improvement are all some of the best the series has to offer not a high bar, honestly, with the big sore spot being Marnie, who's a walking plank of wood that's only the most popular because she's a cute girl.
Play ORAS, it makes your opposite gender rival a character and love interest a little, gives it more battles, a full evolved team, mega evolution and makes Wally way, WAY more competent and gives him an atmosphere that actually conveys his growth

Arven is such a bro. His story is actually well written, but despite his (surprisingly tragic) backstory he's trying his best and is a pretty cheery person all things considered. I had no idea I could feel like that for guys but I would do anything to see him smile again.

Sinnoh group is easily the best imo. Lucas/Dawn/Barry all have good chemistry and good interactions with each other. Barry is objectively the best rival in the series, an actual rival without being a meme like Silver or Blue or a total pushover like everyone that followed and Lucas/Dawn are a much better Brendan/May in the role as the professor assistant because they're actually competent and help you out.
I know someone is gonna go crazy for Kalos placement but Dawn barely exists and Barry is a literal hyperactive moron, the only character in Kanto's group is Green and Galar's only good one is Bede until he's mindbroken by a hag. At least Serena was a nice friendly rival and Shauna was my girlfriend, meeting the fatass and the midget twice in the game didn't ruin them for me
