Admittedly yes, her sheer naivete and paranoia can be rather endearing. But the best ending for her is to do her quest and then not do her ending. She's simply not fit to rule, even by her own judgement.

I always saw it as a "choose your own destiny" type of ending. Ranni's whole character is about independence, and these themes surround the side characters in her story, too. Blaidd was created to be Ranni's shadow but was also wholy beholden to Fingers in the end and his exertion of freedom cost him his sanity. Seluvis binds the will of others and turns them into dolls. You have a side quest involving this where Ranni is completely disgusted by the attempt to enslave her. Iji wears a helmet that wards off the mental influence of the Greater Will and its servants. Ranni's personal rebellion is less about not wanting to supplant Marika and more about taking control of her destiny and tossing aside the Greater Will. Even the name of the "Greater Will" ties into this. It's Nietzschian.

                >I always saw it as a "choose your own destiny" type of ending
I mean it is, yeah, but what Ranni doesn't get is that not everyone has as much agency as her, a magic teleporting demigod. The lands between is beset with very real exestential threats that need to be addressed. Simply being free of a church that was already borderline defunct doesn't help much.

Also, the greater will doesn't and never did care about Ranni. If it did, she wouldn't be able to hang around in her own house for like a thousand years completely unbothered. The last time the greater will decided to act on this planet, it literally buried an entire civilization. Iji's hat is also a joke at his expense.

                Anonymous

I should have clarified. It's not *just* about the Greater Will. It's hardly the only Outer God exuding its influence on the Lands Between. Ranni's ending is essentially the banishing of all Outer Gods, period. And I think it's a little unclear just how much influence the Greater Will still has in the Lands Between. Maybe it doesn't directly give much of a shit anymore, but the Fingers were still able to hit the kill switch on Blaidd to go after Ranni. Ergo, there is some mental frickery still going on with them, and by extension I don't think Iji's helmet is intended as a joke. Usually From puts contradictory information in the item descriptions if a character is wrong about its use. Plus, we have another Mirror Helm in the game that bears the same description. I don't think there's really any doubt that the Greater Will -- or its vassals -- can influence minds. They can rob someone of their agency, and have done so in the past and present.

                >Ranni's ending is essentially the banishing of all Outer Gods, period
She says nothing to this effect, and would be powerless to enforce such a thing. She took the elden ring off world, where it can't be meddled with or worshipped, and men could only speculate about the metaphysics of life and death. Which is fine as an idea, were it not for the fact that humanity really fricking needs that power right now.
The fingers were able to influence Blaidd because they created him. And it's not even clear if they triggered him, or he just had some built in programming that went off.

Also the greater will is not merely some "outer god", but the creator of life on this planet. Nothing in the setting compares except the primeval current and the frenzied flame. Its so far above Ranni's paygrade that any idea of true defiance against it is naive. But that's kind of the point of her character. Being a silly little girl playing at the role of cosmic usurper.

Her thing was that she believed as an empyrean she was doomed to eventually be compelled to take Marika's place (which would mean becoming physical host of the elden ring, though it's not clear if she knew this). But... she was just wrong. The fingers recognized her as a suitable host, but said and did nothing to suggest it wasn't an offer she could refuse. They likewise made no moves against Malenia or Miquella, who were also empyreans who shunned the idea of supplanting Marika. Ranni also seems to think that her plan to destroy her own body somehow failed, as she plots to kill the carian-associated two fingers despite having successfully moved her soul into a different vessel. Her guide in all this is Iji, a guy who hates the golden order probably because, like all trolls, they cut out his fricking chest. But, he's also a paranoid lunatic, who literally wears a tinfoil hat to try to keep the greater will out of his head.

The greater will itself doesn't give much of a frick about anything as long as you don't try to destroy or replace creation.

I'm not "writing" anything. Nothing in the game suggests that the fingers ever threatened her, demanded anything of her, or tried to kidnap or harm her, before or after she killed Godwyn.

                Anonymous

You are, though. Nothing in the game suggests *anything* about Ranni's situation. It is intentionally vague, just like all of From's writing. We don't have concrete details on what the Fingers did or did not do. It's fine to make your own interpretations, but the way you're phrasing things makes it seem as if there's direct evidence in game of what exactly went on with the Empyreans. You were filling in the blanks with your headcanon, which is fine, but at least admit that it's just your interpretation.

The problem is is that you're making calls of intentions and judgements based of off a lack of evidence, i.e. we weren't told that the Fingers were heckling Ranni to usurp Marika, ergo they weren't.
                >but said and did nothing to suggest it wasn't an offer she could refuse
When phrased this way, it comes across as a very charitable towards the Fingers, and it isn't information that we're told in game at all. Period. Maybe they did. Maybe they didn't. We don't know, and that's the point. You can say, "we don't know the details of Ranni and the fingers" but your argument is "because we weren't told the details nothing happened."

                Anonymous

Except we do know plenty of details. Ranni sat around in her own fricking house scheming with open heretics against the golden order, people who blasphemed against the greater will itself, and nothing happened. There is nothing in the game that implies that Ranni's and Iji's reading of the situation even COULD be correct, and plenty of evidence that it isn't.

                Anonymous

I don't really see how this is relevant to our conversation. Again, we still don't have details on what did or didn't happen.

Ranni's entire crew is extremely heretical but they haven't *technically* done any open heresy against the golden order yet. Even if they were actively on the golden order's hit list, as far as everyone is concerned Ranni doesn't even exist. When she shows up, she uses aliases and her form is incorporeal anyways. Iji wears a tin foil hat to keep the evil people away, and Blaidd was already their agent so they probably figured since he hadn't gone berserk nothing had happened.

                >as far as everyone is concerned Ranni doesn't even exist
Then why does she need to kill the fingers exactly, if her plan worked? And if it DIDN'T work... why is she hiding out in her own house? That's the dumbest part about the "Iji took off his hat so the fingers knew where to find him" thing, they were AT Caria manor. Ranni was literally just hanging out at the top of Ranni's Wizard Tower.

Well, that's not common knowledge. And technically speaking, Ranni only killed herself. She enchanted the knives of the assassins, but didn't directly kill Godwyn. Clearly the heresy of stealing the Rune of Death wasn't enough to trigger Blaidd's kill switch programming.
                >Then why does she need to kill the fingers exactly, if her plan worked?
                I don't know. I think it's just bad writing.

Again, I just think it's bad writing. I guess if you were being charitable you could say even if they did go to Caria manor it's not like they would recognize Ranni and she could just pass herself off as Renna as she does in her introduction.

                >Clearly the heresy of stealing the Rune of Death wasn't enough to trigger Blaidd's kill switch programming.
I guess that's kinda my point. Ranni goes on about not wanting to be controlled, but it's pretty clear there were very few limits on what she was actually allowed to do.
                >just bad writing.
I guess. But while I know that my suggestion that Ranni's whole quest is bullshit might seem like post-hoc justification, it's worth noting that it's far from the first time that From has written a story about a character going to great lengths to accomplish some feat or goal that was bullshit or nonsense. Hell, that was basically the point of the final boss of Sekiro. It's kind of bitter and mean spirited writing, but rather unique in that regard.

Ranni is guilty of a lot of heinous shit but I always found it weird how people bring up Blaidd and Iji dying as if she could have done anything about it, or was even aware of what they were doing. Or that she would even consider killing them off.

Iji imprisoned Blaidd of his own volition, likely without even telling Ranni since it happens after she leaves. When Blaidd breaks out (or is freed) from prison, and you find him having gone mad but still maintaining his loyalty to Ranni, it's only after you tell Iji this, that Iji will die, and his dialogue beforehand is fairly suicidal, saying he'll see Blaidd soon. Given that his helmet is off on the ground (not the model, but, hey, typical From laziness) I think you're supposed to interpret that he killed himself knowing that his role was complete. He took off the mirror helm, exposing himself to whoever was sending the assassins after Ranni and Co. and did one final fight with them before joining Blaidd in death. I mean, what was Ranni supposed to do anyways? She's not omniscient, nor was she even "here" when all of this occurred. The most you can say about it is that she didn't stalk her friends hard enough, but that's not really the kind of writing that From is known for.

          She admitted what she did.
          "Blaidd, and Iji both...
Art willing to give too much to me.
          Yet they both understand.
What lieth beyond the dark path...
          That I must betray everything,
and rid the world of what came before.
Ah, should I add thee to the list?"
          >Given that his helmet is off on the ground (not the model, but, hey, typical From laziness)
If the intention was that he killed himself, they would have used a generic troll head. But more importantly, he was sitting at the foot of Caria manor. Nobody needed to read his mind to know that allies of Ranni would probably be there. Finally, there's no evidence that the fingers do or ever have employed the black knives, while we know Ranni did. She was closing loose ends.

            Anonymous

Nothing in that quite is an admission of guilt towards assassinating Iji and Blaidd. Again, Iji doesn't die until you inform him of Blaidd's defense of Ranni and his death. The reason he's so beset with guilt is that Blaidd defended Ranni's Rise and proclaimed his loyalty to her despite the mind control that came under him, and though it cost him his sanity and life, Iji still feels guilt over having questioned his loyalty and his imprisonment of Blaidd. His lament that he will meet with Blaidd soon in the afterlife makes little sense unless Iji was going to intentionally kill himself.

              Anonymous

If Iji's intention was suicide, he wouldn't have bothered killing several of the assassins. He was simply suggesting that he was likely next on the list. Plus, again, he specifically didn't take off his helmet.

                >If Iji's intention was suicide, he wouldn't have bothered killing several of the assassins
Why not? If we presume that my interpretation is correct and that Blaidd was defending Ranni in his final stand at her Rise, and it's because of that that Iji felt so guilty at his demise, then I don't think it's out of question at all for Iji to reveal himself to the assassins going after Ranni for a last bout to kill them off. He's still loyal to Ranni, and it's his final duty to her, in a sense.

The Lands Between suck. Bailing on it for space with a dollwife is the best option.
Frenzied Flame is a meme option and I understand it completely.

The Lands Between are still a better place to live than Dark Souls' world or Yharnam so there's that.

    Was she grafted?

The snow witch set only jas one set of sleeves, so probably not. More likely the four arms is just how the carians make their puppets (see how the marionettes have 4 arms too)

Everything is Ranni this, Rya that.. but what about Melina?! What about her needs?! She has needs, you know?! Cuck Ranni and marry Melina! She's a better cook.

Melina was cheated by From. Everything around her character just screams cut content or they weren't sure what to do with her. Feels bad

She was an incredibly forgettable character, would have been less forgettable if she materialized every time you sat at a grace and you could talk to her normally not only get queen Marika exposition dumps from her. Honestly worst firekeeper in the series, 0 personality.

      Anonymous

She has no body and only talks to you like 4 times if you don't follow a guide to get all her grace conversations, and even then she really doesn't have a presence.
Don't get me wrong, I want to like Meli, but she's just not a complete character.

If Melina had been at your side by each grace, or maybe rode with you on Torrent once in awhile, she would have been way more memorable. The Firekeeper in DS3 has barely any dialogue either but she's overwhelmingly loved simply because you returned to her a lot and she had a unique ending.

i'm playing elden ring and using the gold effegy constantly as I usually do because I like helping people, and some guy keeps summoning me for his fight club, even when I sever finger
Why are people even still having fight clubs? Wasn't the arena supposed to be the containment zone for those people? What's the point of fighting outside?
